All in their primes:

Kareem - 5
Lebron - 4
Kobe - 3
Jordan - 2
Magic - 1

This is my all-time team. Can anyone come up with another lineup that can take them? And, none of this "Wilt can play PG, Hakeem at SG, Russell at SF, Shaq at PF" kinda stuff. Like, legitimate positions they actually played in/logged in minutes at.

Kareem obviously is the 5.
Lebron came in as a 3 but has been a 3/4 his whole career.
Kobe is a little undersized to be a 3 (i guess) but him and MJ can swap the 2/3 spots whole damn game and either/or could obviously man the 2/3 spots.
Magic would be a SF/PF now but he historically played 1 his whole career.

The amount of interchangeability would be absolutely insane.

Kobe - 1/2/3
Magic - 1/2/3/4/5
Jordan - 1/2/3
Lebron - 1/2/3/4/5
Kareem - 5

Eh. Lebron isn't a 4, and Kobe isn't a 3. But then you challenge us to name players at "legitimate positions." You've got four players who need the ball in their hands. It's one thing to say that those are the best five players of all time, but it's another thing to say that this would be the best lineup

Suppose we went with Wilt, Duncan, Bird, West, and Curry. I just picked those players off the top of my head. You might rate all of those guys lower than your top five, but at least these five are all playing in their natural positions. The lineup also has balance, in that it has a real 4 and several players who can play off the ball. Your lineup would get killed in the paint and outside the three point line.

(1) I find it a little odd that you are telling other people they can't scramble positions, when you are doing that by putting Kobe at SF when he was really a shooting guard and Lebron at PF when he is really a SF.

(2) Your team seems just to pick the best guy at each position without regard to how they fit together. So I don't really see your selection as the best team, but as the best guys at their individual positions.

(3) In any case, I could take some of your 5 and switch out some of them with other players, such as Bird or Duncan, and I think they would be just as good if not better. So I don't necessarily think yours is the ultimate starting 5, though of course it is very good.

(4) If you are saying another starting 5 couldn't use any of the 5 guys you picked, I can think of some combinations of guys who might not be as good individually on paper but might work better or work just as well on the court.

So ...

My top 5 of all time based on the position they mostly played (based on their individual ability rather than how I think they would work as a team):

Magic, Jordan, Lebron, Duncan, Kareem

Here is one combination of 5 different guys, who, while perhaps not as good individually, I think might fit together better as a team than your collection of ball-dominant players who aren’t great shooters and thus beat them:

Hakeem, Duncan, Bird, Curry, Oscar

Ahh.... are we playing this game based on how they called the game in the 80's/90's or the pussyfication of the league now?

Well, not only how the game is called, but how it is played.

If we saying they play in Showtime era, where the average team might only take 2 three pointers the entire game, Curry will be less valuable than he is in the modern era.

Conversely, if we are using the amazing time machine, do we assume Magic grew up knowing how important the 3-pointer would become and thus he's much better at it?

There are a lot of wrinkles like that if you are thinking about how guys will actually play together on the court. It's more complicated than just naming 5 great players.

With a lineup that big and interchangeable even a guy like Steph would be exposed.

These are all guys who were the best players on championship teams.

And it’s tough thinking of 5 other guys that could challenge them. Center position is the easiest. There’s Wilt, Shaq, Hakeem.
But every other position is rough. Bird would probably struggle with the length and athleticism of your 5. I think Duncan or Garnett at the 4 could hold their own. Dirk was a beast that 1 championship year too. Giannis is a beast too.

I think it’s safe to say Wade is the 3rd best SG all time. Could prolly get away with running him at the 1.

Best I can do is
PG- Wade
SG- Kawhi
SF- Durant
PF- Garnett/Duncan
C- Wilt/Giannis

Wade at 6’4” is obviously the weak link. I could throw a big Guard in there instead but they wouldn’t be the overall player prime Wade was.

Good luck stopping this team in transition and getting through that defense.

Just for the fun of it, assuming it's the soft 'play to draw fouls and reward flopping' league:

CP3
Trae
Harden
Luka
Embiid?

Basically playing 8 on 5 all day with refs on their side

You named all Lakers, except Jordan. Why not include James Worthy or Elgin Baylor and remove Jordan? Lakers have enough all time talent to beat created all time NBA talent.

No one could beat a team with Jordan and Kobe on it - they're 1-2 at the same position. There's simply no one in history that even approaches MJ or Kobe at the 2 guard.

But if the rules are that Kobe and Jordan could not be on the same team, then you can construct many iterations of teams that would be competitive. For example:

Kareem - 5
Duncan - 4
Lebron - 3
Jordan - 2
Magic - 1

vs

Wilt - 5
Garnet - 4
Bird - 3
Kobe - 2
Oscar - 1

That's a pickem game.

There are many iterations of a competitive matchup you can form as long as you stick to the rule that Kobe and Jordan can not be on the same team.

If you are making this thread, you have to choose either Kobe or MJ as your shooting guard. Neither are legit. SF's. Otherwise...

Everyone knows Hulk is a 5 and Thor is a 4. Spidey is a 2/3. Cap and Stark battle for who runs the point.
