Does anyone believe he's doing this of his own accord?

I don't think Santos will last his full term. He's not only a blight on the Repuklican party he's a blight on politics. If he's allowed to stay in office it will set a dangerous precedent.

(How the Republican Party Went Crazy - PG:CC with David Corn)

Quote:
Today we are joined by American political journalist and author, David Corn. David is the Washington DC bureau chief for Mother Jones Magazine, a major cable news commentator, analyst for MSNBC, and best-selling author of a slew of books about American politics including the one we’ll be discussing today “American Psychosis: A Historical Investigation of How the Republican Party Went Crazy”. According to David’s research, the insanity currently going on with the GOP is not so much a departure from the norms, as a logical conclusion of an established pattern. Since the 1950’s, the Republicans have knowingly encouraged and exploited extremism, bigotry, and paranoia to retain or gain power. As one review put it, “American Psychosis is a sobering look at the ideological destruction, born of cynicism and opportunism, of a once principled party.”

The invasion of air space is a serious violation. If the ballon has guidance capabilities Biden should demand China maneuver the ballon out of US airspace. IMO if they don't comply the ballon should be shot down.

What makes the Presidency such a difficult undertaking is such decisions encompass complications, political and otherwise the public is not privy to.

Without that information we the public offer opinions based on what the media gives us. IMO that's making uninformed decisions that could be dangerous.

Chinese balloon now over central US as Blinken cancels visit
By MATTHEW LEE

LINK

Quote:
President Joe Biden declined to comment on the matter when questioned at an economic event. Two 2024 reelection challengers, former President Donald Trump, and Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and U.N. ambassador, said the U.S. should immediately shoot down the balloon.

Quote:
A senior defense official said the U.S. prepared fighter jets, including F-22s, to shoot it down if ordered. The Pentagon ultimately recommended against that, noting that even as the balloon was over a sparsely populated area of Montana, its size would create a debris field large enough to put people at risk.

The Chinese might want the USA to panic and take down the balloon.

By not responding (in that way), the USA might be thwarting the Chinese government's plans.

That's what I mean. We don't have the valid information necessary to form the opinions you voiced. The information we have is speculative at most.

Your opinion is as valid as mine. I qualified my position. I also said we don't have all the information.

Representative Mike Gallagher (R-WI), Chairman of the Select Committee on China and member of the Intelligence and Armed Services Committees, joins Andrea Mitchell to weigh in. “I don't think the Chinese Communist Party would hesitate to shoot down an American asset that was in their airspace,” says Gallagher.

The military advised Biden the potential risk to civilian lives was not worth the taking down a balloon that was not likely providing any further intelligence gathering that China already has.
