HBO Seeking Stand-Ins For Second Season Of ‘Winning Time’
By Sam Amico -September 6, 2022
Season 2 of HBO’s Winning Time, loosely based on the 1980s Lakers, is seeking stand-ins for some of the actors, with filming about to take place.

It was announced back in April that the show would return for another run after a fairly successful debut.

The series stars John C. Reilly as former Lakers owner Jerry Buss, Quincy Isaiah as Magic Johnson and Hadley Robinson as current owner Jeannie Buss. It has received some criticism around the NBA for its harsh portrayal of former Lakers star and executive Jerry West, played by Jason Clarke.

“It’s been a thrill to bring Winning Time to life with [executive producers] Adam McKay, Max Borenstein, our phenomenal producing team, and this incredible cast,” Francesca Orsi, executive VP of HBO Programming, said in a statement. “This series not only tells the riveting story of the Lakers’ rise, but is also a look back at a transformative era in basketball, celebrity, and the city of Los Angeles. We can’t wait to see how this team will tell the next chapter of this dynasty.”

The series is based on Jeff Pearlman’s excellent book entitled, Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s. So far, the series has focused solely on the 1979-80 season.

Pearlman wrote a follow-up on the Lakers of Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson (Three-Ring Circus), which HBO also optioned. So that could eventually become part of the series, should it last that long, Porter speculated.

“The idea of carrying forward a saga about this dynasty that is the kings of the city, being able to tell that story of the city and that era and moving into another era would be incredible,” Borentstein said on the TV’s Top 5 podcast. “I hope we have opportunity to keep doing it.”

Those wishing to apply for the roles of stand-ins or extras can visit Project Casting.

HBO Sued Over ‘Overpriced, Inferior’ COVID Tests Allegedly Used on ‘Winning Time’ Set

A former HBO health staffer sued the company this week, alleging she was wrongfully fired after raising the alarm about the “overpriced, inferior” COVID-19 tests used on crewmembers of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. Georgia Heffe, a health adviser on set, claimed in her suit that she’d discovered the testing vendor, CineMedic, was billing HBO for lab-based PCR tests, while in actual fact using rapid tests in direct violation of industry protocols. Her complaint, filed Tuesday, states HBO was aware of the deception and did not act. “It’s unknown to Plaintiff, at this point, why producers and HBO favored a vendor who lied to them, ripped them off, fabricated medical records, and put the lives and safety of cast and crew at risk by peddling overpriced, inferior tests,” Heffe’s suit explains. After “repeatedly [blowing] the whistle on CineMedics’ fraud,” Hesse was fired in May 2022, for what she characterized as “patently absurd and pretextual reasons.” CineMedics told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday that Hesse’s claims “are false and defamatory.”

'Winning Time' Hits DVD and Blu-Ray With Multiple Extra Features (Review)

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty was a huge hit for HBO when it premiered earlier this year. The first season of the series took a look at the Los Angeles Lakers during 1979-80 when season Dr. Jerry Buss purchased the team and then drafted Magic Johnson No. 1 overall. Due to the storytelling, non-stop drama and ensemble cast, Winning Time was renewed for a second season in April.

And now, fans can watch the complete first season of Winning Time on DVD and Blu-ray. Getting DVDs and Blu-rays are different today due to the explosion of streaming services. But for those who don't have HBO Max and didn't get a chance to see Winning Time on HBO, this DVD and Blu-ray set could be the way to go, as it includes all 10 episodes of the first season and a handful of short special features.

winning-time-s1-bd-boxart1.jpg
(Photo: HBO and Warner Bros.)
One of the more notable features of the DVD and Blu-ray is The Forum, which is a recap show hosted by former Lakers Star Rick Fox who also helped make Winning Time a successful show. After each episode, Fox looks back at the episode with different guests, including showrunner Max Borenstein, executive producer Adam McKay, Quincy Isaiah, who plays Magic Johnson, and John C. Reilly, who plays Dr. Jerry Buss. Another feature that stands out is Winning Time: The Craft which is a featurette on three different production staff members who made the show possible. If you want to see the training process of Winning Time, basketball tech Idan Ravin gives viewers a quick look at what it took to get the actors in shape for the show in Winning Time: Training Time.

In other features, Reilly and Isaiah give viewers an inside look at the set in Winning Time: Set Tour. There's even a feature of Isiah, DeVaughn Nixon who plays Norm Nixon, and Solomon Hughes who plays Kareem Abdul-Jabar playing a game of horse. And who wins that game of horse? You're going to have to get the DVD and Blu-ray to find out.

