Lakers' future hinges on Howard

For Bryant's sake, Lakers better make it work with their All-Star center

By Bradford Doolittle | Basketball Prospectus

Decade after decade, generation after generation, there have always been certain things Los Angeles Lakers fans could count on. They know their ownership is trying to win, win now and win big. And as 16 championship banners will attest, the franchise knows how to get there, and money will not be an obstacle.

The Lakers have risen and fallen during the Kobe Bryant years, as almost any franchise will do over the course of 17 seasons. But you can judge a franchise by its peaks and valleys. For Los Angeles, that's meant five more titles at the apex, and a floor of a single sub-.500, non-playoff season. In terms of their association with sustained, high-level team success, the only peers Bryant has in contemporary professional sports are Derek Jeter in baseball and perhaps Tom Brady in the NFL.

Now 34, Bryant has spent half of his natural life in a Lakers uniform and 17 years into his career he's carrying as heavy a load as ever, and doing it well. Despite the early struggles of his controversy-plagued team, Bryant leads the NBA with a 29.5 scoring average that only begins to tell his story.

Bobcats-Lakers Preview

By JEFF MEZYDLO (STATS Senior Writer) | The Associated Press

Though the Los Angeles Lakers still have their issues, they're starting to find ways to win again.
The same can't be said for the reeling Charlotte Bobcats.
The Lakers look to match a season high with their third straight victory and hand the Bobcats a 12th consecutive defeat Tuesday night at Staples Center.
As injuries continue to sideline stars Steve Nash and Pau Gasol while those who are healthy try to adjust to coach Mike D'Antoni's system, Los Angeles (11-14) won two in a row to split a four-game trip. Two days after snapping a four-game slide with a 102-96 victory at Washington, the Lakers defeated Philadelphia 111-98 on Sunday. They didn't trail in the second half of either game.
"It's guys playing with confidence and guys trusting each other," Kobe Bryant said after going 12 for 21 from the field and scoring 34 points Sunday. "We played well, communicated well, kept attacking and good things happened.
"I know the questions have been coming because we hadn't been winning, but our time will come."

Lakers hope to get a boost at home versus Bobcats

Published December 18, 2012

Sports Network

Not only are the Los Angeles Lakers on just their third winning streak of the season, but they appear to be close to getting a key player back.
The Lakers, looking for a third straight win, could have Pau Gasol available on Tuesday night when they host the slumping Charlotte Bobcats, losers of 11 in a row.
Gasol has missed the past eight games due to tendinitis in both knees and returned to practice on Monday. The forward said he felt good afterward, but wasn't ready to make the decision on his status for tonight. Gasol is looking forward to getting back on the court.
"It's been a while. I miss playing and being out there competing with my teammates," Gasol said.
The looming return of Gasol, and possibly point guard Steve Nash by Christmas, could spark a Lakers team that has followed up four straight losses with back- to-back wins. A victory tonight would match Los Angeles' longest winning streak of the campaign.

NBA: Lakers win third straight in Gasol's return
December 19, 2012 2:28pm

At one point during the game, the Los Angeles Lakers found themselves staring down an 18-point deficit. Then, slowly but surely, they began to overcome it.

The Lakers won their third game in a row, rallying from a huge Charlotte Bobcats lead to take a 101-100 win, Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time) at the Staples Center in LA, in Pau Gasol's return from injury.

Gasol had missed nine games, dating back to the end of November, but in his return, stuffed the stats sheet to the tune of 10 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four blocks, to help LA improve to 12-14, 8-6 on their homecourt.

Charlotte on the other hand sank to 7-17, losers of their last 12.

A lay-up by Kemba Walker had it at 80-62, with 5:37 left in the third quarter, but the Lakers closed out the period on a 15-4 run, to trail by just seven entering the fourth quarter.

13 unanswered by LA put them up by six, 90-84, with 8:56 to play, drawing a Bobcats timeout. Bismack Biyombo later on hit in-close to knot things at 95-all, with a little more than three minutes remaining.

