KD was as dominant on the perimeter as Shaq was inside.

Curry and Kobe is washed... Specially a young Kobe in 2001.

Let's get real... No one is beating the 2017 Warriors in a 3 point shootout... Warriors pretty much doubles Lakers point production from 3.

No zone defense plus illegal defense. Good luck guarding those 3 guys on the perimeter. Shaq will be so ineffective on the defensive end. Warriors will hunt him and Fox down all day. Shoot over Fisher easily.

Sorry to break it to you bro but nobody wants to play a zone defense vs the Warriors since it leaves you to give up open 3s

and a illegal defense would favor shaq big time since you cant double him down low until he gets the ball. nobody will be doubling any warriors on the perimeter if they dont have the ball so illegal defense doesnt do much for them.

That's when the Warriors make Shaq pays... Who's ever his guarding will be setting screens way above the 3pt line... You think Shaq goes out all the way there to switch or trap? What ever he does advantage to the Warriors.
Switch and guard KD or Curry one on one? Trap and leave his man open when he rolls to the basket? Or sag off and give up an open 3?

Shaq puts up his numbers no question... The question can that Lakers team hold that Warriors team under 100pts? They barely put 100 vs that one man show 76ers team. That with them shooting 48% from 3.

but you have no understanding of what illegal defense was back then

anyways, if zaza and draymond are there setting screens, you trap the Curry and Durant. you got 2 non shooters on the court every time, even if you have Draymond and Iggy out there. Its what the Rockets did in 2018 and should have beat them. Capella was no defensive monster, yet he was able to play the majority of mins and did well. Shaq was just as good as him or better defensively in 2000 and 2001. he did fall off a bit in 2002.

Whats funny is that, Warriors have always played with 2 none shooters on the floor but for some reason they never had issues putting up high scores with high efficiency. Their ball movement and off the ball action is one of the best I have seen. If you trap Curry, they either get an open layup or an open 3. Those 3 guys shoot the ball lights out anywhere on the court. No matter where, how deep, or with a hand on their face. They will exploit hand checking and pump fakes to draw fouls also.

Illegal defense does not benefit Shaq or Lakers perimeter on defense. It only helps Shaq on the offensive end. Warriors probably will be glad to trade 3 for 2 all game. They will let Shaq get his number with mixing up bodies on him and hope it slows him down a bit. I don't expect the Lakers to shoot 48% from 3 with Warriors perimeter defense and length.

I'm confident the 2001 version of shaq can stick to KD and Curry if needed in spurts if they did switch. He wasnt slow of foot but lacked effort. His effort went up by 20 notches when a game mattered though and he was absolutely in his prime in 2001.

But overall i think they'd prefer he stuck with either Draymond or Zaza on those screens or just trapped.

Like i said, rockets were able to pull it off because they ran Capella and 4 perimeter players. Lakers had that luxury with Horry, Fox, Kobe and Fisher who all could hit open 3s. and also were excellent defenders. (Curry would be the weakest defender on the court at all times in any scenario, not shaq)

Also if the Warriors decided to go small with Draymond at center, Shaq would have about 30 rebounds a game. Zaza or some other non shooting center would have always had to be in with Draymond to even make it close but then they lose all their ability in scheme. Curry/Klay/KD and 2 non shooters < Shaq plus 4 shooters. no contest at all

One of the reason Rockets were able to hang with the Warriors was because they were able to out made the Warriors outside by 1. But they were not as efficient as the Warriors reason they end up losing at the end. Shaq with 4 shooters is different with Capella and 4 shooters. That Lakers team were not made that way and play that kind of offense. No way that Lakers team is launching 200+ 3s in a series. Phil's offense was not designed that way.

Those Lakers shooters better shoot at a higher clip. Not at 1-3 attempts per game. If they start shooting more the more shots it takes away from Shaq and Kobe. Lakers will have to out shoot the Warriors and slow that offense down at the same time. Which is hard to do.