HBO is known for having disappointing Blu-ray and DVD sets for its original shows. Winning Time has a little more to offer because of The Forum, but the one thing the set is missing in the set is deleted scenes as it would have been interesting to see which scenes didn't make the final cut. While a fan can go through the special features in one sitting, it would have been nice for HBO to go more in-depth with a few features, specifically the original featurette Winning Time: Changing the Game. Regardless, the DVD and Blu-ray set of Winning Time is something basketball and non-basketball fans can enjoy. Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty: The Complete First Season, will be available on Oct. 4.

In addition to Reilly, the show’s cast includes Quincy Isaiah, Adrien Brody, Jason Clarke, Gaby Hoffmann, Jason Segel, Hadley Robinson, DeVaughn Nixon, Solomon Hughes, Tamera Tomakili, Brett Cullen, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Spencer Garrett, Molly Gordon, Joey Brooks, Delante Desouza, Jimel Atkins, Austin Aaron, McCabe Slye, Thomas Mann, Gillian Jacobs, with Michael Chiklis and Rob Morgan.

I don’t get why they delayed it so long looks like they will cover 3 season in season 2 which means it will end up in 1984.

‘Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty’: Ari Graynor Joins Season 2 Cast Of HBO Series

EXCLUSIVE: Ari Graynor has joined the Season 2 cast of Adam McKay’s Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty in a major recurring role.

Winning Time is based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s. McKay’s Hyperobject Industries is producing.

Co-created by Max Borenstein and Jim Hecht, the fast-break series chronicles the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties — a team that defined its era both on and off the court.

Graynor will play Honey, a fictional character inspired by the former girlfriends and wives of Dr Jerry Buss. Honey is described as having left the fast lane of the Los Angeles party scene to run an art school in the valley. Dr. Buss played by John C. Reilly, in pursuit of a real love connection, reaches out to Honey in hopes to rekindle. A free spirit, she is charming, fierce, outspoken, intuitive, and unpredictable.

In addition to Reilly, the season one ensemble cast included Quincy Isaiah, Jason Clarke, Adrien Brody, Gaby Hoffmann, Tracy Letts, Jason Segel, Julianne Nicholson, Hadley Robinson, DeVaughn Nixon, Solomon Hughes, Tamera Tomakili, Brett Cullen, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Spencer Garrett, Sarah Ramos, Molly Gordon, Joey Brooks, Delante Desouza, Jimel Atkins, Austin Aaron, Jon Young, Max E. Williams with Rob Morgan and Sally Field. As we previously reported, McCabe Slye who guest-starred in Season 1, is joining Season 2 as a series regular.

Borenstein executive produces the series with McKay, who directed the pilot, and Kevin Messick for Hyperobject Industries. Hecht is co-writer of story and executive produces along with Jason Shuman, Scott Stephens and Rodney Barnes, who also serves as writer.

Graynor’s previous credits include Apple TV’s Surface, FX’s Mrs. America, Showtime’s I’m Dying Up Here and the legendary series, The Sopranos. Her film work includes For A Good Time Call, The Front Runner, The Disaster Artist, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist and more. Graynor is repped by UTA, Entertainment 360, and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler, Feldman & Clark.

"I wasn't involved in it" - James Worthy explains why he doesn't plan on watching 'Winning Time'
Story by Owen Crisafulli • Yesterday 4:56 AM

"Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty" drew in quite a few basketball fans when it was initially released back in 2022. Now, after over a year of waiting, the second season is right around the corner.

While the show has been relatively popular among fans, the players involved, particularly on the Los Angeles Lakers, haven't been too receptive to the show. Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar both have expressed their disdain for the show already, and it doesn't sound like James Worthy is going to tune in anytime soon either.

Worthy is not a fan of 'Winning Time'
Worthy was drafted by the Lakers with the first overall pick of the 1982 NBA Draft and spent his entire 12-year career in Los Angeles. James played a huge role in each of the three titles he won during his time in the NBA, and while he wasn't in the first season of 'Winning Time,' he is expected to be featured in upcoming seasons of the show.

Despite that, Worthy stated that he hadn't watched any of 'Winning Time' to this point, explaining that the lack of involvement from players involved in that era of basketball convinced him not to pay any attention.

"You know, I haven't watched it because I wasn't involved in it, and I was hoping that they would come to us and get some really good interviews and some really good one-on-ones, sit-downs because we were willing to share a lot of stuff. That decade was iconic, and I just wish we could have been involved…I just think it could have been done really, really good, and I was just disappointed that it wasn't," Worthy said, per TMZ Sports.

