I dislike him intensely as a person, but Tom cruise is an elite actor. Absolutely, unequivocally brilliant. And that’s beyond the idea that the camera loves him. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. He was excellent in Eyes Wide Shut, too. He was what largely held that movie up, being the most misunderstood and one of the least appreciated Kubrick films. It has gained respect over time, tho. But watching Tom and Nicole, it felt like you were getting glimpses into their actual failing marriage at the time. Props to both of them for being willing to do that. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

I have Prey neck and neck with Predator 2. Some of the camera shots in Prey gave me goose bumps. Predator 2 does get bonus points because I love me some Danny Glover and Bill "Why don't you put HER in charge?" Paxton. |
Prey suffers from the lack of a King Willie. "You can't see the eyes of the dee-mon.....until him come callin'..." RE: Pax, I've internet-corrected as many as 3 dudes who claimed his trusty golf ball was something else. One of them thought it was a ping pong ball. Imagine Pax in his death face-off throwing a ping pong ball at advancing Predator and the ball whizzing off to the L well before it hits him. It's even more ridiculous a gag than the actual golf ball is. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

Whenever Risky Biz is on telly, you can clearly see how he had talent from the get. I remember C. Thomas Howell saying that Tom was reading the script for RB during Outsiders shooting. Cruise obviously must've known he had to nail the Joel role to get his career right. But to even get a lead role like that at his age was somethin. He impressed the right people, evidently, because the 80s were loaded w/ young talent. There were so many that a kid like Eric Stoltz merely got put into Fast Times because he went along to a casting shoot w/ his friend. And fast forward 3 years, he's got the lead in Mask (1985). And he did Marty McFly for a third of that flick. And speaking of Predator, Stoltz had only 1 degree of separation of Kevin Peter Hall, who was in 1984's The Wild Life w/ Eric, Chris Penn, Lea Thompson, Wyatt from Weird Science, etc. Lot of character actors in that, but it's one of the only movies that has never been transferred to DVD for some reason. Eddie Van Halen did the music score in that, so maybe it was music rights related, but that movie and Firstborn from 1984 (the one where RoboCop invades a fam and turns Terri Garr into a cokehead) are the only two flicks that never went to DVD.
To me, Risky Biz was a major influence on the pensive, narrated style of American Beauty years later. There's a pensive back score and the main characters made transformations into "What the F..." kinda guys. Both tortured by their responsibilities and anxieties. I've never read anything proving my AB theory, but it's one of those things I gotz zero doubts on. Tom's undies dance to "Old Time Rock N Roll" is an iconic 80s scene. The movie is interesting because, like American Beauty, there are teen characters in it, but the plot is decidedly adult for a flick that gets lumped into an 80s teen flick bin. Rebecca DeMornay was every guy's fantasy. She cometh from Wally George. Funny how mediocre DNA can still mix in spectacular fashion as in Rebecca's case. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

Only scene that gets increasingly bizarre and/or tense as this was the Jessie's Girl scene in Boogie Nights. Love scenes like this. RIP to Dean Stockwell. One of the great character actors. This was easily his most memorable movie moment.

Watched "Tucker" (1988) for the 2nd time on free YT. I hadn't seen it in years. Jeff Bridges. Kind of meh as a movie, but Tuck was an interesting character. Big 3 auto companies and a Repub Senator bleeped him over like they did Howard Hughes. Dean Stockwell played Howard in a small scene. Ordinary fare for Jeff, probably didn't challenge him one iota, but perhaps the zeroes were to his liking. Car is the 1948 Tucker Torpedo. They made 50. The most original ones w/ original engines go for 2.5-3 mill now. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

watched Honk for Jesus last night... awful. Apparently it was adapted from a short film and it feels just like that... a film with a message so basic it should have just been a short film or sketch but stretched to full length by repeating the same stuff over and over and over again. _________________ (bleep) Kawhi |