If someone tries to argue that the 2001 Lakers would out Fred Astaire, Fred Astaire. It's best to just leave the argument at that point.

The words "The 2001 Lakers would outshoot the 2017 Warriors" should never be uttered by anything other than the Nick Wrights of the world, and they do it for money and clicks knowing it's a horrible take.

They'll say stuff like Shaq would be able to stay with Durant or Steph if switched on the perimeter But if you tell them Klay would be defending Fisher they'll likely act like it doesn't matter.

The collective effort of LeBron freaking James and Kyrie Irving playing Super Nova and Kevin Love playing at a high level as a third option amounted to 1 win against the 2017 Warriors and people think that Derek Fisher will be the difference maker in this matchup

LeBron James averaged
33.6 PPG
12.0 RPG
10.0 APG
1.4 SPG
1.0 BPG
on 56.4% Field Goal
and 38.7% From Three

Kyrie Irving averaged
29.4 PPG
4.0 RPG
4.4 APG
1.0 SPG
on 47.2% Field Goal
and 41.4% From Three

Kevin Love averaged
16.0 PPG
11.2 RPG
1.0 APG
2.2 SPG
1.0 BPG
on 38% field Goal(cause he shot mostly threes)
and 38.7% from Three

JR Smith averaged
11.8 PPG
on 54.1% Field Goal
and 58.1% From Three
As one of his most efficient performances in the Playoffs ever.

They put in all that effort in their series vs the 2017 Warriors.

They won... one game. After only losing one game the entire Playoffs up to that point.

Two ALL TIME GREAT performances + One 3rd Option All-Star Performance + The Role players stepping up big time.

Amounted to one win.

They should let that marinate.

but but but, you forgot defense as expected.

Defense wins championships

The Los Angeles Lakers had the best defensive rating by a team in the 2001 playoffs, with a 97.9 rating

The Cleveland Cavaliers had a defensive rating of 112.1 in the 2017 playoffs which was last.

These hot takes help no one, especially when they're outright lies.

In 2017 Steph Curry averaged

26.8 PPG
8.0 RPG
9.4 APG
2.2 SPG
44% Field Goal
38% From Three
89.7% Free Throw

against Kyrie

Stop with the hot takes and lies. Not to mention Steph just averaged 31 in the Finals vs the Number 1 Defensive Team in the League and Defensive Player of the Year that plays Steph's own position. So yeah, enough with the ESPN hot takes.

Also with LeBron + Kyrie's effort that series and the inclusion of Kevin Love The Cavs still lost 4-1.

Lakers could score anyway possible, plus the rockets didnt score a ton in that series. they hit 127 once and 106 once, the rest below 100. confident they could do better with better superstars and better defensively

plus Capella isnt getting double teamed so Shaq would provide more open 3's when he has midgets trying to double team him in fear. The gravity of shaq would destoy them if they went small.

Could score anyway possible but only manage to put 100.6 ppg vs that 76ers team being anchored by a 34yrs old Mutombo. With a backcourt of Iverson/Snow/Mckie?

Also there's a difference guarding those teams in 2001 who takes about 12 3s a game compare to modern era Warriors team offense who takes about 37 3s per game and makes about 14 per. Lakers were averaging like 6 made 3s per series in 01. That's about a 21-24pts disadvantage already that they have to make up for.

Modern era offense already put guards and wings who can't shoot in a tough position. Imagine a big who can't shoot. No one actually really believes that Shaq can keep up with KD/Curry all the way outside of 3pt line?

Warriors will let Shaq eat... Will try to slow down Kobe. I just don't see that 2001 Lakers able to out shoot or out score the Warriors. Then they have to slow down that Warriors spread offense that no teams in 2001 have ever faced or seen? Yea I dont know about that...

sorry wrong again, Sixers were a top 5 defensive team with the DPOY. not cupcakes like the Cavs defense if you want to compare. And each team in the playoffs who faced the lakers had a better defensive team than the cavs.

Btw did you ever see a Larry Brown team be bad at defense? you should have more knowledge than that if you're into old school teams.

