Wow.

F*ck that.

F*ck Garland, f*ck the DOJ, f*ck everybody.

I'm sick of this (bleep). Trump will get away with it again.

NBC: Garland named John L. Smith, a former federal prosecutor with experience at the Hague, as special counsel. Smith will focus on Trump’s handling of classified documents and Jan. 6.

Quote:
Garland named John L. Smith, known as Jack Smith, a prosecutor at The Hague and a former federal prosecutor, to begin serving as special counsel immediately. Smith was previously the chief of the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section, where he oversaw public corruption and elections-related investigations.

Smith is assigned with investigating whether anyone violated the law in connection with efforts to “interfere with the lawful transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election or the certification of the Electoral College vote held on or about January 6, 2021, as well as any matters that arose or might arise directly from this investigation.” The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia will continue investigating those individuals who stormed the U.S. Capitol.

Many legal experts saying this actually means they are "about to indict" and they just want to hand it off to a "neutral" party first. I'll believe it when I see it.

Quote:
Katie S. Phang @KatiePhang

My hot take: No need for Garland to appoint a special counsel unless you're going to indict.

I'm sure the GOP and the MAGA world will accept an indictment as legitimate if some John Smith guy decides it instead of Garland.

Most likely, this will result in more delays.

The whole thing is completely (bleep) up. Trump has committed crimes every single day for the last 6 years, and his entire life before that. But we just need a little more time to decide whether to apply the rule of law. Sickening.

I'll say this - there are over 13,000,000 people in this country over the age of 80, many of which will live pat 90 and a good chunk past 100, especially as technology improves. Those people deserve representation in their government. Someone's age also is not an automatic disqualifier from being in a position of responsibility; in fact, it many times can be a qualifier for someone in such a position. I also believe that people in cognitive decline can still, and often do, provide valuable services to those around them.

I want Grassley and Feinstein gone because I don't think they adequately represent the American people (and, specifically, the values of Californians like myself). Their age has nothing to do with it, nor should it.

Feinstein is too conservative for today's Democratic party. It may have worked in the '90s, but now that many Dems want to legalize cannabis, raise the minimum wage and at least institute a public health care option, she's been left behind.

I'll say it - 80 is too old to hold federal office. POTUS, SCOTUS, Congress, Senate, Cabinet, Federal Judges - sit your old asses down. And I'm closer to 80 than 95% of this board.

That’s ageist BS. It needs to be based on the individual. I hate to tell you this, but the most consequential political achievements in a long time were by a couple 80 year olds and one not far off.

What were those achievements by the three?

I mean...it took them a whole year and half to go get classified documents they knew he had pretty much the entire time. They asked (no, BEGGED) him to please give them back. The United States begging for highly sensitive classified papers...they couldn't appear more reluctant to do anything to the man if they tried.

I know we all very cynical and skeptical here, so just I'm just passing on statements:

Quote:
Katie Benner @ktbenner

Statement of Special Counsel Jack Smith:
“The pace of the investigations will not pause or flag under my watch. I will exercise independent judgement and will move the investigations forward expeditiously and thoroughly to whatever outcome the facts and the law dictate.”

Quote:
Laurence Tribe @tribelaw

If a special counsel was to be appointed, I can think of no-one better suited than Jack Smith. Vast experience prosecuting public corruption cases, treacherous national security violations, and crimes against humanity. Absorbs complex facts instantly. Perfect for Donald Trump.

Trump has so many dogs nipping at his heels that one is bound to get a solid hold. If he comes out of these multiple investigations and indictments unscathed Teflon Don will belong to him exclusively.

If I read Garland correctly Trump brought the special counsel on himself when he announced his run for president. He'd be running against Garland's boss Joe Biden and prosecuting him would be a conflict of interest.

(Saudi crown prince granted immunity by US over Jamal Khashoggi killing - BBC News)

Quote:
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been granted immunity by the US in a lawsuit against him over the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

The announcement has been condemned by Khashoggi's family and friends.

In 2018, Jamal Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul following his public criticisms of its government.

The lawsuit was bought against Mohammed bin Salman after a document declassified by the Biden administration in 2021 revealed the crown prince was in some way complicit in the murder of Mr Khashoggi.

(David Rothkopf: Muslim-Ban Architect Stephen Miller Advising McCarthy ‘Should Be A Warning Sign’)

Quote:
Author of “American Resistance: The Inside Story of How the Deep State Saved the Nation” David Rothkopf tells Andrea Mitchell some Trump officials resisted dangerous Trump policies from people like Muslim ban architect Stephen Miller. Miller is now reportedly advising Kevin McCarthy, which Rothkopf says “should be a warning sign” that McCarthy is “going to be taking direction to some extent from Mar-a-Lago.”

Other than the rather obvious hypocrisy, part of their tactic actually fits the authoritarian playbook. Accuse the other side of doing what you are guilty of and you create an atmosphere where no one knows what to believe and everyone thinks all politicians are corrupt -- so what the big deal? If all politicians are corrupt then what does it matter that Trump took documents home or tried to use DOJ and IRS to go after his critics because "Democrats do it too." It's part of the propaganda war and the way they brainwash their own cult and confuse Independents and low information voters.

(I know you know this just pointing it out for others.)

That's the pretty much exactly what people said about Garland, who did nothing.

Muller said there was enough to charge but because of the unwritten rule of not charging a president (IIRC) that's what stopped it at being just a report.

No president here.

That was just an excuse to not prosecute at the time, just like Garland has been doing. No one, including an acting president, is above the law.

You obviously have missed all of my posts on the subject for the last few years. I’m under no illusions that Trump will ever be prosecuted and have been vocal that he won’t be and critical of people like Garland who skirted their obligation to uphold the law

You removed the above comment from its context where it was clearly in response to Mueller’s excuse for not proceeding with charges against Trump a few years ago. The comment was refuting the claim that there’s a “rule” against charging a sitting President of a crime. Not a statement that Trump will get charged.
