Tsunami warning follows major quake in Mexico

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake has struck just off the southwestern coast off Mexico, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami alert warning of potentially hazardous waves striking Mexico immediately.

There are no known casualties or damage yet recorded in Mexico City, according to the city’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum.

The USGS provided more detail, saying that the quake struck about 37 kilometers south east of the city of Aquila, in Michoacan state. The quake depth was about 15.1 kilometers, the USGS also reported.

The news comes on the fifth anniversary of the 2017 earthquake that killed 216 people in Mexico City.

The epicenter of that 7.1-magnitude earthquake was 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) east-northeast of San Juan Raboso and 34.1 miles (55 km) south-southwest of the city of Puebla, in Puebla state, the USGS reported at the time.

Wowo, something about Sep 19 and major earthquakes in Mexico:

Quote:
The 1985 Mexico City earthquake struck in the early morning of 19 September with a moment magnitude of 8.0 and a maximal Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent).

The event caused serious damage to the Greater Mexico City area and the deaths of at least 5,000 people.

The 2017 Puebla earthquake struck on 19 September 2017 with an estimated magnitude of Mw7.1 and strong shaking for about 20 seconds.

Its epicenter was about 55 km (34 mi) south of the city of Puebla, Mexico.

The earthquake caused damage in the Mexican states of Puebla and Morelos and in the Greater Mexico City area, including the collapse of more than 40 buildings.

370 people were killed by the earthquake and related building collapses, including 228 in Mexico City, and more than 6,000 were injured.

MEXICO CITY, Sept 19 (Reuters) - A powerful earthquake struck western Mexico on Monday on the anniversary of two devastating temblors, shaking buildings, knocking out power and sending residents of Mexico City scrambling on to the streets for safety.

Shortly after 1 p.m. (1800 GMT), the magnitude 7.6 quake quake hit near the coast on the border region of the states of Michoacan and Colima at a depth of around 15 km (9 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said there were no immediate reports of damage in the capital after the tremors, which rumbled through Mexico on the same day as major quakes battered the country in 1985 and 2017.

"It's this date, there's something about the 19th," said Ernesto Lanzetta, a business owner in the Cuauhtemoc borough of the city. "The 19th is a day to be feared."

Power was knocked out in parts of the central Roma area of the capital, hundreds of kilometers (miles) northeast of the epicenter. Local residents cradling pets stood on the street, while tourists visiting a local market with a local guide were visibly confused and upset.

Traffic lights stopped working, and people clutched their phones, sending text messages or waiting for calls to get through.

Thousands of people were killed in the Sept. 19, 1985 earthquake and more than 350 died in the Sept. 19, 2017 quake.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for parts of Mexico's coast, saying waves reaching 1 to 3 meters (3 to 9 feet) above the tide level were possible.

The quake depth was about 15.1 kilometers, the USGS also reported. I converted 15.1 kilometers to feet it's 49,540.68ft. That's pretty deep. What effect will depth have on destruction and tsunamis?

So far, no destruction and the tsunami warnings are only for 9 ft waves.