Lets see, lakers had the number 1 defensive team in the playoffs and number 1 offensive team and played better opponents than the Warriors. please continue to underrate that team

But they were not as efficient as the Warriors, reason they end up losing at the end. Shaq with 4 shooters is different with Capella and 4 shooters. That Lakers team were not made that way and plays that kind of offense.

Miller alone were able to put up numbers vs the Lakers in 2000... Now imagine having to deal with 3 of those guys with two of them being a better and more complete offensive players.

Shaq and Kobe will get theirs. But at the end this comes down to Lakers supporting cast, Can they out shoot the Warriors and slow that Warriors offense down.

Lakers could score anyway possible, plus the rockets didnt score a ton in that series. they hit 127 once and 106 once, the rest below 100. confident they could do better with better superstars and better defensively

Yes nice defensive ratings against those 2001 offense that was centered on low post scoring with slowed down pace. When teams don't rely on advance analytics and shoot 3s.

Capella was no defensive monster, yet he was able to play the majority of mins and did well. sure, lets disqualify every past ranking and hand the trophy to the 2021 Kings over every nba champ pre chuck it up 3 era. 2021 kings over the 2001 lakers right?

When the stats dont fit your agenda, you go for a hyperbole claim of advanced stats and 3s in this era would just kill any past historic team when they step on the court.

Nope, don't disqualify every past ranking.

But acknowledge when a legendary team like the 2017 Warriors literally had a style that was a counter to the kind of offense the 2001 Lakers would want to run and one they'd be ill prepared to defend. Be it 2017 rules or 2001 rules.

The Lakers would be trying to pound the ball inside, the Warriors would be making them run all day around the perimeter as well as the fast break and would be taking shots from three. The shot that the 2001 Lakers wanted teams to take was the three. That plays right into the Warriors hands.

That and the Warriors run an updated version of what the Lakers ran, except with more pick and rolls and centered around the three point line.

That and the Warriors had 3 elite scorers, as opposed to the Lakers 2. Not just that but you had KD who put up a legendary performance himself, and Curry that was Curry as he always was. As efficient as Shaq was on the interior, that was how efficient Durant was from the perimeter and on jump shots in 2017. That's a scary prospect.

Point blank, the Lakers don't have anyone defensively that could deal with a switch on Durant nor on Curry. They couldn't stop Allen Iverson whom troubled them in occasional pick and rolls as well as on offense no matter how many defenders they threw at him.

But Iverson was basically a one man show. The Warriors had not just depth, but 3 all time greats that could go off for 30+ on any given night. This matters.

Once more, the combined effort of these performances

LeBron James averaged
33.6 PPG
12.0 RPG
10.0 APG
1.4 SPG
1.0 BPG
on 56.4% Field Goal
and 38.7% From Three

Kyrie Irving averaged
29.4 PPG
4.0 RPG
4.4 APG
1.0 SPG
on 47.2% Field Goal
and 41.4% From Three

Kevin Love averaged
16.0 PPG
11.2 RPG
1.0 APG
2.2 SPG
1.0 BPG
on 38% field Goal(cause he shot mostly threes)
and 38.7% from Three

+ Their Role players stepping up.

Only won one game against this Warriors team.

So yeah. Even in your best case scenario if I just took all those stats and gave them to Shaq and Kobe

If Shaq put up
33.6 PPG
12.0 RPG
10.0 APG
1.4 SPG
1.0 BPG
on 56.4% Field Goal

And Kobe put up
29.4 PPG
4.0 RPG
4.4 APG
1.0 SPG
on 47.2% Field Goal
and 41.4% From Three

and Fisher SOMEHOW put up
16.0 PPG
11.2 RPG
1.0 APG
2.2 SPG
1.0 BPG
on 38.7% from Three (on 6 threes a game)

It still wouldn't be enough. The Warriors faced a team where they had a two-person dynamic and explosive offense they went up against as well as a third option that was an all-star. They beat that team 4-1 in the Finals. The 2001 Lakers, particularly with any of their three point output being undone by Durant by himself, have an extreme uphill battle and a team that is literally a counter to what they want to do.

