We swept them and everybody in the West in 89. But had zero answers for them in 1990.

That's always been a puzzler because they were the same rosters give or take from one year to the next. However, we did start to show signs of run-down by the very opening of the Playoffs that year. We probably invested too much into winning 63 so's we could have HCA throughout. We would come back from 24 pt deficits in Jan to lose by 1 point, things like that. Also, Pat was pissed at their habit of blowing leads, the bench's habit, that is. So, from 88-90, he would put AC and Byron and even Magic rite the bleep back in there to prove a point or send a message. Chick and Stu would talk about him sticking those guys back in after the bench only blew 14 pts off of a 25 pt lead against the lowly pre-Rob Spurs or Clips (teams of that caliber) and with only a few mins left. And in the 90 season, Scott still pulled up lame on numerous dunks throughout the season from his hamstring injury from the prior year, the one we all know how he got.

Great clip. The most fascinating thing to me is the contrast between yesterday and today. Magic and team just run into the locker room instead of staying on court to celebrate with the fans.

I'll be damned if the Lakers, even well before 1989, weren't able to execute every one of their favorite plays against another fast-paced run-n-gun Western team like PHX like absolute clockwork. There's nothing the Lakers liked to do that wasn't exhibited and unstoppable in games like this. That's incidentally why they lorded over the West for so many years.
