Lakers can't keep up with Indiana Pacers in 118-98 loss

By Mike Bresnahan
February 25, 2014, 6:23 p.m.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Lakers continued to stagger, losing to the Indiana Pacers, 118-98, Tuesday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The game was close at halftime, and then it wasn't, as the Lakers' offense stifled for the last 24 minutes by the league's top-ranked defense.

The Pacers own the NBA's best overall (43-13) and home records (27-3).

The Lakers (19-38) fell further behind the Sacramento Kings for the Western Conference's worst record.

Kent Bazemore had his third career-high in as many games, scoring 23 points, though he made only eight of 19 shots.

In the first half, the Lakers seemed happy to be away from Staples Center, where they have lost nine of their last 10 games.

They trailed the Pacers at halftime, 57-54, but their offense faltered from there as they got careless with the ball (seven turnovers in the third quarter).

Pacers forward Paul George had 20 points on six-for-18 shooting. He did not play in the fourth quarter. Lance Stephenson was the only Pacers starter to play in the fourth quarter.

THIRD QUARTER

The Lakers are quickly losing any chance at upsetting the Indiana Pacers.

They gave ground badly in the third quarter and trailed going into the fourth, 91-70, Tuesday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Turnovers were the main problem, the Lakers committing eight in the quarter, along with an almost predictable slow-down in scoring. The Lakers managed only 16 points in the third, making six of 18 shots against the NBA's top defense.

Kent Bazemore was on his way to a third career-high in his last three games, but his scoring touch stalled after 13 points in the first half. Bazemore missed all four of his third-quarter shots and had 15 points going into the final quarter.

Paul George has 20 points and George Hill has 14 for the Pacers (42-13)

Update: The Lakers won the last time they were in Memphis, on Dec. 17, but, par for their season, lost Kobe Bryant, who hasn't played since because of a fractured knee he sustained that night. Memphis is one of the few teams with a better road record (15-10) than home record (16-14). The Grizzlies are ninth in the Western Conference, 11/2 games behind No. 8 Phoenix and within three of sixth-place Golden State.

George Helps Pacers Pull Away From Lakers, 118-98
INDIANAPOLIS February 26, 2014 (AP)
By MICHAEL MAROT AP Sports Writer

Paul George scored 12 of his 20 points in the third quarter, Evan Turner had 13 points in his Pacers debut, and Indiana beat the Los Angeles Lakers 118-98 on Tuesday night.

Indiana improved its league-leading record to 43-13.

Kent Bazemore finished with a career-high 23 points and Jodie Meeks added 15 for the Lakers (19-38), who have the worst record in the West. The loss also ended Los Angeles' three-game winning streak at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Lakers stayed closer than expected through the first 2 ½ quarters and trailed just 59-58 early in the third.

But George then scored 10 points in a decisive 14-5 spurt that gave Indiana an 80-68 lead with 2:58 to go in the period. The Pacers finished the quarter on an 11-2 run to make it 91-70, and the Lakers couldn't get closer than 19 the rest of the way.

It was a huge night for George and Indiana's continually evolving bench.

George had seven rebounds and six assists despite spending the entire fourth quarter on the bench with most of Indiana's starters. David West had 11 points and 12 rebounds, Roy Hibbert finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four blocks, and the Pacers got 50 points from the bench with their newest player, Turner, leading the way.

Lavoy Allen, who came with Turner from Philadelphia last Thursday in a trade deadline deal, played the final 4 ½ minutes. Andrew Bynum, who signed with Indiana on Feb. 1, did not play

Paul George's third-quarter surge pulls Pacers from reach of Lakers

Associated Press

Pacers Pull Away From Lakers

Paul George led the Pacers with 20 points in Indiana's 118-98 win over Los Angeles.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana already had the league's No. 1 defense. The Lakers discovered Tuesday that the Pacers' offense is becoming just as potent.

Paul George had 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists, newcomer Evan Turner and five other Pacers reached double figures, and the top team in the East blew out the worst team in the West, 118-98.

"We're probably one of the deepest teams in the NBA, where one through 15 can actually really play," Pacers guard George Hill said after scoring 14 points. "It shows that if we continue to move the ball and share the ball like that, it can be anybody's night."

