The Lakers’ new practice facility is the latest sign of a new tone for the team
by Harrison Faigen - silverscreenandroll.com

Los Angeles has a new direction under construction alongside their new practice facility.

It’s been covered to death, but the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2015-16 season was essentially a throwaway. Kobe Bryant’s viking funeral monopolized not only the coverage of the team, but an insane 31.9 percent of their possessions as well.

Bryant is gone now, and seemingly so is the previous message coming from the franchise. From hiring Byron Scott two years ago in an attempt to “bring back Lakers basketball,” to the constant deference to Bryant’s legacy and accomplishments, much of the last several seasons was marred by the stark contrast between worshiping the team’s illustrious past and the realities of their consistently lottery-bound present.

That tone seems to be changing. Symbolically on the day the Lakers revealed the new, state-of-the-art UCLA Health Training Center, the team seems to be focusing further on forgetting about the old and bringing in the new.

The Lakers’ past may be filled with tales of greatness, but those heroes are gone. For Los Angeles to reach their previous heights, they will have to move forward with their young core of Brandon Ingram, D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson, and Larry Nance, Jr. The team seems to have realized this

“Moving into this new facility is going to allow (the young players) to create their own identity,” team president Jeanie Buss told Joey Ramirez of Lakers.com. “I’ve said to Brandon Ingram: ‘Please don’t worry about all the pictures on the walls and the history of the Lakers. You be you. People are excited to see who you are and what you bring. Don’t feel like you have to replicate anybody that’s been here before.'

"Certainly moving into this new facility will allow them to do that,” Buss continued. “To take on their own identity.”

Lakers and UCLA Health Announce Naming Rights Partnership For New Lakers Training Facility
by Joey Ramirez - nba.com

The Los Angeles Lakers and UCLA Health have agreed to a long-term partnership that includes UCLA Health’s designation as the exclusive in-game health providers for the team’s players and the naming rights for the team’s new training facility and offices in El Segundo, it was announced today. The name of the facility will be the UCLA Health Training Center.

Construction of the facility, located at 2275 E. Mariposa Avenue, began on September 18, 2015 and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2017. The Lakers and UCLA Health also will be engaged in community, educational and research efforts in injury prevention and sports performance for the Lakers.

“We’re extremely pleased and excited about our new partnership with UCLA Health,” said Lakers President/Governor and co-owner Jeanie Buss. “Their innovative, forward-thinking, research-oriented medical team and facilities are unsurpassed, and their focus on not only treating, but preventing, injuries will translate into the ultimate goal of helping our players perform better on-court and to prolonging their professional careers. In addition, UCLA Health’s community relations and community commitment views and philosophies are so closely aligned to those of the Lakers that they make us perfect partners to further those goals and programs.”

Dr. John Mazziotta, M.D., Ph.D, Vice Chancellor of UCLA Health Sciences and CEO of UCLA Health, said the partnership with the Lakers will provide both organizations with an unparalleled ability to share the message of health and fitness with a broad and diverse audience. “UCLA Health is committed to improving the health of our community, both for individuals and population-wide,” he said.

The partnership is aligned with both organizations’ existing work within the community.

Luke Walton says he’s undecided if Brandon Ingram or Luol Deng will start for the Lakers this season
by Harrison Faigen - silverscreenandroll.com

Los Angeles has a good problem on their hands at the wing position

The Los Angeles Lakers don’t even begin training camp for several weeks, so it’s not exactly surprising that head coach Luke Walton has not decided on the team’s starting lineup (or at the very least is unwilling to divulge it). Still, given that the Lakers just gave veteran forward Luol Deng a four-year deal worth approximately $72 million, it would seem safe to assume he’s going to start, right?

“You can pencil in whoever you want [to the starting lineup], I don’t have anyone penciled in right now,” Walton said when asked whether or not he was willing to declare Deng the starter. “Everyone earns his spot. You come into camp, you compete against other players, you respect your teammates, but whoever outplays the next guy in line, that’s who gets to start.”