And if you think that Shaq slows the Warriors in the half court, the Warriors offense is also deadly in the half court with their constant movement and picks and open shots they generate for each other. Again.. it's an updated version of what the Lakers were running with three point shooting implemented and the greatest shooting backcourt of all time, as well as Kevin Durant.

There's being a homer, and then there's just denial. The 2017 Warriors were a direct foil to the 2001 Lakers and no amount of covering your ears and ignoring the all time great performances of their team AND the team they beat 4-1 changes that.

Yup pretty much… Lakers in the series will be going in unfamiliar territory. They will have to change the way they defend and pretty much change the way they play just to keep up. They want to out shoot the Warriors? That means you go away from Shaq. Lakers offense were not built around that.

Then you’re telling the Warriors to play defense against a team who hardly shoot 3s. They will gladly let the Lakers play that slow down pace and let them force feed Shaq inside and Kobe take contested long 2s. That means they don’t have to over extend their defense.

Klay/Dray/Iggy over Fisher/Fox/Horry

Zaza/Livingston/West/Mcgee over Grant/Lue/Shaw

Shaq/Pre prime Kobe KD/Curry are washed…

If Kyrie put up 29ppg, imagine what Kobe would be dropping against these foos

There has been nobody since 2001 Shaq that has been 2001 Shaq dominant in the playoff, NOBODY, not KD, not Curry, not Giannis, not even LeBron, this ain’t no hot cake or hot snake or hot bake or whatever, this is a fact

LeBron was dropping 30+ on these foos FROM the perimeter, Shaq would destroy Zaza or McGee or Looney or Draymond or whoever taller than Iguodala these foos got

Man, stop it with the silliness

Yup. The use of stats is kind of weird too. 2001 Bryant wasn't the established 3pt shooter he was later in his career. I'd even argue Klay is a better defender than Doug Christie since Doug is all arms and no chest bump absorption, so he's prone to getting burned. I wouldn't care if Shaq got 40-20.

It's more of Curry, Klay, KD getting the shots that they want, all the time. LAL doesn't have enough perimeter defenders and you're burning out Kobe's legs tracking any of these dudes. Fisher's POA defense on Curry? Bad. Shaq, constantly in drop coverage, all the time? Laughable against arguably the 3 most elite shooters in their primes.

The 2001 team lost momentum waiting too long, but had fits with Iverson. The 76ers alone, basically didn't even have a 2nd option on offense and still got a W, even with Shaq wrecking shop.

Like, I ain't mad at saying GSW would win. In the end, it's unprovable.

Hell, GSW was an underrated defensive team too. The scores were higher, but the point spread was All NBA stuff.

If the X factors of Fish white hot at the arc, Kobe playing the longest stretch of pure tri in his career, and Shaq at his physical peak, plus Fox/Horry/Shaw intangibles, I don't see those pansies beating the Lakers. That was the best they ever were under Phil and the only squad commensurate to the Bulls years. Besides that, Curry is a little puke who you can virtually guarantee didn't watch most of the Lakers games from March of that year onward and he would've been the wise age of 13 if he even did. I highly doubt he's basing that claim on anything but his own opinion (you know the saying on opinions). Lest he boned up on all those games post-puberty, which is doubtful. Fans and players of his generation have a lot of opinions about how they'd fare against older teams like the 01 Lakers, but you don't see Shaq or you didn't see Kobe feel threatened enough by the 2017 GSW to even bring them up. It's telling that it's the other way around tho.