This is precisely what Indiana (43-13) envisioned when it pulled the trigger on the biggest deal before last Thursday's deadline.

Team president Larry Bird spent most of the offseason reconstructing a bench that didn't quite get the job done against Miami in last year's Eastern Conference finals. So he's continued tweaking it throughout the season, signing former All-Star center Andrew Bynum 3½ weeks ago and then sending former All-Star Danny Granger to Philadelphia for Turner and Lavoy Allen.

The Pacers looked like a more explosive team in the second half of Turner's first game. He finished with 13 points and six rebounds and was 6 of 12 from the field, leading the Pacers bench to a season-best 50 points.

Indiana swept the season series with the Lakers for the first time since the 1991-1992 season
Laker guard Kent Bazemore scored a career-high 23 points, upping his previous-best 17 points from Sunday

There were little reminders Tuesday night that Evan Turner wasn't in Philadelphia.

The moment he walked onto the court, warmly greeted by most of the sell-out crowd at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The post-up isolation plays he found in the halfcourt offense. And even more so, the wardrobe he decided on while standing in front of his new closet in Indianapolis.

"You go from wearing sweaters to wearing blazers," Turner joked about the biggest difference in leaving a 15-win team to joining a contender. "It builds you up a lot."

BOXSCORE: Pacers 118, Lakers 98

Turner had the green light to be himself in the Pacers' 118-98 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. During an offensive torrent when the Pacers (43-13) created season highs in field goal makes and attempts as well as bench points, Turner finished with 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting.

"He's just a good basketball player," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. "He has good saavy, good IQ. He understands his teammates. He picks things up quickly and like I said, he looked comfortable."

Pau Gasol isn't happy after the Lakers are crushed by Pacers, 118-98

Gasol never mentions Coach Mike D'Antoni by name, but he cites a lack of discipline, too much one-on-one play and a questionable lineup choice.

By Mike Bresnahan

INDIANAPOLIS — The relationship between Pau Gasol and Lakers Coach Mike D'Antoni, an uneasy truce in recent months, took a turn for the worse Tuesday.
It spilled over after the Lakers were pounded by the Indiana Pacers, 118-98, a promising first half tumbling into a predictable, if not inevitable, ending for the Lakers at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Gasol was irritated with teammates putting up too many one-on-one shots and bothered by D'Antoni's small-ball lineup, which pitted the slender Wesley Johnson against power forward David West.

Gasol called for more discipline, presumably from D'Antoni, saying there were too many "individual actions" right now.
Eleven of the Lakers' 15 players are in the final year of their contracts, a big problem on a losing team, no?
"Probably. That's part of it," Gasol said. "But that's why you have to be disciplined and implement discipline. That's how you kind of make that better or make that not a factor. I don't think there's a lot of discipline right now."
Teammates needed to be unselfish by making sure the ball was passed to an open player, Gasol added.
"Otherwise it's really deflating and takes a lot of energy away from individuals," said Gasol, in the last year of a contract paying him $19.3 million this season.

Lakers Must Play Smarter
INDIANAPOLIS -- After a three-point game at halftime turned into a 118-98 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday, Los Angeles Lakers big man Pau Gasol went off during his postgame comments, blaming the team's woes on a lack of discipline.

With 12 of the Lakers' 15 players without a contract for next season and the Lakers 15 games out of a playoff spot with 25 games left to play, Gasol indirectly challenged coach Mike D'Antoni to take control of his team that the 33-year old believes is being sabotaged by selfish play.

"That's why you have to be disciplined and implement discipline, that's how you kind of make that better or make that not a factor," Gasol said when asked about the Lakers' collection of players, himself included, on expiring deals."I don't think there's a lot of discipline right now."

When asked to detail what type of discipline he was seeking, Gasol brought up another issue, pointing to D'Antoni's decision to play a small-ball lineup against the plus-sized Pacers.

"The type that will allow us to compete a little better," said Gasol after Indiana outrebounded L.A. 62-42. "I think when you have a lineup like Zach [Randolph] and Marc [Gasol] tomorrow (the Lakers finish off their two-game road back-to-back Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies), you have to match up accordingly a little bit, I think. That's just me."

