Summer League Game 3... With neither Huff nor McClung, the Lakers lost a little bit of the mojo they had in previous games.

The game was tied up at halftime, but it fell apart in the third for the Lakers as they fall back by double digits. Turnovers and missed shots caused issues.

Down by double digits, they went on a fourth-quarter run, taking the lead briefly. It was anyone’s game with a minute and half left, but after a series of key misses by their draft pick, Max Christie, they crashed and burned down the stretch. The Kings ran off a 14-2 run to close the game and take the 87-75 win.

Not a lot to pull from this game, but some notes below.

Christie -- -- Not much to this game. He started on the much bigger Keegan Murray and actually defended him reasonably well. He had a foul but other than that, Murray’s scoring was largely on others in this game. Again, he showed that nose for rebounds, pulling down 8. That’s largely his motor and length at work. So he’s been consistently good at challenging shots, defending his man and getting boards. He’s been consistently poor on the other end. Offensively, he’s been a total non-factor in most games. He had one make in this game, which was a strong attack, going hard to his left to muscle in an And-1 layup. He missed a couple jumpers early. He killed a possession by not taking a jumper and allow the D to catch back up on rotations. Down the stretch, he couldn’t score on multiple attempts while the game was in down. He missed a layup after tracking down a loose ball with 1:35 left. It was a big miss with the team down just 1 at the time. He then had a chance to tie it up with a three on the next possession and missed. Then he had a wild drive and a miss to help seal the fate. Poor close to the game. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was -8.

Pippen Jr. -- -- Weak outing with a poor shooting game and little offensive creation. He also added fouls and turnovers. In addition, he gave up a straight line drive with a bad angle. He complained about a foul he didn’t get and the offensive board from his miss went right back to him but his back was turned and the Kings grabbed it. He also had a turnover off an ATO to give up a score the other way. Not what the coach drew up. He also overpassed at the rim instead of finishing what looked like an easy layup. Just a lot of poor stuff going on. On the good side, he had a nice oop pass to Bass for a finish. He had another drive and dish to set him up under the hoop. And he drew an offensive foul on an inbounds. After 12 quarters of hoops so far in summer league it’s been hit or miss, with 6 good ones and 6 poor ones. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-10 shooting (0-3 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 5 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -14.

Swider -- -- Not a great shooting game, but he still finished 1-2 from three (which lowers his percentage a little). That was his only make as he missed a couple of pull-ups, as well, from midrange. For the one make, he had a smaller player right on him, but just buried it in his face anyway. Defensively, he had another track down block to prevent a score. What I really want to see, though, is smaller/faster players try to target him and see if he can stay with them reasonably or is totally out-matched. He hasn’t been tested or hunted. Of all the players we’ve seen in summer league, he has the most NBA ready skill with that shooting. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 1-4 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 foul sin 21 minutes. He was a -10.

Killeya-Jones -- -- With Huff out with the protocol, Sacha got the start. Mix of scoring with the three trailing the break, scoring from the wing on a drive for a layup and mixing in a midrange jumper. To be fair, the jumper banked and looked like that wasn’t planned. But a range of skills. Defensively, he held position in the post to force a miss and he also hit the floor for a loose ball recovery. But the Lakers missed the shotblocking and defensive anchoring that Huff had provided in the next couple games. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -16.

Bass -- -- I know it’s the summer league and guys like to show off their skills. They get a little selfish as a result. But Bass really stands out beyond that. If it’s early in a shotclock and the ball stops, things get real clunky for the team. Obviously, if you had a team with superstars on it, you imagine him giving the ball up more on the next level. But maybe not. He’s got skills. He had an iso to score a layup down the middle of the paint on the move with speed. He sank a runner across his body on an iso from the corner. On the downside, those drives turn into off-balance runners that are heavily contested when he can’t get to the rim and the action is forced. Efficient scoring game at the end of the day with a couple of dunks, including teaming up with Pippen for a lob that was one of the highlights of the game. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-10 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 20 minutes. He was a -4.

Brown -- -- The three ball was looking like money. They even set up a play for him later in the game to bury a key bucket. The pick and pop is an easy offense when you’ve got a good shooting big. He struggled a bit defending with size. He was also beat on a drive by a big and had to take a foul. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-7 shooting (3-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnovers and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +7.

O’Neal -- -- They mentioned that Shaq wanted him to stay in college another year -- some fatherly advice that probably should have been taken. Unless he really finds another gear, he’s got a long haul ahead in the G-League. He’s not bad, but he’s not doing anything that helps him stand out. He had a short stint of 3 minutes in the first half. He scored a layup on a feed in traffic. He missed a pull-up that he should have turned into a swing-swing instead. Again, just a few minutes of action, but if you were ranking impact by all the bigs, he would not be very high yet. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board in 3 minutes. He was a -3.

McCoy -- -- He led the team in scoring with 15 points. The contract guys get all the pub, but Javante has shown a lot of next-level skills in his minutes so far. He was in on several highlight plays in this one. He had a behind-the-back change of direction that he took for a layup. He had another behind-the-back drive at full speed that drew FTs. he showed range, hitting a wing three on a swing pass. He sank another short push shot off a probe. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-11 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards (2 offensive), 1 assist, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -6.

Jones -- -- Aggressive early but never really got on track. He bailed out the offense, sinking a tough corner three, which was probably his hardest attempt of the night. But he struggled to find his rhythm. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-8 shooting (1-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 assists and 1 turnover. He was a +2.

White Jr. -- -- Size issues came up multiple times. He was overpowered for a putback on a missed FT on one play. He was also swatted in the paint. He did block a couple shots himself, including a three on a close out. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-5 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards and 2 blocks in 14 minutes. He was a +2.

Pierre-Louis -- -- His usual pressure D but not much else. He threw a wild pass out of bounds and couldn’t finish a layup on a drive. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a -8.

Cole -- -- Not much to note. He hit Shareef for a layup threading a bounce pass in traffic in the paint. The Stats: He had 2 assists and 1 foul in 8 minutes. He was a -2.

Handy -- -- Without his bigman Huff in the middle, the Lakers struggled with Queta on the glass (4 offensive boards) and altering shots in the paint. Despite that, the team was right there after a fourth quarter comeback. It was apparent this team has no real go-to guy down the stretch.

O’Neal played less than 20 minutes in 3 summer league games. Not a good sign.

Pippin was in ball hog mode with 5 turnover’s. We need a distributor at PG not a scorer.

Swider was forced to move then shoot rather than catch and shoot. Was not nearly as effective shooting off the dribble.

Christie struggled guarding Keegan Murray, a taller player with a more NBA ready body. Murray had 24 with 7 boards most guarded by Christie. Will be looking to see if this trend continues.

^ I think a fair amount of the scoring by Murray was when he was off Christie. I’m surprised we matched those two up to begin with but he wasn’t teeing off on Christie after watching the replay.

I think the jury is still out on Shareef, imo. I haven't seen him play enough, to get a good read on, if he's ready for the G-League, or maybe needs to play overseas. His best game, where he looked decent, was against the Heat, where he played 6 minutes. He was a DNP against the Warriors. And, played just 3 minutes, against the Kings. A total of 9 minutes is not enough to properly gauge where a player stands, imo. And, I was surprised that he didn't get more playing time, against Sacramento, where we getting dominated on the inside, and Huff was getting no play. I'm honestly tired of seeing Bass. I don't thing our Summer League coaches are doing Shareef any favors, so far. Hopefully he gets more chances to play, in Las Vegas.