Back-to-back hits by Kobe Bryant had LA up four, 101-97, but an and-one play by former Laker Ramon Sessions drew the Bobcats to within a point.

Bryant was unable to add to the lead, missing a 21-footer, which gave Charlotte 21 ticks to work with. Off a timeout, Walker's attempt was rejected by Dwight Howard. Charlotte managed to get the rebound, but missed two more looks before the final buzzer sounded, allowing LA to walk off their floor with a "W."

Reports: Nash plans to return Saturday

By Rob Mahoney

If all goes according to plan, the Lakers’ season begins anew on Saturday. According to an initial report from Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports, Steve Nash – who is due for a series of workouts throughout the week with L.A. having an unusually light game schedule — intends to suit up for the Lakers’ Saturday game against the Warriors. That report was later confirmed by Sam Amick of USA Today, who also noted that Pau Gasol is likely to play in Tuesday’s game against the Bobcats provided that all goes well at shootaround. That would give Los Angeles its full starting lineup for the first time since Oct. 31st — a time when the very idea of a coaching change was woefully premature, the Princeton offense itself was under fire and Jodie Meeks was half-buried on the Lakers’ bench.

Pau Gasol will start tonight for the Los Angeles Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers' Voltron is almost fully formed. Steve Nash could be back as early as Saturday and now Mike D'Antoni has announced today that Pau Gasol will start for the team tonight against the Charlotte Bobcats.

Mike D'Antoni says @paugasol will start tonight. He responded well to practice yesterday. LAL were 3-5 w/out Gasol.

Gasol won't have any restrictions tonight in terms of minutes and should be available to play as many minutes as Mike D'Antoni deems necessary. This is a huge boost to the Lakers' defense, which has been pretty terrible without Pau Gasol on the court this season.

The Lakers' defensive rating without Pau on the court has been 105.7, according to NBA.com. With Pau on the court, the Lakers' defense has given up a spectacular 98.5 points per 100 possessions. With Pau and Dwight Howard on the court together, the Lakers defense gives up just 99.8 points per 100 possessions.

Lakers vs Bobcats: Gasol Starting
Pau Gasol returns to the Lakers after two weeks out, as the Lakers look to extend their first winning streak under Coach Mike D'Antoni on Tuesday night against the Charlotte Bobcats
By Shahan Ahmed | Tuesday, Dec 18, 2012 | Updated 1:34 PM

On Tuesday night, Pau Gasol will start for the Los Angeles Lakers after two weeks on the sidelines with tendinitis in both knees. Gasol practiced on Monday and has no limitations on playing time Tuesday night.

Gasol is not the only good injury news the Lakers received ahead of Tuesday’s game. Jordan Hill has also recovered from back spasms and is considered a game time decision against the Charlotte Bobcats.

The biggest injury news, however, continues to be Steve Nash’s recovery from a fractured fibula. After nearly seven weeks out, the point guard finally practiced on Monday. Later this week, Nash is scheduled to play in a full-contact scrimmage, and the 38 year-old point guard appears to be about a week away from returning to the lineup.

On Tuesday, Nash said he would “most likely” return on Christmas Day against the Knicks.

Lakers' video wishes fans a happy holidays

By Eric Pincus

December 18, 2012, 6:00 a.m.

The Lakers have sent out a message of cheer to their fans via a video-holiday card on their website.

Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol, Steve Nash, Jordan Hill, Metta World Peace and Darius Morris attempt to sing "Deck the Halls."

Naturally, Howard hams it up more than any other Laker.

Instead of joining in song, Kobe Bryant wishes fans a simple message, "Happy holidays from the Los Angeles Lakers."

Steve Blake, Antawn Jamison, World Peace, Gasol and Howard all chime in with brief holiday greetings as well.

Of course the Lakers will have to work on Christmas Day, hosting the New York Knicks.

