So what happens to May’s service time?

From what I’ve read:

Quote:
A typical MLB regular season -- it's worth emphasizing the word "typical" in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic -- spans 187 days, and players must be on the 26-man roster or injured list for at least 172 of those days in order to accrue a full year of service time (or 172 across multiple seasons).

So we lose a whole control year this year? Then what happens next year?

Yes, he will continue to accrue service time. As he should. They could option him down once he is removed from the IL, but he will obviously be on the IL for quite some time, at least until the middle of next season. He will accrue those days until then.

Yeah Urias was the same way and we didn’t lose service time on him.

Controllable Years
- He came up in May 2016, so he didn’t get a full year.

- He pitched 5 games in 2017 then got hurt, same as May
- He was hurt all of 2018, then came back at the end of the year.
- At this point, it seems like he had only accumulated 1+ yrs of service time.

- He was on the roster for all of 2019 n 2020 —> so that’s 2 years of service time

Arbitration years
- 2021 - this is his first year of arbitration
- 2022 n 2023 - he has 2 more yrs of arbitration before he becomes a free agent.

Yeah it still doesn’t help me understand Urias.

We had 5 yrs of team control (from 2016-2020) before he became arbitration eligible for the first time in 2021.

He was injured for 2 of those years (2017 and 2018) so theoretically he was on the injured list. But something happened where he didn’t accrue any time of service during the years he was injured. So I’m still trying to figure out how we got 5 years of control over Urias from 2016-2020.

We know for sure that he was on the active roster in 2019 and 2020, so that’s 2 full years.

We know he came up in May 2016, so that’s another 3/4 years.

Somehow, his 2017 and 2018 didn’t count for much. If they did, he would have been arbitration eligible in 2020 and not 2021.

Maybe because he had yet to accrue a full year of service time when he got injured?

It looks like he had only pitched in 23 games in his career before having the shoulder capsule surgery in June 2017. So maybe he still had rookie status? Otherwise, yeah, he would be much closer to free agency.

May, meanwhile, accrued a full year of MLB service last year, regardless of how many games he appeared in, because that was the agreement for the shortened season, that the season would count as a full season for players as far as service time.

Otherwise, I'm stumped!

Jansen and Nelson have walked more hitters than any of the 5 starters. Buehler has the highest era at 3.16; every other starter is under 3 so far.

Yeah he probably hadn’t accrued a full year yet by the time he was hurt. But nothing that I’ve read has indicated that that matters.

And it says he should have acquired service time while on the injured list. But it seems he didn’t acquire much time in 2017 and 2018.

Yup, I’m curious how May’s service time plays out. If it plays out like Urias, we’d have more team control over May.

Too early in his career to say but he’s definitely a big game pitcher. Gets better as the season progresses and peaks in the playoffs. During the regular season he seems to be 50-75% as good. I don’t have an issue with that, just something I’ve noticed.

Dodgers claim Phil Bickford off waivers, designate Mike Kickham for assignment

The Dodgers, in dire need of pitching depth with eight hurlers currently on the injured list, claimed right-hander Phil Bickford off waivers from the Brewers on Monday.

Bickford has pitched in all of two innings in the majors, one each in the last two seasons with Milwaukee, who designated him for assignment last Wednesday. In his last full minor league season, in 2019, the right-hander repeated High-A Carolina and struck out 41 percent of batters faced, posting a 2.48 ERA in 32⅔ innings over 20 relief appearances.

The Giants originally drafted Bickford with the 18th overall pick in 2015, then traded him at the deadline in 2016 along with catcher Andrew Susac for relief pitcher Will Smith.

Bickford has two option years remaining, including 2021.

Kickham got kicked

Dodgers still heavy favorite to win it all despite rough patch

They are still the favorites but their odds took a slight hit

To open the season, the Dodgers were 3/1 favorites to win their second consecutive championship. They still have much better odds than any other team, but their value is no longer 3/1. Instead, it’s 17/5, or 3.4/1.

Their odds (9/5) to win the National League haven’t changed, but their odds to win the division have. They opened the season at 2/5, meaning you’d win $2 for every $5 you spent. Now, they’re currently 4/15, meaning you’d win $4 for every $15 you spent.

^^^Gonna be a three-headed monster division to determine who wins the NL West this year, Farhan has done a tremendous job so far up north for the Hated Ones.

Yikes. Terrible first inning for Kershaw.

4 runs in already.

No help from Seager and his crappy fielding as missed a potential inning-ending DP ball that would've limited the damage to only 1 run.

Given this is only a 7 inning game, you can probably stick a fork in this one.

Uh oh - Kersh not going out for the 2nd inning. If something happened, I hope they're just taking him out to be safe.

Another stolen base against us.

We are currently ranked last in mlb in giving up steals (1.07 per game).

Philadelphia, who has Realmuto, is no. 1 at 0.17 per game.

In 2020, we gave up 0.58 per game. So we just got worse by double.

At this rate, maybe Cody really is our MVP. The offense went to crap once he went out of the lineup.

What a concept. Someone should tell our idiotic manager that strategy.

He should. But he won't. If he didn't get ousted after his ridiculous managing in the 2018 WS and 2019 NLDS, I feel he never will.

And the fact that we won it all last year, I feel management has given him a reprieve.

Although the only reason we won last year because we were lucky that the manager of the other guys was dumber than Roberts.

I mean, could you imagine if they left Snell in the game? We could easily be staring at 33 years without a title.