GS got the shooters, but people forgot how big, physical and agile shaq is back then. By the time fourth quarter your body is not the same with the and shot wont fall down the stretch. Except for Green I don't see anyone that plays the physical style of ball back then. Lakers are full of players that play that dirty style where a foul is not just slap in the wrist but have some intention behind it. Will GS make is a good series yes but I believe the Lakers will prevail in 6 or 7 games

Warriors pace and off ball movement will also take a toll on Shaq and he will have to try to keep up all 4th quarters. And only one really taking a beating from Shaq are the Warriors bigs. They have Zaza and West to throw at Shaq. Who has no problem playing physical and dirty at times... Shaq and Kobe will get their numbers. Plus no one is really questioning Shaq's dominance.

People seems to ignore that in 2001... Kobe was not even Kobe then.

Man either you have not seen the lakers back 2001 or your have forgotten. 36 yr old West or Green or Zaza are midgets compare to prime 28 year old shaq. BTW Kobe is also that dominant back then, as dominant as shaq was in 2001 Kobe is right there only 16 pts less than shaq total payoff score. If you are playing with the 2001 rules Lakers win. 2017 rules with all the acting players do now a days shaq strength gets neutralized since a tiny bump from him would equal a foul or offensive foul.

2001 was Kobe's first real superstar season. That comment alone about Kobe not being Kobe sounds like basketball reasons. That claim could be knocked down with a feather. He was most definitely Kobe then. That was the "turn my game UP" Kobe. If you gotta try to discount Kobe as "NOT Kobe" to argue for GS, then maybe it's closer than you think. Matter of fact, at age 23, Steph wasn't Steph and that's actually bolstered by the stats unlike that comment re: Kobe. Kobe was 22 during the 2001 season.

Let me add this to why the Lakers win this series 6-7. Not knocking the GS team they are fun to watch and plays the right way, but that 2001 team is a beast also and with 2001 rules imo wins.

Debating style is hard between eras, but the Jazz series with GS 2017 should be telling on how the Lakers vs GS will matchup.

4 game sweep on the outside looks bad, but this is the only team GS played that have an inside presence in the middle.

Utah playoff top players is no where near the Lakers 2001 team.

Hayward 39 mins 24.8 pts 4 reb 4 ast
Gobert 35 mins 15.5 pts 13 reb 1.5 blk
Mack 28 mins 12.3 pts 5 reb 4 ast
Joe 26 mins 8.0 pts 4 reb 2 ast
Hood 26 mins 6.3 pts 3 reb 2 ast
Ingles 25 mins 6.3 pts 4 reb 4 ast

Avg in playoff in 2001

Shaq 42 mins 30.4 pts 15 reb 3 ast 2 blk
Kobe 43 mins 29.4 pts 7 reb 6 ast 2 stl 1 blk
Fish 36 mins 13.4 pts 4 reb 3 ast
Fox 36 mins 10.0 pts 5 reb 4 ast
Grant 26 mins 6.0 pts 6 reb 1 blk
Horry 24 mins 4.4 pts 5 reb 2 ast 1 stl 1 blk

Utah slowed down GS pace
1st game lost by 12
2nd game lost by 11
3rd game lost by 11
4th game lost by 26 but only 8 down by half time 3-0 series lead expect Utah to fold

The GS 2017 as good as there offense is it can be slowed down. Have 2 monster player like Kobe or Shaq should give they problems. Green avg <3 fouls per game and Zaza avg 2 fouls and shaq dwarf those players by size and weight. Still think is a good series and expect the Kobe and shaq duo prevailing in 6-7.

Really?

Man, people are really looking at defensive PPG when the bottom line is point differential.

+12 points for an entire season was an outlier. Too many assumptions being made about Kobe continuing his fire play and Fisher staying hot behind the arc.

Meanwhile, Curry, Klay, and KD weren't even that outlier when they won huge over playoff teams.

Quote:
Off Rtg: 115.6 (1st of 30) Def Rtg: 104.0 (2nd of 30) Net Rtg: +11.6 (1st of 30)

That GSW team was like giving LAL a prime Peja and then steamrolling teams.

As dominant as Shaq was back then, Durant shot +8% higher TS and was an equivalent scorer throughout the entire playoffs.

"They could be stopped"

Yeah it basically took a 3rd All Star in their relative prime age with LBJ in GOAT mode and Kyrie matching him point for point in order to do it, and that was before Kevin Durant showed up.