Confess, Fletch: better looking than most straight to streaming comedies, but only by so much. The still drab visuals hold back a truly winning dramedy wherein Jon Hamm finds a franchise comedic persona he can perfectly embody and which perfectly suits him. It's just so streamer *blah* visually from a director who beforehand has always had a real style that it can't help but be disappointed with the movie as an aesthetic comedy.
Nonetheless one of the funniest movies of the year based on performance and content even if it is at odds with its visual stylization at times. _________________ Under New Management

Rewatched Avatar in 3D and it remains as dumb and as beautiful as ever. Cameron made the best looking CGI film in 2009 and no one has topped it since.
But the real treat was the mid-credits sneak preview scene from Avatar 2 that actually looks like it will be the movie to finally top the original in digital visual style and beauty. I wish Cameron would direct some non-Na'vi movies, but if he wants to outclass the mediocre Marvel machine with his own cinematic universe of CGI blockbusters, more power to him. _________________ Under New Management |

Bullet Train is a real ride. A train full of professional killers. Sandra Bullock's part is small. On the few occasions she appeared on screen she's almost unrecognizable. 1 to 10 I give it 7 _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

That's really generous. I found it obnoxious by mid-film. Poor man's Guy Ritchie flick with an overly-complicated plot and an insanely bad last 20-30 (something) minutes. |

IA I'm a Brad Pitt fan. The cast is really no name. I remember Michael Shannon from Bad Boys II. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Casey Siemaszko's sister Nina is in it, she was cute. Casey the shorter black haired lad of Young Guns, 3 O'Clock High, Of Mice And Men, Stand By Me, and Back To The Future 1 (character "3-D") fame. You can see the resemblance between the two, round faces. Polish descent.

Forgot Dean Stockwell was in it at all. Played Howard Hughes for about 45 seconds. Dean had the natural oddness to play Howard. I like The Aviator, but Leo doesn't strike me as a Howard type save for the liking younger women part. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

Smile (2022): abandons it's premise a little too quickly, but a legitimately fun, stylish sendup of contemporary Ari Aster style trauma porn horror. Director Parker Finn purposefully repurposes to great effoect the rotating drone landscape shot from Midsommar as both eerie and humorous visual - "turn that frown upside down" literalized. And because the "monster" and premise are so durable, I hope this turns into a successful horror franchise that gets cheapo sequels and reboots for the next 2-3 decades. Special shout-out to character actor Perry Strong who only has two lines as a cop and nails them both perfectly comedically.
Nope is on a plane by itself when it comes to 2022 horror, but Barbarian , Pearl, and Smile are the next best horror flicks I've seen this year and all are in theaters right now for spooky season. _________________ Under New Management

Both elite performances, although Cruise feels like the easier role technically while he's still brave enough to play the cuckold on screen at the height of his fame.
Kidman was overburdened with prosthetics in Destroyer (2018) but it was nice to see her trying to stretch her acting muscles in a lead performance again. I miss the Nicole of Dead Calm, To Die For, Eyes Wide Shut, and Birth. _________________ Under New Management |

For Buster Keaton fans, MUBI's film of the day is The Great Buster: A Celebration. As the title suggests, it is very much a love letter to Buster Keaton, so anyone looking for a critical analysis of his works may be disappointed. But a nice watch for those looking for something light and celebratory |

I can picture you at one of those mask/breasts cuarees, Baron. Even your screen nym befits them. And if you are, do you think you can get me in? I don't wanna heed the warning about crashing those from Tom's character. I think Nicole's "Iiiif yooou meeen ooonly KNEEW..." monologue was one of her best, but her whole sarcastic demeanor after the party towards Tom entertaining the girls was naturalistic to the extreme. I'm sure Tomcat had his hands full with her in real life and I'm sure she could give it back as well as she could take it. Tom felt a twinge of reality w/ that story of her wanting to jump a rando at the risk of her marriage/child, etc. I think he was THAT ecstatic with the young brunette girl because he found a younger girl who he thought was dupable visavis Scientology. I don't see Nicole as a person who would fall into that abyss inextricably. Agree w/ you that she seems smarter than that. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL
