8 of the Pelicans’ next 20 games are against the Rockets, Spurs, Hornets, Magic or Thunder… their schedule is not very hard. If they get Zion back, they’ll figure it out. Let’s just hope we set them back another game on Sat.

As I detailed in this thread

MJST wrote:
Alright I just decided to put all this information here so that fans can understand where we stand with our first round picks. We can only trade our 2027 First Round Pick but that doesn't mean that is the soonest we can draft in the first round. The soonest is this coming draft the 2023 one.

The Lakers 2023 First Round Pick:
The Lakers technically have their 2023 First Round Pick.

The problem is that the Pelicans can swap with us.

That means let's assume the Lakers have a terrible season and get the 1st pick in the 2023 Draft(Victor Web) the Pelicans can say "that's ours now." And we wind up with their pick(wherever it lands) and the Pelicans get our pick.

What this also means is that no matter what, the Lakers will have a first round pick in 2023, it will just be either theirs or the Pelicans. So the best thing the Lakers fans could hope for is that if the Lakers are having a horrible season.. that the Pelicans have a horrible season too. So that way they aren't inclined to swap their pick with ours. If our picks both wind up in the lottery (or say Top 5) we'll still get one, the Pelicans will just take whichever is most advantageous.

This is what happened with the Atlanta Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks, where the Hawks drafted Luka, the Mavs drafted Trae Young, and they did a pick swap, landing Luka with the Mavs and Trae with the Hawks.

So Lakers 2023 First Round Pick: Owned/Swap (Just will be Lakers or the Pelicans spot)

The 2024 and 2025 First Round Picks

The Lakers will have either the 2024 First Round Pick or the 2025 First Round Pick. It all depends on which one the Pelicans decide to take.

The Pelicans then have a choice whether or not they want to use the Lakers 2024 First Round Pick or their 2025 First Round Pick. Whichever the Pelicans choose, the Lakers get the next pick and that pick becomes tradeable.

This means that if the Pelicans select the 2024 Pick, the 2025 Pick becomes ours and tradable, if the Pelicans select the 2025 Pick, the Lakers get the 2024 First Round Pick which becomes tradable.

The Lakers 2026 First Round Pick:
The Lakers fully own their 2026 Pick but because of the Stepien Rule they cannot trade it until the Pelicans decide which pick they want between the 2024 and 2025 Picks. Because the Pelicans can still select the 2025 pick which would violate the rule not allowing us to trade the 2026 Pick.

What this means going forward:
So in a nutshell our first round options are dependent on the Pelicans decisions, but also how their seasons go. For example: If the Pelicans do not pick swap and decide to take the 2025 first round pick from the Lakers then the Lakers will have

2023 First Round Pick
2024 First Round Pick
2026 First Round Pick
2027 First Round Pick

But it all depends on the Pelicans.

But first things first, The Lakers WILL HAVE a First Round Pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.. it just depends whether it will be our own.. or The Pelicans'.

The Lakers will have 4 of their next 5 FRPs. This year will be us or the Pelicans, then the Pelicans must choose if they want our 2024 or 2025 pick, and then we'll have whichever pick they don't choose as well as 26, 27 and 28.

The Pelicans have lost 10 straight games. Putting them within striking distance of the Lakers record. If the Pelicans and the Lakers finish in relatively the same spot, then even if they swap with our pick they will just be a few picks ahead or behind.

Of course if you want a Best Case Scenario if you're playing the lottery game. Then the Lakers getting the 1st pick and the Pelicans getting the 2nd pick would probably be yours. Because the Pelicans will swap and get Victor Web. But the Lakers would get Scoot, if that's who you're high on.

As it stands, if the Lakers and the Pelicans make the playoffs, they'll both have mid-lottery first round picks.

What the Lakers DON'T want to happen is for them to wind up with a top 5 pick and the Pelicans wind up with a pick from 18-25.

^ note that if the Pels take the 2025 pick, the Lakers can't trade the 2024 pick until draft night of the 2024 right?

