Quote:
PLUSES
Outstanding cutter with natural feel for angles and timing to get open, and is a strong catch-and-finisher around the rim.

Great shooter with a clean release from NBA range. He’s at his best off the catch but he’ll hit an occasional shot off a screen, handoff, or pull-up.

Good playmaker who can make every basic pass and push the ball up the floor on the break. He also displays vision to make more complex plays.

Active on-ball defender who consistently puts effort into getting stops. With his combo of a high IQ and effort, he should fit in the league.

MINUSES
Lacks shake as a primary ball handler. He doesn’t have dynamic moves like stepbacks or side steps, and he’s not a speedy or explosive athlete. He’s more likely a secondary shot-creating presence.

Improved every college season on defense, though he must continue to get stronger and quicker laterally to retain his versatility.

Via The RInger where he was projected to go 38.

He’s a really good fit for this team given how great he is off ball.

NBA draft.net had him projected at 30.

"Ayayi is a tall lead guard with tremendous quickness and intriguing skills … He’s a solid playmaker who developed a consistent outside jumper during his career at Gonzaga … High basketball IQ and excellent cutter to create easy buckets for himself … Improved from 27% to 39% from three-point range from his freshman to junior year showing his dedication to working on his shot and game"

Doubt the Lakers did anything. His draft stock must have fallen a lot since he was projected early 2nd round at worst.

Shocked we were able to pick him up. Love the steal here.

Even without the picks, we got two guys with arguably first round talent on two way contracts. Excited to see them in action in Summer League!

I love this pickup. I hope he sticks. Really crafty without the ball on offense.

Love this pickup! Very surprised he wasn't drafted.

Jalen Suggs gets a lot of credit on that Gonzaga team but Ayayi is pretty damn good reason they were good as well.

I like this because he plays off ball. If you can play off ball you can play with a lot of superstars. Solid pick up for the Lakers. Looks like we didn't need that draft pick after all.

not only can he play off-ball but he's the best cutter in the draft...like it's actually a skill when you see how unique he is at it. and he's good at feeding a player with an advantage.
defensively he might just be good as well..some promising stuff, but I'm not 100% solid just yet..but good chance he's good defensively.

Kid looks like he has a nice feel for the game. High IQ players like Lebron and Gasol could really maximize his talents.

Ayayi & Mac >>>>>>>>> #22, Kostas (leaving anyway), Cacok (couldn't get minutes anyway)

These guys BOTH need to be the 2-ways for 2021-2022. Friggin' STEAL as UDFAs. Could be potential replacements for THT and Caruso, IMO.

Lol THT ain't going anywhere. Caruso I think will stay too.

No, those guys aren't replacements for them. They are potential depth signings to fill the void at the 2 and 3 spot that we desperately need.

I don't think he'll stick.

Too small and unathletic for the 2G position. Too rudimentary a handle for the PG position. Andrew Goudelock-ish.

he's a unique player. off-ball he can make an impact like Caruso - Ayayi is really a special cutter. And he's better on the ball than Caruso, running P&R; not great but better than Caruso (you don't need an above average handle to run P&R) he passes well to the roller..he's got high IQ, gets players with an advantage the ball, which is good with Superstars. and he might be a good shooter.

6'5 is too small? As for handles, he's not a PG and won't be asked to be PG.

I think he's probably a long term project. Lakers probably thought it was worth the risk. He went from high 2nd round draft pick to being undrafted so that tells me NBA teams didn't like what they saw in workouts. The Gonzaga system probably masked his shortcomings.

Teams can also just be flat out wrong too.

We have a great scouting department for a reason.

The draft doesn't do a good job of predicting NBA careers. We've seen 1st round picks out of the league after a couple of years and undrafted players becoming vital pieces of championship teams. It all depends on the work these guys put in after they get drafted.