Pau Gasol to return tonight after eight-game layoff
The Lakers were 3-5 in the forward's absence with tendinitis. He's got the green light to play without restriction against Charlotte tonight.

By Eric Pincus

December 18, 2012, 11:44 a.m.

Pau Gasol will return Tuesday night from an eight-game absence as the Lakers host the Charlotte Bobcats at Staples Center.

Gasol, who struggled with knee tendinitis through most of the early part of the season, has been given the green light to play without restriction.

"The sky is the limit, 48 [minutes], if overtime 50," joked Gasol.

The Lakers have struggled in his absence, losing five of eight.

"It's been difficult," said Gasol of sitting out. "I had no other choice. It's for the better. Now I'm back, so hopefully I'll be able to help, and help a lot."

The Lakers and Gasol are hopeful he's past any knee problems this year.

"Not too concerned about it,' said Gasol about a possible recurrence.

Nash explains the Lakers' struggles in D'Antoni's system

For weeks everybody but Steve Nash has had a say on how he will change things for the Los Angeles Lakers once he finally returns from a broken left leg.

How will he make Pau Gasol better? How will he make Mike D'Antoni's offense flow? How will he ease the burden on Kobe Bryant?

Fixing just one of these issues would help tremendously because while he's been out, it's been hard to even find where to start diagnosing exactly what ails the Lakers.

But with his return now in sight, potentially as early as Saturday against the Golden State Warriors, Nash has opened up a little about what he's seen while watching the Lakers play these past six weeks without him.

Hint: It hasn't been a pretty sight.

"We got in a rut there where we lost our confidence and we weren't playing with any fire or spirit or energy," Nash said Tuesday morning. "We weren't a proactive team defensively and our defense slipped. But when you're going through this transition with a new coach and new players and no training camp, we get a little down when we didn't play well and I think we lost our energy defensively."

At the offensive end it hasn't been much prettier. D'Antoni often speaks about looking for "energy" on offense, that if his system is being run correctly, the ball should move freely and find the natural weaknesses in the defense. His tone is usually philosophical, like he's speaking in a language only he is fluent in right now.

Charlotte Bobcats Can Compete with Los Angeles Lakers

The Charlotte Bobcats knew that their trip to the Staples Center on Tuesday to play the Los Angeles Lakers was going to present them a difficult task. After all, they already knew they would be facing two of the best players in the NBA in Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, as well as a Lakers team that is in desperate need of beginning a decent winning streak.
Then, news broke this afternoon that Pau Gasol will be returning to the Lakers starting lineup tonight against Charlotte. This only added to the task at hand for the Bobcats. However, they may not be as outmatched by the Lakers as you may think.
Though the Lakers have an advantage in talent and experience, their age has been a factor in their struggles. This older Los Angeles team has struggled with transition defense throughout this season, at least partially because their older legs aren’t cut out to defend that fast-paced style of play.
This plays to one of the strengths of Charlotte. The Bobcats have been wildly inconsistent offensively this season. However, their offense in transition is one of the things that has been steady. Their young guards like Kemba Walker, Ramon Sessions and Gerald Henderson all thrive off of speed in the open court. This could potentially cause problems for the Lakers.

Lakers-Bobcats What to watch
December, 18, 2012
DEC 18
10:10
AM PT
By Andy Kamenetzky
ESPNLosAngeles.com

Life hasn’t been much fun of late for the Charlotte Bobcats. Just seven victories were notched last season, setting a record for the lowest winning percentage in league history. With a 25 percent chance for the first pick in the 2012 draft, they watched helplessly as the New Orleans Hornets -- with a 13.7 percent chance -- hit the lottery six weeks after David Stern secured a new owner in Tom Benson (#ConspiracyTheoryGold). Then came this season’s tease. The first 12 games got off to a surprising 7-5 record, prompting some to wonder if this perennially downtrodden franchise had discovered the right coach in Mike Dunlap and unexpectedly turned a corner toward respectability.