Los Angeles doesn’t have a ton of depth this season, except for at small forward. Deng played his best minutes at the four last year, but he’s been a wing for the majority of his career and would seem most likely to start at the three. However, the Lakers did just take Brandon Ingram second overall in the 2016 NBA Draft, and he’ll need time to develop as well.

So you have no opinion on whether Ingram will be better than Klay?

About 99% positive. You'd have to have a mod confirm.

Lakers Legend Jamaal Wilkes Believes Team Needs ‘Clean Slate’ Without Kobe Bryant

Quote:
“It helped to have Dr. Buss and Jerry West and Bill Sharman and those guys….I think this year it’s going to involve a lot of trust and a lot of patience, and a lot of learning. A core group that’s going to have to take responsibility and hold each other accountable.”

Luke Walton believes Lakers “will be a good defensive team”
Posted on October 3, 2016 by Mark Medina

Quote:
Walton sounded confident when he said, “I think we will be a good defensive team.” He listed the acquisition of 7-foot-1 rim protector Timofey Mozgov. Walton touted the team’s “defensive versatility,” ranging from 12-year veteran Luol Deng, third-year forward Julius Randle, second-year forward Larry Nance Jr., third-year forward Tarick Black and rookie swingman Brandon Ingram.

“That’s where we can make a lot of progress,” Walton said. “If we can get after it on defense, that will allow us to get out and run. That’s what we want to do.”

Confirming a July report, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, said that his team is exploring the possibility of moving to a new arena once their lease with the Staples Center expires, tweets Dan Woike of The Orange County Register. Ballmer has no intention of ever taking the franchise out of Los Angeles, but has interest in moving to a building that wouldn’t be shared with the Lakers.

One Team, One Stat: Three years of bad defense for Lakers

Quote:
Last season, the Lakers ranked 30th in defensive efficiency and became the first team in a 30-team league to rank in the bottom three for three straight seasons. (The last team to do it was the Golden State Warriors from 1999-00 to 2002-03 -- four straight years before the Charlotte Bobcats joined the league.)

How will the rookies and youth movements around the league fare?

Quote:
The Lakers are in one of the more unique positions of any team as they not only said goodbye to a franchise legend and the team’s leader last spring, but they also changed the head coach and overall basketball philosophy with the hire of Luke Walton and staff and now find themselves in a process of essentially rebranding with a bevy of talented, young players with no discernible leader for the first time in 20 years.

They did a solid job of adding veteran presences both in the locker room and on Walton’s bench in order to assist with the transition, but it actually appears as though the franchise is fully prepared to allow this core group to learn and grow together in the same organic nature as they did following Magic Johnson’s initial departure from the game about 25 years ago.

For longtime fans, while the uncertainty isn’t something they are accustomed to, there also has to be a certain level of excitement based directly upon the expectation and splendor of the unknown.

Former Laker Ryan Kelly signed and waived by Boston Celtics (expected to join Maine Red Claws)

Quote:
The Boston Celtics waived Ryan Kelly on Saturday afternoon, clearing the power forward to join their D-League team as an affiliated player.

Kelly practiced with the Celtics on Saturday, one day after he was signed to the team, but will ultimately land with the Maine Red Claws in the D-League, according to ESPN's Chris Forsberg.

"He killed us (with the Lakers) two years ago," Stevens remembered after practice Saturday. "He had 19. I think it was here (in Boston) wasn't it? And spacing the floor, and he passes the ball. Kind of what we were talking about with Kelly (Olynyk). His ability to make the right basketball play has always been one of his greatest strengths."

Clippers, Lakers starting the same race, but not at the same pace

Quote:
For the 32 years L.A. has been a two-team hoops town, the Lakers and Clippers have been on opposing trajectories.

The history requires only a brief retelling: While the Lakers were good for three decades, the Clippers stunk.

When the Clippers began vying for championships under Rivers and on the shoulders of one of the league’s few All-Star trios, the Lakers were preoccupied setting team records for losses in three consecutive years.

This season – which starts for the Lakers on Wednesday, and the Clippers on Thursday – has a different tone.

L.A.’s two teams finally appear to be moving in the same direction, although they reside at dramatically different points on the continuum of progress.
