I think defensively his job would be a lot easier today. He had a difficult time guarding players like Rasheed Wallace, Karl Malone, Tim Duncan, Chris Webber, etc. The league today doesn’t have all the dominant big men it used to have.

Who didn't? 3 HOF and a 4X All-Star?

The Western Conference was LOADED back then - especially at PF.

Nobody could stop those guys (obviously), but I did think some other players we had, like Horace Grant and Karl Malone were more effective against those guys. The fact that other playoff teams had all-star and HOF big men was a major problem for our team because the players we had were overmatched against them. There’s a reason why the team even picked up Dennis Rodman despite his issues. That move was out of desperation.

I was really worried about Charles Barkley in the 1999 playoffs too and he dominated but fortunately the other Rockets stars didn’t.

Horry was a bit of a disappointment until the finals against Orlando where he was put at four against Orlando. Ho Grant was their defensive backline help ace and Horry made him come out and defend the perimeter (the old illegal defense rules). This established him as something other than the elite athlete wing he had been in college, and set the tone for his 3 and d role.

He’d be great as a role player today because he could guard big to small so he’d be switchable all over. A perfect front court fit with Bron and AD actually, where all three guys could switch with each other and on to guards.

There's a trend of today's players throwing in the towel, so Horry would fit right in.