Cue an 11-game losing streak still alive as the Bobcats take the Staples Center floor.

Winless since Nov. 24, whatever tinge of momentum felt nearly one month ago has since evaporated. Meanwhile, the Lakers come home having earned one of their most convincing wins of the season, and excitement is growing at the prospect of Steve Nash and Pau Gasol soon in uni. (The latter perhaps tonight, fingers crossed.) It would appear the Lakers are playing with the wind at their backs. Here are three things to be mindful of once the ball is jumped.

1. Defending without fouling

By nearly every measurement, the Bobcats aren’t very good at this whole “putting the ball in the basket” thing. They average just 96 points a night and have racked 100-plus just six times, with three(!) of those benchmark moments requiring overtime. Their overall shooting percentage (42.2) ranks 27th in the NBA, while the clip from behind the arc (34.0) is a slightly improved 21st. Their offensive efficiency (98.2) makes them a bottom-five team.

LOS ANGELES — Kobe Bryant scored four of his 30 points in the final 1:26 and the Los Angeles Lakers overcame an 18-point third-quarter deficit to beat Charlotte 101-100 on Tuesday night, handing the Bobcats their 12th straight loss.

Four shots, four misses: Charlotte Bobcats fall to L.A. Lakers 101-100

By Rick Bonnell

LOS ANGELES The Charlotte Bobcats missed four shots in the final seconds - two of them at the rim - to fall to the Los Angeles Lakers 101-100 and extend their losing streak to 12 games.

Kemba Walker (28 points) drove for what would have been the winning basket, but his shot was blocked by Lakers center Dwight Howard. The Bobcats got up three more attempts in the dwindling seconds, but all three failed to fall through the rim.

Kobe Bryant led the Bobcats with 30 points. Gerald Henderson came up with 19 for the Bobcats.

Bryant broke a 97-97 tie with 1 1/2 minutes left, arching his back for a driving layup past Henderson. Bryant followed that with a pull-up 18-footer, extending the Lakers' lead to four,

Bobcats guard Ramon Sessions answered with a drive to the rim. Howard (16 points and 18 rebounds) was called for goal-tending on the play and Jodie Meeks was called for a foul. Sessions hit the free throw to close the gap to one with 47 seconds left.

Lakers Survive Scare From Bobcats
Dec 18th, 2012 at 10:27 pm by Chris ShellcroftRecaps

That the Lakers won despite falling behind by 18 in the third to the Mistake By the Great MJ aka the Charlotte Bobcats says they are improving. It doesn’t say much that the Lake Show had to hold on by the skin of their teeth to beat a team playing the worst ball in the league at the moment. This 101-100 victory was as much gut check as it was gut punch.
To be sure a better team would have beaten the Lakers tonight despite a very competitive effort. Overall you can’t say this all-too-close contest was the result of another indifferent Mike D’Antoni dandy. Metta World Peace lit a fire in his first stint off the bench, reverting to his original role under Mike Brown as 6th man. MWP’s defensive intensity was on display every time he touched the court. That moved proved a stroke of genius by D’Antoni.
Of course the reason why Metta made his 6th man debut was to make way for the return of Pau Gasol. The Spaniard got 29 minutes of burn in his return and while his presence was welcomed it did little for L.A.’s defensive inefficiencies.
Once again a duo of quick guards killed the Lake Show as Kemba Walker and one-time Laker Ramon Sessions sliced through the Purple and Gold like a sushi knife through yellowtail. Those two combined for a sick 48 points and 13 dimes.
Mix in 19 from Gerald Henderson including two in emphatic Blake Griffin-esque fashion and the Bobcats were primed to pull off another upset in Staples. We’ve seen Charlotte own the Lakers on their floor before. History looked fated to repeat itself again.
Then one Kobe Bryant put his fingerprints all over the game.
