People used to say that about Lamar Odom. The reality is that Johnson isn't particularly effective at any position. He spent his time guarding 3s and 4s, but didn't do that well at either position.

He's back in his home town of Philadelphia.

His broken jumper is probably why he isn't in the league. 29 years old.

The thing is, I'm really rooting for Stanley. I like him a lot and am happy we will have him next season (and his early bird rights thereafter). I think we need to just be a bit realistic about his growth. He will likely be one of our best overall defenders next year, but that's a product of his own growth and the likelihood that with such few assets, the Lakers can't really improve the team via FA.

It’s all love bro I enjoyed sparring with you. I know you want the best for our team even though you’re a rotten pessimist lol

Whats the ceiling for SJ this season? Do you think he can shoot league avg from 3 point this season?

Johnson has been in the league for 7 years. He is a career 30% three-point shooter, and he shot 31% last year. I see no reason to expect any improvement in his shooting.

What is the statistics test? Post it then.

As AH said above, we had such atrocious defenders on this team that Stanley appeared like an amazing defender. But you cannot say he is in the same tier as truly "elite defenders" like Holiday, Giannis, Smart. Not even close.

Just for the hell of it, I'll give you the metrics. These are defensive only.

DPM +0.1
EPM -0.5
LEBRON -0.66
RAPM -1.13 (ranks 574th in the league)
RAPTOR +0.2

It's important to remember that metrics can be less reliable for guys who don't play a lot of minutes. The RAPM number looks out of line to me. It is also important to remember that even a defender with a rating of 0 or slightly negative is better than, say, Carmelo Anthony.

In addition, relying on the eyeball test for defense can be misleading. I've made this point before, but it bears repeating. A lot of time fans will see someone who is really active on defense and assume that they are playing good defense. The opposite may be true. Sometimes, your job on defense is to stand in a particular spot and do nothing, because that is what the system tells you to do. If you run off and chase the ball, you may be breaking the defense and giving the other team an easy shot. That's a simplistic way of explaining it, but I expect that anyone who thinks about it will see the point. Unless you are a really good Xs and Os type, judging defense while watching a game is not as easy as it sounds.

Yeah, defense can be really hard to judge. Guys who run all around, and get a lot of steals, might in fact be bad defenders.

Monk is small but super athletic.

I'd have more faith we could teach him to play defense than teach Stanley how to shoot.

His wingspan is the same as Chris Paul... obviously terrible for the NBA... but I don't see why he's a lost cause.

Stanley can shoot free throws so who knows, maybe he can be fixed... but as someone else said it's been years so it would be like hoping Schroder learns to shoot threes.

At best SJ is a situational player who can be effective guarding certain players. He seemed to match up well when defending Harden.

Rooting for Stanley Johnson

My hope is that he models his game to players from the previously mentioned Ron Artist to Andre Igoudala to Marcus Smart. If he about 50% as effective, it would be great

Stanley has shown offensive skills on the rare times where he had the opportunities

One thing about Stanley is that he will always be putting in the work in improving his game and putting 150% effort when he is playing. Rare attributes of last year’s team

He's a good defender who can really impact the game on that end. He can definitely be a poor man's Ron Artest at minimum. His shot mechanics are fine. If he can hit the open 3 he will be an asset in the rotation. I'm sure he's working on it right now. I saw a video of him working on his moves with Phil Handy. If he can become an offensive threat look out.

Can he still play defense? He was All-SEC Defensive team in 2012 in the NCAA. What's his defensive stats?

He was forced to retire at age 26 because of injuries. He had terrible problems with his groin and shoulder. Lots of surgeries. He'll never play in the NBA again.

VanGundy really messed Stanley up, however there's still hope for this talented young player to carve out a spot for himself in this league. I don't expect all-start status, but he can defensively make a significant impact and prove to be a workman on the offensive end.

I'm glad he's on the team and hoping he fits in nicely next season!

He messed himself up for not having a jumper. That could change though
