Might as well have one place for some direct comparisons.

Just the last game against Denver for now.

Andre, 4 pts (2-5, 0 3pt), *0* Reb, 1 Ast, team low -11, 22 min

Marc, 10 pts (3-4, 3-4 3pt), 7 Reb, 2 Ast, team high +17, 17 min

hmm

No need for them to compare. Dre is the starter, Gasol is the backup. Both should have playing time. No need to bench either one of them.

So, um, no. Marc is not the backup. ( He should be though ) A man named Harrell is. He has dreads. You can't miss him. Marc has been benched for many recent games. You might have noticed that.

I just don't think this has anything to do with fairness. This is about winning a chip. Now, if we promised Dre something, which we should not have done, then that is another thing, but I hope we did no such thing to get him to sign.

LOL are you new here? I am one of those preaching that Gasol should play.
So you still want Trezz as backup Center after all of his (bleep) @ center spot? Are you watching the games?

I noticed, which is why I could not understand your confusion about who the backup C has been for the last month. Anywho, comparisons will justify more time for Marc, which is a good thing. I guess we agree on something.

Drummond starting 5, Gasol backup 5, Harrell backup 4, Markieff Morris benched.

I don’t care who starts, but Marc should close!

Marc has more composure, the ball is secure in his hands, and the floor spacing is better. Night and day in the fourth against Denver.

I agree with you. Ultimately, whoever is playing at center should depend on the matchup. Could very well be anyone among dre, trez and gasol. Could even be ad in certain stretches as well.

The only reason Marc is not a starter is that he can organize and keep the second unit in check. Other than that - matchup advantages should dictate who is getting more time.

Start Gasol, and let Drummond and Harrell battle for the backup minutes.

And pray Markieff starts hitting his 3s again because he's more important than all three centers against teams not named the Nuggets or Sixers.

This is kind of reactionary for me. Dre is fine as a starter. Once bron and ad get up to speed, the 3 will complement each other better. Marc off the bench fits him more, he can dominate and be the leader of that 2nd unit especially defensively.

For me the optimal rotation is really simple:
-Marc Gasol should start because he provides spacing for LeBron and Dennis to slash. And he allows AD to play inside the paint and actually work as a roll man instead of just standing at the three point line.
-Drummond should play in bench lineups where LeBron is on the floor. He should not play in bench lineups when just AD is on the floor. He should get the bulk of the backup five minutes as he’s a considerably better defensive player than Trez.
-Trez should only play in certain matchups. Ideally he should be paired with AD who provides the rim protection he doesn’t. Trez should probably never play at the five against teams with big, athletic backup centers. And he shouldn’t be paired with multiple negative defenders like Mclemore, THT, and a disengaged Markieff. He can be used, however, if the Lakers need to run an aggressive trapping scheme because his speed is an asset.
-But the closing five in almost every scenario should be Anthony Davis. When he is at the five it opens up so much of the Lakers offense. He’s just too fast for centers and it makes switching against the LeBron-AD pick and roll impossible. It also puts the best rim protector on the team closest to the rim on defense. It also allows the Lakers to play any three of their four best players after LeBron and AD at once - namely, Schroeder, KCP, Kuzma, and Caruso. Frankly, if not for AD’s reluctance to play the five he should start at the five. When you combine his talent and his versatility on defense, I’d rather have him at the five than even the likes of Embiid or Jokic. There’s a reason that AD played 60 percent of his minutes at center during last postseason’s title run. He’s just a beast at that position and it unlocks the best version of the Lakers.

About two months ago (probably less), there were people hoping that Gasol would just go ahead and retire. After all of these years, it still amazes me to see the shifting tides on LG.

Oh, sure. However, when we signed Drummond, there was a sense (quite justified) that Gasol had not filled the role that the team envisioned, and we knew that there were going to be issues with Gasol's playing time. I find it interesting to see Gasol being viewed as the savior at center (which is an exaggeration, I know).

Similar dynamic with Danny Green. Danny's less washed than Marc, but you would've thought he was stealing money out of fans' pockets the way they brought up his salary (which was necessary ballast to match contracts in the Schröder trade).

I don't see how it works offensively. AD and Lebron are downhill scorers - they need space to get to the rim where they're most dangerous. Turning them into jump shooters is a win for the opposition. Drummond on a team with Steph and Klay makes some sense on offense, but he does nothing but gum up the works for the Lakers as currently constructed outside of the occasional offensive rebound. If he's on the court with Lebron, AD, and Schröder and getting iso possessions, something has gone wrong. He's not even a good finisher at the rim like JaVale and Dwight while being a worse FT shooter than either.

If anything Drummond should come off the bench to anchor the defense in second units while getting more iso touches. Harrell's a better offensive player than Drummond, but if Vogel refuses to recognize that the Harrell/Morris frontcourt hemorrhages points, then Trezz needs to be the guy collecting DNPs in the playoffs.

if Marc shoots 40% from the 3, he plays, simple as that.