That 2001 team didn't have that 3rd guy.

When I mentioned that the lakers can beat them is due to that run they went on and it probably wouldnt have happened under any other circumstances. Like the 2002 team wasnt as good. But right before the playoffs, they went on a run and you can just see their chemistry at all time high. You put them up in that mindset and time frame against the Warriors who were more talented overall, but sure its likely the lakers can take them down.

Also The Lakers werent lacking talent so we're not talking about some average team that went on a run but they backed it up with 2 top 10 players. I dont think the Warriors ever got to that point chemistry wise during 2017. They had to just show up most of the time and figured they'd win. KD joining a 73 win team will do that. For example, Its likely they lose a few to the Spurs in the WCF if Kawhi didnt get injured in the 1st game. They were down by 20 plus in game 1 until Kawhi was undercut and his ankle was done

Its like the 2004 Lakers who were more talented but didnt have the chemistry or need to dig in that deep to accomplish what the 2001 team did. it was just too easy for them. You could take down the Warriors in that mindset as it showed in 2018 vs the Rockets who had no business being up 3-2 in a series and close to knocking them out until Cp3 had his yearly injury in the playoffs

Oh, LAL was definitely lacking talent.

Add a star HOF wing to the 2001 team, and I'll think it's even with the 2017 team.

It's funny, when that 2001 LAL team was basically trading 30-40 point games between Shaq and Kobe, home and road games.

And the 2017 team had Curry and Durant doing that, at the same time.

The league didn't add teams for 16 years. A bunch of teams got stacked with talent, especially GSW, arguably with 4 HOFers in prime (Yeah I'm counting Draymond here) vs 2 on LAL.

As good as GS stat is it’s does not determine the outcome when you play for real. If you are playing a video game GS will win, but Utah series just showed a big man in the middle not even as dominant as shaq played GS well even if they don’t have any HOF playing in there team. Too bad video game can’t account for intimidation, strength, toughness, roughness, a little dirty play, body ache and pain that comes in a heated playoff game. Yeah GS can shoot the lights out but that Laker team is a tough bunch of players top to bottom.

I think Its really Klay+Curry+KD vs Kobe and Shaq. Draymond vs fox/horry's can be dealt with.

As for talent, yeah Lakers were def lacking talent compared to the Warriors but something to be said of capturing a team that went on a run with lesser talent.

Like the 2011 Mavs lacked talent but as a unit they beat some very good teams. Thats the advantage I think the Lakers would have because for them everything clicked 15 games before the post season (or something like that)

You put Tracy McGrady on that 2001 team and in theory they should be better but might throw off that chemistry because it will be too easy. And that little lack of urgency can bite them in a tough series.

Sort of why the 2000 team with better talent (glen rice) wasnt as dominant.

And we're talking about the specific playoff run for both teams so I think its fair to just take that into context as the main "what if"... if somehow we can bend time and space and keep every aspect of that run for both teams (after all we are counting their 1 loss for both teams as a standard)

and if both met, who would win?

The numbers, playoff team rankings and the opponents they beat in convincing fashion were all more impressive to me vs what the Warriors accomplished in that playoff run.

Like to see Green, West and Zaza against the diesel.

Players that played against shaq said about his presence.

what he did to Diekembe was crazy in the 2001 finals, probably a highlight real out there on youtube on him dunking on him viciously multiple times.

and also him battling David Robinson and Duncan before the finals and doing similar stuff to them whom I consider some of the 2 best ever defensive bigs. 2000 and 2001 shaq was the best version of shaq ever. He was always talented but his discipline on defense and maturity just shined.

Agree, this is where I believe people forgot, since shaq has different versions of himself thru the years, unlike curry/Klay/Durant there version is constant. That year shaq destroyed anyone in his way and it’s a fearful sight for the opponent specially for the people that is assigned to guard him even player helping out is cautious when he makes his move for fear of getting hurt.
