Wall Street Journal

(The Mississippi River Is Drying Up, Disrupting a Vital Supply Lane | WSJ)

Quote:
The Mississippi River, a vital transportation highway, is drying up. And industries don’t have many alternatives. WSJ’s Cameron McWhirter explains how this happened and what it means for U.S. agriculture, oil and tourism.

They already have to continuously dredge areas of the Miss'sip when it's full in order to accommodate large ships. It won't have to go down to dregs before that approach fails to hold water.

Good! This will allow small boat owners to flourish, helping spread the wealth around, while fighting corporate greed...

It's all about the Benjamins. 1 big boat may be able to carry what 10 small boats can for less money. Which is more economical, dredging, which costs, or going small?

I was disputing the claim that it would allow small boat owners to flourish. A vital economic corridor like the Mississippi River shutting down would affect everyone and raise transportation costs for everyone.

IA. My point is cost. Which is more economical, large ships or small boats?

A big boat is always more economical. That wasn't the point I was arguing. The respondent was making the claim it would benefit small boat owners and I dispute that because some items cannot be carried on those tiny boats and the repercussions will end up affecting everyone.

We'e in agreement. It boils down to the Benjamins.

Rail is still a good way to move stuff, especially with engines powered by natural gas. A lot of the dredging is done to the south end of the river that silts up. One person claims to have video proving that the water in the river is flowing into the New Madrid fault. I don’t believe that. The Colorado is just as bad, it used to terminate at the Gulf but now stops hundreds of miles from it. I saw a special on the news and the majority of water pulled out by California goes to farming in Imperial County.

The Earth will be fine, it has been for billions of years. Consider that the area where the Mississippi begins has been under a sea and also under icebergs. Ironically, the southern extent of the icebergs was near Cairo, IL, which is also the northern extent of the New Madrid fault.

Jod doesn’t know that Superman is fiction.

Agree, at some time there will be a mass extinction.
