Saying that Melo replaces Kuzma means you've never watched Melo or Kuzma |
Carmelo Anthony was the backup power forward on last year's team, scoring load off the bench. What was Kyle Kuzma's role again? Backup.. power forward.. scoring load off the bench.. Kyle was paid $13 million and Carmelo was paid the veteran minimum. _________________ “God knew they couldn’t be on this Earth without each other. He had to bring them home to heaven together.”

You don't think there's a reason why one was paid $13m and the other the minimum? Sure, Melo could score, but he was routinely torched on the other end too.
I wouldn't hesitate to trade Melo for Kuz if that was feasible. I would trade Russ for Kuz straight up too. _________________ LBJ missed games:

I think Austin Reaves was expected to replace Alex Caruso. He did.
If you are looking for a narrative, then it should start with Talen Horton Tucker. He was, by far, the biggest disappointment. |
My sense is this wasn't the Lakers thinking process.
They simply wanted to get three stars together. Once they did that, they cobbled the best supporting cast they could get from free agents and vet minimums.
I doubt they were thinking X player is going to replace Y player in the way you outlined things, with an attempt to replicate the previous team. They just picked up as many guys as they could, leading to a lot of mediocre redundancies, and were going to let the scrum figure itself out. |

Kyle was paid $13 million. Kyle was expected to be a starter, the "third option."
Talen was paid $10 million. No expectations? He was the fourth or fifth guard off the bench. _________________ “God knew they couldn’t be on this Earth without each other. He had to bring them home to heaven together.”

This is how teams looked at basketball like 20 years ago, except even they acknowledged this thing called defense. The Lakers lost point differentials every time Melo was on the floor because he bled more points than he scored. Kuzma was the opposite. That's why he was worth 13 million and Melo was available for the veteran minimum.
The Lakers rounded out their entire roster with net negative guys after releasing/trading away all the net positive guys away. It's a big reason they went from one of the best teams in the NBA to a lottery team in the span of a year.
I'll credit this much to your "Melo scored 13 ppg off the bench, which is also what Kuzma scored, hence he's a better value" thinking: That is sadly how our front office also thinks. And it's why this team is going down the toilet. |

left out the part where he provided half the rebounding rate, half the assist rate, and was one of the worst defensive players in the league. So bad he was a net negative even with his "13 points"
Not even gonna bother with "Austin Reaves replaced Alex Caruso" unless the metric you're going by is "was white"
how drunk do you have to be to see basketball like this and still be alive |
A fun exercise is to go through our roster last year and count the guys that would be rotation players for any of the teams currently left. You won’t need both hands to count. |
Our offseason signings:
Bazemore
Ellington
Bradley
Deandre
Dwight
THT
Monk
Ariza
Nunn
Melo
Nunn, Dwight and Monk are the only guys that would be in a rotation for a playoff team, and I wouldn't even call that a certainty for the latter 2. Monk's scoring will disappear from time to time and is the exact type of player you hunt in the playoffs. Dwight sat out entire series in our title run. Deandre, ellington, Melo, Ariza, and AB should all be in China.
The Lakers FO managed to sign 2 playoff rotation quality players and one of them was out for the season with a bone bruise. Joey and Jesse Buss got Gabriel, Reaves and Gabriel with far less resources at their disposal. It's not even a question who should be building the roster. |

Make that the latter 3 for me. Undersized guys who don’t play D don’t see the court a lot in the playoffs. Dwight isn’t playing unless there’s a specific situational reason to and his ship has probably even sailed in that regard. _________________ 14-5-3-12 |

Westbrook to NY for Randle/Noel/Fournier
Noel essentially replaces Dwight next year and we get 2 guys that would fit better then Westbrook and could easily get traded if it doesn’t work out. |

So tired of the roster turning over every year. Hopefully this years keepers will be
1. LeBron
2. AD
3. THT (would be trading low right now)
4. Reaves
5. Johnson
6. Gabriel
7. Dwight (3rd C)
8. Monk
Hopefully Westbrook is able to turn into 2-3 solid parts on "bad" deals (Hayward, Rozier, Hield, Brogdon)
Flip Nunn for a wing like Cam Reddish. Think that would be a logical swap for both teams
Return Damin Jones home please (Whiteside as plan B) at vet min
Target wing vets like Otto Porter, Gary Harris,Delon Wright, Danuel House, Derrick Jones.
Thomas Bryant, Thad Young, Joe Ingles, Bjelica, Ibaka, Jalen Smith, Trey Lyles, Taurean Prince, TJ Warren, Paschall, Jeremy Lamb, Jarret Culver, Kris Dunn, Jaylen Hoard. Lot of interesting names that should be vet min targets _________________ "He's a Zen master, so he can speak to you, and he doesn't need a microphone; you can hear him in your head, 'Ron, don't shoot, don't shoot.' All for a game that wasn't winnable. Just sucks. |
That does suck. This may well be the end of his career. It would be pretty hard for a 35-year-old player to come back from a torn ACL. |

Would anyone entertain a trade for 25 year old Jonathan Isaac?
Jonathan Bender 2.0

Good thing 76ers didn't fire Rivers otherwise the Lakers might have hired him and started another coaching carousel.
I still think Vogel is still the best of all of the currently available headcoaches. We should have kept the headcoach and fired the GM and try to find more young, energetic players like Caruso thru the undrafted market for Vogel. |

That would require Jeanie actually knowing basketball, and having a competent basketball mind advising her, instead of Linda.
They screwed up and put it all on the coach to save their butts. So now those same people that screwed up can lean on a new "strong voice" to get the team back into playoffs with 45 wins and they can pat themselves in the back.
It's really sad to see play out. |
