If somehow Lakers able to flip Russ for LaVine, would that hard cap us? do we then have the full MLE to offer?

I have concerns with Monk’s game as I prefer defense over offense but I hate roster churn more…plus he was more than a decent shooter. Monk was our 4th best player last year so I would like to keep him for the tpMLE and play him as a 7th or 8th man against our opponents reserves.

Monk was a nice story this year, but he’s an undersized streak shooter who will get picked on in the playoffs (should we find ourselves back there). Using our only non-minimum salary on him seems unwise.

Yes to the first question. The second question is complex. Both V+ and Pincus have written about Lavine scenarios.

Lakers like him but not to a point were they would create extra cap space to retain him, I have heard that the Spurs like him and are gonna have cap space to spend this summer, if they somehow get Deandre Ayton/Malik Monk/ and another difference maker the Spurs would be a interesting team to watch next year

Not sure the better option will be out there for the small exception, though I think your prior point about his shortcomings is accurate. I’m especially worried about having so many small guards. I don’t think you can give major roles to both Nunn and Monk.

Hopefully Nunn can be healthy.
A healthy Nunn at $5M should provide better cost per value over Monk at $8M+.

The FA pickings are indeed slim. I’ve got some favorites, some of which may be pipe. I just think someone on the team has to defend. Cobbling together another team of Monks and Melos and Ellingtons isn’t going to work.

I think we offer him that $6 million MLE we have, and see if he will take it, especially if he signs a 2 year deal, with a player option, so we can re-up him the following year. But, there is a good chance someone will throw him a 3 year $27-33 million dollar bone, and he will clean out from LA in a heartbeat.

That's a waste of only asset we have. We need a find long athletic wing

Who are the athletic wings who can shoot the 3 that will be available at that price?

Most likely is Otto Porter.

Isn’t he injury prone? And why would he leave the warriors?

Jalen Brunson 6-1
Kyle Lowry 6-0
Victor Oladipo 6-4
Derrick White 6-4
Marcus Smart 6-3
Jrue Holiday 6-3
Tyrese Maxey 6-2
Fred VanVleet 6-1
Chris Paul 6-0
Ja Morant 6-3
Steph Curry 6-2
Jordan Poole 6-4
Donovan Mitchell 6-1
Jamal Murray 6-3

Malik Monk 6-3 with incredible hops.

All the good teams have at least one short guard.

Bucks won with Jrue
Raptors won with both VanVleet and Lowry
We won playing Rondo heavy minutes
Warriors won with Steph
Cavs won with Kyrie
Spurs won with Tony Parker
Miami won with Wade
Mavs played with JJ and Kidd was no giant
We won with Fisher
Celtics won with Rondo
Pistons won with Chauncey

The last team that won a title without a short guard was the Jordan Bulls.

I'm not saying we don't need length... we do.

But Malik played great and we'd be insane not to sign him if he agreed.

Warriors paid him a minimum deal. I can see teams paying MMLE up to MLE for him. Still 28, shot 37% from 3 this year in 63 games.

But how many of those guys play defense? A lot of them. Monk would be relentlessly hunted in the playoffs. We would have to give a full MMLE and then how do we fill our other needs such as big wings and center?

It's a reasonable concern but I don't think you are coming up with long wing who is a great shooter at the MMLE.

Porter hasn't been healthy since his Washington days... you want to add that to the AD situation?

They are either going to be like Kennard and Duncan R. or you take a risk on a project like Reddish... some old dude like Rudy Gay or Wes... or maybe someone like JaMychal Green.

I'd rather have Monk than these types of player... but if you can find one better... I'd suppose I'd consider it.

With being more of a scoring threat than all of those guys I prefer to take my chances on him.

I would see if Gary Harris would take the MLE or part. Might not seem likely but gotta ask.
If not I would see if Delon Wright, Danuel House or even Derek Jones Jr would take the vet min just for some defense.

Gary Harris is a nice player but I really think Monk can be 20PPG scorer.

I've rooted for Denver a lot of times when the Lakers were out and Harris has often disappointed me.

But sure I'd sign Monk and then get those minimum type long defensive wings like Stanley and hope you can develop them.

IMO you are not going to have playoff success with small guards who don’t play defense. Right now the successful teams have multiple big wing players and that’s a big concern for the Lakers.
