The sudden backlash against the the TPP in 2015-2016 was racist xenophobia...from the right and left in America.
I doubt if too many people here know what the TPP is, but I strongly agree with you. The US would be in a much better economic and diplomatic position right now if Trump and Bernie hadn’t put the squeeze on the TPP.
TPP was actually meant to head off Chinese advantages.
You guys are right. And if in the future another effort is made to accomplish the same things TPP wanted to accomplish.
The bill makers have to do a better job marketing it to America's voting populace.
It's probably worth it to have immediate, tangible, short term benefits to Americans. Even if a better bill could've been made (in the long run) if it was built another way.
I get the urge to make the best long term policy for our country. But if the bill doesn't last long term, that doesn't matter.
The funny thing is how much lay voters got wrapped up in some of the most boring minutiae of trade policy like Investor State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) arbitration boards. People would call into the offices of Dem Reps and Senators complaining about ISDS!
It was incredible progressive messaging that helped kill the bill but at its core American resentment of internationalism are hard to counterprogram. How do you convince Americans from across the political spectrum who freak out over the small amount in the annual U.S. budget dedicated to international aid that raising Cambodian workers out of poverty or that lowering barriers for U.S. auto manufacturers to set up factories in Japan can be long-term political economic goods for us and our children? How do you message against an isolationist xenophobic streak so strong that average Dem voters were willing to learn about trade arbitration in order to mask their provincialism? _________________ Under New Management
Cast iron skillets are not worth having to maintain the seasoning.
Blasphemy
I have 2 cast iron skillets. Once they're seasoned they're great. To keep them from rusting, after you clean them take a paper towel and wipe them with cooking oil.
Right on. My cast iron skillets aren't my go to for everyday cooking, but it's a must for any pan seared meat dishes and going from stovetop to the oven.
jodeke, how are these people making proper shakshouka without cast iron? _________________ Under New Management

I just used my cast iron to sear a couple of nice fat tri tips tonight, and it took like 3 minutes to take care of the pan after. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel

I agree.
And the bolded is why the WH and Democrat members of Congress are even now, being very careful on how Iraqi refugee plans are messaged. _________________ "Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better”

Once I got a "chainmail" cast iron scrubber, I've almost completely stopped using my other pans for anything but eggs. It's so much easier than trying to get oil stains off of other types of pans.

The TPP was deeply flawed, and would have given unprecedented power to pharmaceutical companies and large corporations with copyright expansion and the ability to sue nation states which made laws (say, environmental laws) that impacted their revenue.
The overarching idea to contain Chinese influence in the Pacific was correct, but this was a bad trade agreement and basically a giant gift to American businesses who are already destroying the environment and causing sky-high medical costs.
The process of coming up with the agreement was also flawed, unnecessarily secret, and stacked with industry lobbyists. That's why senators such as Warren and Wyden were opposed.

@kikanga:
See. This guy got the messaging down pat. How much does this guy ever care about international trade policy outside of memorizing a few progressive talking points about the TPP in 2016? _________________ Under New Management
^Honestly, having observed DuncanIdaho for a quite few years on this site, probably a lot.
I'm not slamming the guy out of hand, he/she/they seem like a top tier LG poster, but outside of the ugly pharma protectionist stuff in the TPP - also, thank you Big Pharma for helping save us from dying in a pandemic - most of the talking point concerns were overblown five years ago and remain so now. _________________ Under New Management

Maybe this was just my problem but I got tired of wondering if the stuff that would rub off on my finger was rust, dirt, or seasoning, which would lead to deep cleaning and re-seasoning. _________________ http://chickhearn.ytmnd.com/

If you’re wondering if the stuff on your pan is rust, you should probably not have one (I’m also sensing perhaps some OCD?). A properly kept pan won’t rust. And you really just need to scrape (sometimes briefly soak if you’ve crusted something badly and left it), rinse, wipe dry, and lightly oil the pan to keep it in fine shape. I haven’t put a drop of soap on mine since I rehabbed it from an owner who let it rust and corrode. You can fry and slide eggs out of it like a nonstick pan, and not a spot of rust. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. I use mine for braising, reduction, and searing, mostly. I wash lightly, yet adequately, immediately dry with paper towel, and yet the next time I would take it out, there would still be a faint residue that I could sweep up with moderate pressure on the pad of my finger. Maybe OCD? Definitely enough of a bugaboo for me to be ok with switching to enamel. _________________ http://chickhearn.ytmnd.com/
The cast-iron skillet is the powerhouse of all kitchen equipment. Its non-stick surface is free of synthetic chemicals and will eventually require less oil than aluminum or stainless-steel pans. Cast iron has low thermal conductivity (meaning it doesn’t heat as evenly), but it does offer superior heat retention, making it ideal for high-temperature cooking like searing steak or caramelizing veggies. It’s also the only cookware you can buy that will improve with use. However, cast iron can be a serious investment, so we had cookbook author David Joachim test a bunch of skillets to help you select the best one for your kitchen.
. . .
Should You Get New or Vintage Cast Iron?
Romanticizing the past often risks snubbing modern innovation, but the generalization that things were better back in the good ol’ days may be true of the cast-iron skillet. That’s because the cast iron found in your grandmother’s kitchen or antique markets was likely hand-polished to create that coveted smooth surface. Polishing is time-consuming and expensive, so most of today’s manufacturers leave the gritty texture from sand molds. Companies then have to compensate by pre-seasoning their pans to reduce stickiness.
. . .
How to Properly Season and Care For Your Skillet
Cast iron has a reputation for being difficult to clean, but it doesn’t actually have to be a challenge. While each brand may have distinct care instructions, you can follow Joachim’s method of seasoning and tips for maintaining your cast iron.
Warm up your cast iron to about 200 degrees on a stovetop.
Rub a polyunsaturated fat, like 100 percent flaxseed oil, into the iron with a paper towel, leaving a thin sheen of oil.
Place the pan upside down in the oven, heated to 500 degrees, and bake for one hour.
Turn the oven off and let the pan cool completely for at least two hours.
Repeat the process up to six times to achieve the thickest, most durable layer of seasoning.

Too many mediocre movies that could be watched in two hours are getting stretched into 10, 20, 30 bloated hours of mediocre serialized television. Stop it, Hollywood. And stop watching, people. _________________ Under New Management

Well, I clearly missed a pivotal scene in that particular biopic.
Probably right around the time Polly came along. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel

A Fiero won't impress ANY Corvette owner who has 10 coats of Competition Orange and full effin race cams. At least Scottie didn't have a wife with an ass in her coq in the driveway.