This Zach Eday on Purdue has a lot of potential.

Do we have a chance to get him in the draft?

He has been impressive (7'4" /305lbs). He's projected as a second rounder but his stock is rising.
Edey's averages 22.1 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.2 blocks per game.

Pretty difficult to draft a big that isn't a big injury risk today. Even Wemby has a concerning injury history.

The thing about Edey is he keeps improving at a dramatic rate.

He's enormous and he obviously works on his game.

I think our first round is too high to reach down for him and our second round is too low.

But if he's available I'd take a look at him for the second.

Jett Howard is another young prospect that is rising up in the draft.

Edey is like that "Embiid" player that sneaks up during the season and winds up in the top 5. Not that he's comparable to Embiid, but that's how out of nowhere he feels this season as he started as a mid-late 2nd round pick before the season.

It's the fact I already know that 95% of the current centers and bigs in the NBA have no clue how to defend a hook shot, that he could eat all day with his developed one.

Whom the Lakers should keep an eye on imo though is Cason Wallace on Kentucky.

Another sleeper is Terquavion Smith of NC State

OMG YES PLEASE!

Draft him in the first round I don't care. This team has not had a young center to look forward to since maybe Zubac. Lakers need this guy, and he's MASSIVE. I would be a huge fan of this pick.

I dont care about injury risk. There's a risk in every pick. But if this kid HITS for this team? FINALLY having a real center would be such a boon for this organization.

New Orleans now in the 16th spot, after last night's loss to the Lakers. They have a pretty easy schedule to end the year, but also won't have Zion. With the Lakers on the upswing, and the Pels looking likely to stick around middle of the pack, I'm guessing our 2023 1st will be around mid-teens.

I was listening to Ramona on ESPNLA and she let something slip about West saying "hey that Purdue kid is pretty good"

She intended it as a random example... but why did she pick that school and person?

I'm not sure if she pulled that out of thin air, but I don't think her mind is clever enough to just make that up out of nowhere.

My guess is she was just shooting the sh*t with Jerry and he said something about the kid and she blurted it out without thinking.

Food for thought.

2023 Mock Draft | Laker 1st Round picks:

* Sports Illustrated Mock Draft #23
    Kris Murray
    6'8", 220 lbs. F
    Iowa Hawkeyes, Jr.
Murray averages 21 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. Could play either the three or the four at the NBA level.

* Fan Nation Mock Draft #17
    Dariq Whitehead
    Duke Blue Devils (Freshman)
    Position: SG , Height/Weight: 6'6, 190 lbs
    Quote:
Whitehead has NBA size and athleticism, to the degree he stands out on the college court as bigger, faster and stronger than most.
He has shown potential on both ends of the floor with a good motor to match his athletic traits, but will have to develop his shooting
and dribbling to lock in his status as a top draft prospect. - NBCsports

* B/R Mock Draft #16
    Maxwell Lewis
    Pepperdine, SG/SF, Soph.
Lewis’ game is very fluid with three-level shot-making and efficient 60.7 true shooting percentage.

* Clutch Points #23 | * CBS Sports Mock Draft #24
    Brice Sensabaugh
    Ohio State Buckeyes (Freshman)
    SG/SF, Height/Weight: 6'6, 235 lbs

    Quote:
There is not a place on the court where Brice Sensabaugh is afraid to take a shot. Most of his work is done in the midrange,
but his shooting prowess extends to beyond the arc where he is knocking them down at a 43% clip with 4.6 attempts per game. You can tell he already possesses a great feel for the game that should only increase as he gains more experience. - NBCsports

Can only hope you are joking in some bizarre way.

Young man should be charged for his callous actions in that shooting death.

No place for him on my Lakers.

I take this back. Did not see the latest news on him. He is a good 3 point shooter.

This is how it should be

We should win games because it’s in our interest to win games not lose games just so that we can give the better pick in the draft to another opponent

Make it so that the pelicans pick is a better pic than our pic and then I will be right with the world
