Yes, all homeless people should freeze and suffer because a small number of them have committed violent crime. /s

Unfortunately, the only way we can solve homelessness is if we give the government powers to force them against their will to get help. The homeless still have legal rights according to the law so that isn't viable.

and even then it would take an INSANE amount of resources and infrastructure to give these people the help they need. Our mental health facilities are already running at 110% capacity with overworked staff. You will need to exponentially increase these facilities to help those that need it.

And on top of that, if there's no fear of becoming homeless, more and more people will just choose to get support/assistance from the government. Or they'll choose to stay in the system. Sort of like food stamps.

You really need the fear of becoming homeless to keep alot of people from becoming homeless. Taking that fear away isn't good either.

It's a never ending cycle.

Agreed. Our focus of money spending towards homelessness, imo, needs to be on mental heatlh as well as drug rehab type facilities, but that's only of value if we can force the homeless people to actually get the help. otherwise it's wasted money.

I definitely do NOT think spending more money on affordable housing is the solution when from what I often read, the homeless choose against taking the housing options available because they prefer being in their tent / RV / encampment for a myriad of reasons. But I see too much legislation focused around this unfortunately .

Recently there was a story about a homeless encampment that had a 10-person tent and a fully functional laundry machine that they had tapped in to somebody else's power supply. Whoever hooked up that washer to power can get a job on an electrician crew today.

Reasons: the housing facilities prohibit shooting up/snorting/smoking/drinking

The world is a hard place to navigate when a person suffers from a dual-diagnosis/co-occurring condition (mental illness and drug addiction).

Violence is hardly ever the answer, but sometimes a person's internal struggles cause damage to that person . . . and those in proximity.

I am a bi-polar drug addict, so I am acutely aware of the difficulty in achieving anything resembling a "normal" life.

It's better not to condemn the homeless.

Yeah, the homeless should not be looked at as a monolithic group, but most do.

Probably more relevant is the stringent times people can enter and leave. Quite a hindrance to people who can’t get 9-5 jobs. When you are at the bottom a lot of times you have to work less desirable shifts (nights, graveyard) or you have to work multiple part time jobs.

The economic shock/working poor clients who want the housing don't tend to treat the house policies as a dealbreaker. They make it work, and they abide until they can gather themselves and move on. The ones who insist on living in the wholesale district tentropolis vehemently and invariably refuse any kind of regulation of their using (and trading) habits, and they use every drug except the ones that treat their psych disorders. It's a crap sandwich for everyone.

One thing that would help, at least on a philosophical level, with our homeless problem is changing the way we think about homeless and poor people in general.

Our society looks down on poor people with contempt. People use the word "bum" as a synonym for homeless, they think all people on govt benefits are lazy deadbeat drug addicts, that all people who like paycheck to paycheck are live that only because they are irresponsible with money, etc.

There's absolutely no excuse for homeless people being violent or harassing people. But they're still human beings who deserve a real shot at redemption, and there are plenty of stories out there of homeless people who turned things around because someone actually gave an F about them and gave them the resources they needed.

Other Western democracies have more compassion for poor people. Not the United States of us. Instead, we demonize poor people while worshipping rich, vapid people like the Kardashians and Kanye West.

They make it work by sleeping in their car or relying on friends and family for support when necessary.
Options many tentropolis people don't have. In and out time at housing facilities is a major problem. https://youtu.be/StJmEX1rcjI
https://youtu.be/liptMbjF3EE?t=871

And here in L.A. it's dwarfed by the even bigger problem of a lack of beds.
CNN

Of course some don't stay at shelters because of their addictions. I just don't want you to think that's the only reason. There are sober homeless that shelters don't help.

And don't get me started on the systemic issues with how our country treats veterans and ex-convicts. Whether they use drugs or not.

Speaking of Herschel's werewolves, this dude came rampaging down the street like one and did a number on a gas station (hrm, Joe Biden did this!...)

This is the kind of lottery you don't want to win at the gas station. To his credit, he threw a bag of ICE at the guy at the pump, so he STILL!!!1 managed to be more humane than 999.
