So we got an interesting coach with intentions to build a "cheap" (in the sense of young and not really big names) staff, I guess it's a win-win for the FO, at least til the season starts hehehe

It's possible Rob has given Ham some sort of a total budget to work within and that number isn't high -- or -- maybe Ham is identifying young talented coaches he feel understand today's game/are good fits with certain players.

I mean, look how Ime Udoka built his staff. Seems like that's the model Ham wants got use also.

Or maybe Ham wants coaches who can be on the floor with the players like he said in an interview.

Exactly! You just can’t satisfy some people! They will always find a way to find negativity in a situation.

Yeah that's one way to look at it. A lot like when Luke hired his staff, a lot of friends vs former experienced head coaches. If you look at our title season, we had Kidd, Hollins etc both guys who went into playoff runs as head coaches on playoff level teams. Kerr always hired experienced former HCs on his staff such as Brown/Gentry/Atkinson etc. It would seem wise to add at least one HC who has been around playoff level teams or ran a playoff level team a few years.

So while I don't make a big deal about stuff like this, I mean lets see their body of work over the next one to two years. The Lakers believe in this guy, and seems Russ already likes him, so have to give him a fair shot.

And to an extent, Ime Udoka.

Or maybe he is just getting the people he is comfortable with, he knows that are good, and fit what he is doing.

How many former head coaches does he need to add so that everyone is satisfied? 1? 2?

You mean what Luke Walton did too?

I wasn't criticising when I made that comment. Just wanted to point out a possible explanation of why he chose those people as his assistant coaches.

looks like he has an understanding of what we need and hired coaches with a specific focus.

I'm guessing Ham isn't all that concerned with job security at this point. He has a 4-year deal, and most of the NBA community looks at it as his taking a chance on the Lakers Org rather than the other way around. He's has stated his ethos is wanting a team of coaches who are "roll up your sleeves" hands on. More geared to the locker room than the board room.

I actually think he would have benefited more from adding a Steve Clifford type. But we'll see how this works out.

I wouldn't go that far. It is difficult to tell what attributes those assistant coaches were hired for because we don't know much about them. When Luke Walton chose his assistant coaches, we didn't know why they were hired in the first place too.

The only thing I am certain with is when we underachieve, there won't be a big name assistant coach who can threaten his job.

Imagine a supposed superstar needing to be taught those things.

I would hope AD has that in him already and just needs to somehow get healthy and stay healthy... unicorn territory.
