For those asking what is the hold up with signing Stanley Johnson or confuse: They signed Stanley Johnson on a hardship contract, due to people being in protocol, but by time his contract ended, everyone was out of protocol. So, they couldn't re-sign him through the hardship exemption. The regular rule of the league, to issue a 10 day contract is Jan. 5th. That is why there is reports of the Lakers possibly re-signing Stanley tomorrow.

But why not sign him to a regular contract?

TL;dr: It’s strictly flexibility oriented.

If the Lakers set up a trade where there are more incoming players than outgoing players, they would need the open roster spots to facilitate such a deal. If there aren’t any open roster slots, they would need to make tertiary trades around the margins to gain those spots (ie Rondo) and/or waive players outright (ie McKinnie).

Other than the COVID hardship exception giving teams additional temporary roster spots/10-day contracts, no team can roster above 15 standard NBA contracts at any given time during the regular season.

Also consider that even if you line up 2 consecutive standard (non COVID hardship) 10-day contracts to a player and follow it up with an immediate “rest of season” standard NBA deal so that there are no days in between where the player isn’t rostered, the salary and associated tax hit would be no different than offering said player an outright standard “rest of season” deal, bypassing the successive 2 10-day contract route.

FYI: we did save a trivial amount in salary/tax with Stanley in that his hardship 10-day expired on Jan 3rd and he has yet to sign the 1st of his standard 10-day contracts that became eligible on Jan 5th. So we technically saved on 1 day’s worth of salary/tax hit by not signing him yesterday if he were to sign today (Jan 6th).

So the risk is only if another team like Denver offer Stanley regular contract then he can just sign now to start after our 10 days is up, correct?

^Yep @gov, the trade off to our current flexibility is that we risk another team poaching him with a standard “rest of season” contract.

The market to sign Stanley is non-existent, he isn’t someone that teams are pursuing.

they probably go 2 10 days, and then sign him for the season. he has been better than Ariza on defense and offense.

No-brainer. A guy like Stanley who plays defense and plays hard is just instant chemistry.

They don’t have enough players in COVID protocol to offer Collison a replacement 10-day and no roster spot for a traditional 10-day.

That was Artest-level vicious. The player he's been compared to in the past.

interested to see when AD returns

If we can possibly see

LBJ AD Westbrook Johnson Avery

That could be a very good defensive lineup.

The sad thing with that is it could be one of the worst perimeter shooting lineups in the entire NBA.. You have to pray Bron is on fire from 3 because the defense will happily let all the other 4 guys shoot all game long on top of Bron and Russ facing a wall of defenders anytime they want to take it into the paint.

The defensive potential is there for sure but there's zero balance offensively. You pretty much have to throw in at least Monk for Avery and live with his defense while hoping the other guys can cover for him.

Stanley Johnson is a good signing, as far as defense is concerned... but he is a total liability on offense.

I can't believe how he can spend years in the NBA and not develop offensive skills... wasted opportunities