Worthy recommends 'The Legacy'
'Winning Time' is a unique show which doesn't come across as your typical sports series; it is designed like a popular streaming show rather than a documentary. It turns out that's part of why Worthy and his teammates aren't interested in seeing what the show has to offer.

According to Worthy, he and the rest of the Lakers were more invested in the Hulu series' Legacy: The True Story of the LA Lakers,' which he believes fans should watch if they want a more accurate representation of what actually happened during this era.

"We never talked about 'Winning Time' because we were never involved in it. We talked a lot about 'The Legacy,' and so if you really want to know the truth, go watch 'The Legacy' on Hulu and get the real deal. If you like satire and stuff, then go watch 'Winning Time," Worthy added.

Given 'Winning Time's' comedic take on the Lakers during the 80s, it's not surprising to see that many of the players involved haven't been too happy with their portrayal. And while both of these shows have different styles of conveying their message, it's clear that they are both highly entertaining to basketball fans.

It will be interesting to see what the second season of 'Winning Time' has to offer, but Worthy seems more focused on Hulu's 'Legacy' series instead.

Honestly, I cannot wait for Season 2. This was one of the best new shows on TV last year. Endlessly entertaining and inventive in it's cinematic approach.

I know some people were really in their feelings about how certain Laker legends were portrayed.

I hope the show continues to have success so they can get to the Shaq/Kobe era.

IMO - Season 2 is off to a disappointing start.

JW remains a caricature and Jamal Wilkes is still criminally under-developed. Instead of focusing on player and coaching dynamics that could easily drive a more compelling storyline, we learn Magic likes to have sex.

Wasted opportunity.

I think they spent a lot more time on the alpha dynamics between Magic/Kareem and the rest of the team buying into a new system than they did on Magic's love of poon. But this is meant to be an arcade game and not a simulation anyway.

I agree the writers doing a good job of setting up the "peaceful transfer of power", but they're also pretending the teams second leading scorer didn't exist. Or the new FA PF who immediately shattered his leg, only later to thump back at the Celt's fugly thuggery and them become GM. I think only Cooper and Chones were the only other players to have any lines in S2 E1. Its just weird. In the first season, they ignored the guy they moved for Spencer Haywood, in part to make room for Jamaal, who then went on to average 28 a game the next year. And I don't think you tell James Worthy's story properly without developing Wilkes', whom he ultimately replaced. I hope they give McAdoo some love, who the FO signed in its perceptual search for a viable backup for Kareem, passing on a loser free agent named Bill Laimbeer. I do think Norm's exit and Bryon's subsequent hazing is already set up.

I get this is more historical fiction than docudrama, but I think even that would would more entertaining by telling the stories of more than just 2 players.

Winning Time Sneak Peek: Magic Gets Grilled About His Injury (Exclusive)

Magic might be taking a dip in an ice bath, but he’s definitely feeling the heat this week on Winning Time.

TVLine has an exclusive sneak peek at this Sunday’s episode (HBO, 9/8c), and in it, Magic is in the ice bath when assistant coach Pat Riley comes in to ask him how he’s recovering from his knee injury. Magic insists he’s at 90 percent, but Riley is more pessimistic, putting it at more like 50 percent. If the head coach finds out he’s still hobbled, Magic will have to sit out games, but “you need that run to get in shape for playoffs,” Riley reminds him. And Riley knows, because he used to play in the NBA, too.

Magic admits that “something ain’t right” with him since he came back from injury; he doesn’t feel like himself. Riley thinks he’s too caught up in his own head: “You can’t be out there thinking it’s gonna happen again.” But how does he stop thinking like that, Magic asks? “That’s simple,” Riley replies. “Stop thinking.”

Elsewhere in this week’s episode, titled “The Magic Is Back”: “Magic’s return threatens the Lakers’ new ‘system,’ and Pat Riley and Jerry West push for a risky trade. While Coach Westhead fights for his team, Jeanie clashes with her brothers, and a melancholy Buss attempts to court a figure from his past.”

Press PLAY above for a sneak peek at Sunday’s episode, and then dribble down to the comments and tell us: How are you liking Season 2 so far?

In order to enjoy the show you kind of need to separate it form the actual events and people that it's portraying, and just think of it as a fictional comedy centered around basketball... If you can do that it's pretty entertaining.

Too much focus on Magic sex drive.

Also find the Jeanie dynamic funny.