Gasol wasn't done there.

Gasol questions strategy, discipline after Lakers loss to Pacers

Indiana’s Paul George, left, goes to the basket after getting around the Lakers’ Wesley Johnson during the second half of Tuesday’s game in Indianapolis. AJ mast – the associated press
By Mark Medina, Los Angeles Daily News
POSTED: 02/25/14, 10:25 PM PST |
INDIANAPOLIS >> Pau Gasol emerged out of the locker room with a stern expression and an irritated tone in his voice.

The reasons went beyond the Lakers’ 118-98 loss Tuesday to the Indiana Pacers at Bakers Life Fieldhouse, marking their sixth loss in the past seven games. It also entailed Gasol’s frustration with Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni fielding a smaller lineup to handle a loaded Pacers frontcourt that outrebounded the Lakers, 62-42, and posted 50 points in the paint.

Lakers forward Wesley Johnson (15 points in 25 minutes) mostly had those defensive responsibilities instead of the Lakers’ frontcourt in Chris Kaman (14 minutes), Jordan Hill (10 minutes) and Robert Sacre (six minutes).

“If we want to continue to play small, we have to play to that advantage and utilize our quickness,” said Gasol, who had 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting, nine rebounds and four blocks. “If you get outrebounded by 20 rebounds, I don’t care who you are or what you do it’s not going to work and we’re not going to win.”

Has Pau looked at our record? It's over, relax. This is just a tryout for next season now, Pau shouldn't play more than 25 mpg @ this point. No sense in grinding guys into the ground any further.

Pau is RIGHT!!!! It's all about match ups, something MDA is not known for. You can't play small ball against the likes if Indiana, Memphis!!! They got a big and they got athletic guys out there. They gonna outrebound you and then what? Your team is not as talented right now, play to your strength. I haven't watched a game all of February. The constant heart ache during the game gets me in a nasty mood i can do without. Especially since most of these games are winnable if not for our dumb coach.

This is why a team w/Kobe & Pau could never tank on purpose. They can't relax. They're champions and they are proud no matter what the record.

Should, have traded Pau when we had the chance, we might see a lot of bickering and whining in the next couple of weeks, because we failed to trade the veteran players at the trade deadline.

Pau's not qualified to take the reins, he doesn't have the personality.

I wonder why Kobe's not taking a more active role in getting the team to play together? He doesn't have to be on the floor to do that.

Having said that, I wonder also if he's trying?

Nick Young sits out with another injury
By Mark Medina, Los Angeles Daily News
POSTED: 02/25/14, 10:24 PM PST |
INDIANAPOLIS >> From his game-winning shots to his commanding personality, Kobe Bryant always remained an idol for Nick Young.

But now he’s following Bryant’s footsteps regarding something depressing. Young’s sitting out with another injury, missing the Lakers’ 118-98 loss Tuesday to Indiana Pacers at Bakers Life Fieldhouse tonight against the Memphis Grizzlies.

After feeling additional swelling during the Lakers’ loss Sunday against Brooklyn in his fractured left knee, it’s possible Young will return Friday when the Lakers host the Sacramento Kings at Staples Center.

“I’m Kobe now,” Young cracked. “I missed the whole shootaround and didn’t move.”

Young returned in two weeks after nursing both a bone bruise and nondisplaced fracture in the patella of his left knee, and Young admitted that didn’t entail taking a return MRI. Young remained adamant he doesn’t need to be reevaluated, but he listened to the Lakers’ training staff to sit.

Young downplayed whether he returned too soon.

“I was playing through adrenaline,” said Young, who posted only 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting in 19 minutes in the Lakers’ loss Sunday to Brooklyn. “I kept telling myself that I think I can play. It wasn’t like an ACL injury where I had to sit out.”

Because, the coach is the one who is responsible for that, also it's hard getting the team to play together when the coach keeps changing line-ups every game.

I'm sure he is, but since he's not traveling with the team, it's kinda hard. I don't think his influence would translate over a speakerphone.
