Rising to the Occasion... This one had loss written all over it, but the Laker role players had other ideas in mind.

L.A. added a couple more injured to their bench with Reaves and Rondo sitting tonight. As a result, we had some new combinations on the floor.

The game didn't really begin until Melo checked in midway through the first quarter. Both teams had about a field goal each up until that point. Then things loosened up.

The Lakers caught a break when Jimmy Butler couldn’t return for the second half after an ankle twist.

L.A. trailed by 2 at the half, but fell behind as Bam picked up his scoring in the third and the Laker guards struggled with defending back cuts. Still, Russ banked in a three at the end of the third and the Lakers were down by just 4 heading into the fourth.

They’d give up a 12-0 run early in the fourth. They didn’t give in. Down 9 with 4:35 left, they rallied. Big shots by Malik Monk and several by Russ down the stretch, including pull-up with 50 seconds left and a fade with 27 on a two-for-one sequence.

The Lakers had a chance to win it in regulation, but Russ iso’d and settled for a three. This seems to be our go-to play at the end of games currently. And on to overtime with that.

Here, the Lakers tried desperately to give this game away on multiple occasions, but Monk would hit a three and a big-stepping fade to beat the shotclock. On the other end, he was also mixing it up.

Melo had several key miscues in overtime (a travel, a 5-second inbounds violation and missing an important freethrow). The Heat did some of the same, missing several freethrows themselves and some big shots.

Herro missed a hero-ball like chuck with 6.5 seconds left from the sideline (you could see that one coming). After Melo choked one of the FTs, the Heat ran an elevator screen to free up Herro, this time for a wide open three, and again he couldn’t convert one of his best looks of the night.

The Lakers hung on to win 120-117. They are 3-0 in overtime.

Davis -- -- He nearly had a tip in at the buzzer that could have won it. He also had a late reaction to an elevator screen to challenge Herro at the end of OT. You could see him hesitate, uncertain, and that was enough time to get a good look. If he goes when he initially thought he should, he eats that up and stalls the play. He held the defense together tonight considering all the guys missing. We had him on Butler quite a bit early on as we don’t have the size on the wing to defend him with those injuries. Butler left with a sprained ankle early on so that helped. Bam also had three fouls early in the half. In the third quarter, Bam dominated both scoring wise and as a passer. Very little response from AD during that stretch. The Heat were doubling and loading up strong side at times, this meant moving the ball and needing our shooters to step up. Some good passes by AD there (we could still execute with more purpose). One of the quietly annoying stats of the night, AD shooting just 3-4 from the line. Come on. He was not getting much love from the refs. Tripped, shoved, hit in the face and no calls on any of that early on. It resulted in turnovers and odd man advantages the other way for scores, as well. Certainly, he could have played more physical offensively (rolling instead of popping, battling for low position instead of getting walked out to the perimeter). But his number should have been more efficient. The Stats: He scored 24 points on 10-23 shooting (1-2 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 13 boards (5 offensive), 4 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 3 fouls in 45 minutes. He was a -4.

Westbrook -- -- Great close in regulation, scoring on a big drive with 2:41 left, hitting a pull-up with 50 seconds left and then a fade with 27 seconds left. So I really wish he didn’t settle for a three on that final possession of regulation. Get your man backing up with your speed and make it an easier one. Again, nearly a quadruple-double from Russ with the turnovers. Some big ones, but give him more credit in this one. He was key to the Lakers closing. We just need to get better at playing to our strengths more often. I liked the horns set options we ran with Russ up top and AD and Melo at the elbows. He’s able to find Melo for pick and pops or AD rolling for lobs. Defensively, some sketchy rotations at times, not fully committing to the schemes in the first half and that led to some breakdowns. It was an instant problem when he allowed his man to get middle, not trying to ice the two-man sequences on the sideline. Vogel said he challenged his guys to defend better in the second half and I think we had fewer of those obvious scheme breakdowns and moments of unfocused execution. It just takes one guy to have a “What are you doing?” moment defensively against a smart team to see the rest of the D break down. Anyway, it’s still a work in progress, but it was very good to see Russ have some positive possessions where he imposed his will on the opponent. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 10-22 shooting (3-7 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 12 boards, 14 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 8 turnovers and 5 foul sin 43 minutes. He was a +10.

Bradley -- -- He hit three threes in the first quarter, four in the first half in total on his way to 14 points. He got fouled with no call on his first attempt in this game and that got him a little fired up, I think. Good to get some of that scoring punch from him as Melo wasn’t his usual self at Staples tonight. We needed guys to bring it. Bradley would bank in his fifth three with 3 minutes left. I’ll take it. Fans pick on Pelinka quite a bit for not bringing back AC (grrrrr) or making that big Russ trade even, but he got 17 points from Bradley as a waiver pick up and 27 from Monk as a minimum deal, not to mention Melo. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 6-12 shooting (5-8 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +0.

