The teams is full of intrigue this season, with clear strengths and some pretty obvious weaknesses. Thought it would be interesting to outline what stats folks will be paying attention to. Here are mine:

1) Lakers Offensive Rating in non-LeBron minutes - LA was pretty bad in those minutes last year. Presumably a strength of this year's team is the ability to facilitate with Russ in those minutes, along with also having a secondary playmaker at the same time.

2) Lakers Defensive Rating starting from January through the end of the season - Vogel has been a tremendous defensive coach throughout his career, the Lakers even being #1 in defensive rating last year despite long absences from our two best defenders. It will be interesting to see how he gets this particular group to defend once they've had time to work out the kinks.

3) Westbrook's Assist to Turnover Ratio - In the last several years, Russ has been at the very top of the league in two categories, Assists and Turnovers. That has come with a high usage and his below average 3pt shooting shooting, requiring him to force the issue at times. This year he needs to be picky as to when he forces the issue, instead taking what the defense gives him which should still be a lot playing opposite LeBron and AD. It's going to take some humility from Russ because this approach is going to cause his counting stats to drop while his efficiency stats should make a major jump.

4) THT and Westbrook's 3 point shot-type distribution (e.g. Catch-and-shoot vs Pull ups) - Neither is great shooting the long ball, but if they can focus on taking high quality shots within the flow of the offense, both should have a much improved %.

What are other folks going to be paying attention to (other than the W/L record )?

Offensive rating: Our defense may take a hit, but if it stays in the top 5 (defensive rating) we're good. The key is that our offensive rating is also really high. Seems like that will totally depend on our 3-point shooting, which is another stat to closely watch.

Pace: Last season we were 16th in this stat. We need to improve on that. Please, no more of LeBron milking the clock and forcing us to take a low % shot with less than 5-10 seconds on the shot clock, especially when we have a decent lead in the 2nd half. That's just bad offense.

Minutes of the Big 3: Ideally we keep LeBron, AD and Westbrook to 32 minutes a piece. Running teams out of the gym and blowing them out will be the best way for us to accomplish this.

Fast-break points: Gotta get back to being 1st or 2nd in this category.

3 points shots made. Shooting 40% on 4 threes a game isnโ€™t much help.

How many games Lebron, AD, RW are injured. Everything else will work itself out.

shooting 20% on 20 3s made is going to be even worse.

Yes, 4 threes made a game is horrible.

1. Are we winning the rebound battle? Particularly offensive rebounds.
2. Are we outscoring other teams in the paint?
3. Are we making a respectable number of three point shots? Above 12 makes a game?
4. Are we keeping the # of turnovers close to the other team?

We had a substantial advantage of points in the paint and lost the game. That statโ€™s relevance is diminishing.

Excuses per game

Is there a stat for that?
