I can’t believe people are angry about the name change when Staples is a big corporation themselves. Staples won’t probably exist much longer. At least the Lakers had the vision to make this change possible. And I’m Christmas Day? They know what they’re doing.

Not much of a decision when someone offers you $700M for it

The stupid decision was the precise name they chose. Yeah, corporations slap their names on arenas. But this exact name is dumb. Drop the .com. Or call it Crypto-Stapes. Less horrible.

Well that's one less reason to buy any newer 2K versions. No way I'm playing with the home arena called that

IIRC, many referred to Staples Center as "The Stapler" when it first opened.

I remember the whining and moaning when the Forum became the Great Western Forum. People were outraged for a week . . . and moved on.

They have no integrity, if they did it just for the money and not what they believe in.

You think they called it "Staples Center" not just for the money, but because the really believed in toner cartridges?

Good point. I guess I'm really focused on the history of name, and ignore the business transaction of the previous name. Also, the fact the new name is so terrible lol I really just can't stand the ".com" part. But calling it terrible will be a thing of the past. We will be used to it, given time.

I'm not surprised. If this partnership with Crypto helps the Lakers so be it. I got over the Lakers no longer playing in the Great Western Forum when they built Staples Center and I'll get over a name change.

Word on the street is they will give the stadium a renovation ala how they Knicks did with MSG. If that's the case, Jeannie had to do it. Isn't Ballmer opening up a new domed arena for the toenail Clippers? Lakers gotta stay ahead of the game.

Jeanie did nothing, the building is owned by AEG. They make the profits off of naming the arena.

They are also doing a massive renovation as part of the deal.

Yup, heard the same thing. I saw the blueprint of the new Clippers arena. It's mindblowing tbh. Jeannie had to okay this venture IMO. Lakers gotta stay up with the changing times.

Why you think Jeanie had anything to do with this? Lakers don’t own the arena, and AEG is no longer a lakers owner, they cashed out their stake for 1.5 B to the dodgers owners. Sure the lakers might get something, but this is very different than Lakers owning the arena and get the full pie.
Only GS owns their arena at the moment, clippers will be next.

Not to mention, Jeanie isn't the only share holder more is she majority share holder Lol they would have to vote.

I must have misread Cryto's tweet:
Quote:
We're extremely proud to announce that Staples Center, Los Angeles' most iconic arena is getting a new name:

https://t.co/vCNztATkNg Arena

As part of this 20 year partnership, we're also excited to welcome the @Lakers & @LAKings as our newest partners! https://t.co/KCfYKySDRt

https://twitter.com/cryptocom/status/1460840630779887616?t=LSuiHEmN1cMlz5-2o6U8eg&s=19

Yeah you did. Don’t quote the tweet from the actual paying party.
This agreement also makes Crypto.com an official cryptocurrency platform partner of the Los Angeles Lakers and the LA Kings.”
See the difference?
Another cue would be no words from lakers, jeanie, mike trudel, etc
They may get something, but certainly not anything significant. Yet literally every media outlet uses lakers as headline.

Jeannie Buss gets nothing out of the naming change. She’s just a tenant in the building.

Looks like a counter to what’s going on with the Inglewood campus.

Keeping up with the Kroenkes and Ballmers.

Yeah they're on par with Coinbase. Probably the two most secure crypto apps you can have.

I hate the new name as a whole, but “The Crypt” could be fun. Some great graphic’s could be created with that name, so I bet it catches on (much to the dislike of Crypto.com). However, The Crypt is an odd name to be associated with America’s Basketball Team which the Lakers clearly are. You’d think something less scary sounding would be better. I guess now we become the most hated team ever (maybe we are already?). Lot’s of black in our futures.

Amazon already has the naming rights to their own arena. The Climate Pledge Arena, aka the rebuilt Key Arena is home to the NHL's Seattle Kraken and former home of the Seattle Supersonics.

Lakers are the anchor tenant. They likely get a piece of everything - including the Clippers gate.

I hate the selling of naming rights for sports arenas, it's just tacky.

I miss The Forum.

At least Madison Square Garden is still Madison Square Garden.

re: major renovation. Any chance they expand the capacity past the listed sellout crowd of 18,997? Hope so.

The other finalist was Arena of the Depend Adult Undergarment or A.D.A.U.

Thought the name wasn’t that bad, but the place seemed to have different vibe with the new exterior colors. Lakers never won another Championship there after the name change in Dec 1988. The first year they moved out of there they picked up Championship #12 at Staples.

Tends to mark the top in markets when crazy stuff like this happens.

I'm old enough to remember 1999 and how some dot coms and tech companies started buying naming rights.

Enron, Worldcom and CMGI come to mind.

I have to say I'm surprised Madison Square Garden is still Madison Square Garden considering...

It should also stay that way.

I see both sides here I mean the Pacers recently changed their name and I forget it most of the time.

I can also see why people are really bothered by the name change because of Kobe and how it was tied to his career and its like this name change is erasing it on some level..