Bazemore -- -- Really sloppy defensive work early in the fourth quarter, switching unnecessarily, then not recovering to his man when he relocated and giving up a three. That forced a timeout by Vogel as the Lakers trailed by 2. Next time down he fouled Tucker unnecessarily on the perimeter to give up FTs and trail by 4. This started the 12-0 Heat run in the fourth. I was happy to see him sit and not return in this one. To be fair, we are making him our SF and even ran him at PF briefly tonight. This isn’t playing to our strengths, but Baze is seeing some pressure from others on our bench right now. He needs to respond. His one make tonight was a high arching midrange shot over a defender to just beat the shotclock. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -6.

Jordan -- -- Laker offense picked up after he sat in the first quarter. Just no spacing and flow. Defensively, it was hit and miss, but when he was decisive in the rotations they worked it out. Bam wasn't getting it done early from the perimeter so DJ could plug the paint and grab boards. He was a +0 during his minutes. As depleted as we are, those are important minutes, especially with Dwight’s foul troubles. The Stats: He had 1 point on 1-2 shooting from the line to go with 5 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a +0.

Anthony -- -- He hit a three on his first touch, but struggled a bit at times in this one. That would be his only three, although he’d hit a two with his toe on that three line. He and Martin picked up double techs. Melo went to work on him a little, but we didn’t give him the ball enough in that match-up. It was an instant double if we wanted it. We generally did a poor job setting him up in this game. Losing another playmaker and his buddy, Reaves, probably hurt the mojo. There were a lot of bad plays, though, he let PJ Tucker get that putback jam with 23.5 seconds left. He had a big travel in OT, a 5-second inbounds violation in the final seconds of OT and a big missed FT. Not as sharp defensively on rotations, either. Still, I think the overall defensive game the past several has been strong enough that we are able to thrive at times when he’s out there, especially when the shot is falling. You could see the game change for us in the first half as soon as he came in. He led the team in +/- tonight despite all the issues. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-12 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +13.

Howard -- -- The crowd and team fed off Dwight’s energy on the offensive glass early. Maybe too much energy going on. He’d foul out quickly into the fourth quarter. I think they said it was the fastest foul out since Andrew Bynum pulled one off like this. Glad he avoided a tech tonight. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting from the line to go with 3 boards, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 6 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a +5.

Monk -- -- Now is the time he really needs to step up. The minutes are available. The opportunity is there with all our injuries. And if memory serves, he has had some great games against Miami. Look it up, but I’m pretty sure he’s had some huge ones against the Heat. We were looking for him and Bradley to run the backup point tonight with no Rondo. Some good possession for Monk early on. He was under control and working himself into the midrange for scores or finding AD. I like the speed he played at. It was under control and he let the plays develop instead of getting caught doing something stupid, which we have a lot of from others right now. That may have helped him get into a rhythm early, but he saved his best plays for crunch time. He sank a huge three with 3:51 left to cut it to 4 and force a timeout. He’d drive and earn some FTs with 1:23 left. With 4 minutes left in OT, he drained a three. And then he pulled one out of nowhere, a big-stepping, awkward fading one-hander going to his left to just beat the shotclock. We needed someone to step up tonight and he delivered 27 off the bench. “This is going to continue to build his confidence,” AD said afterward. Defensively, he had some moments in this game. Some key challenges on players to get stops. Getting him to having disruptive moments defensively and doing it with consistency and within the system is the challenge this season. When we had some early issues tonight, we adjusted and tightened it up. Nice to see. The Stats: He scored 27 on 10-13 shooting (4-7 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +12.

Ellington -- -- He hit 3-4 from behind the arc in the first half. One did bank in from the baseline. I mean, we had three banked threes by guys tonight. That had to just kill the Heat. Decent minutes from Ellington, we had notable issues defensively at times, but he’d end up giving us some needed floor spacing. His quick trigger as we moved the ball off double teams was much needed for the offense as the Heat want to pack the paint and take away our post players, as well. On one double of AD in the second half, we had a switch with Bam on Ellington. Ellington relocated while Bam ball watched and that led to an easy pass from AD for the three. Defensively, getting picked on a little on cuts along with our other guards what probably the most notable breakdown. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 4-6 shooting from three to go with 2 assists and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a -15.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Certainly a lot here you could choose, but the Lakers didn’t fold in the fourth when under pressure. After a bad breakdown by Bazemore defensively to give up a three and the lead, Vogel called a timeout with 8:20 left. Dwight just fouled out, the team needed to lock in. Out of that timeout, we had AD miss a jumper, then Bazemore fouled on the perimeter to give up more FTs. An AD charge on an attack on the other end, the Lakers then fouled on a three and the Lakers were in trouble -- a 12-0 Miami run. The Lakers chipped away at that lead, pulling out a 2-point lead with 27 seconds left. Credit Russ with a strong stretch in the last two minutes. They’d give up a putback jam, hold on for a long miss and send it to overtime where the Lakers would win. Recovering from that fourth-quarter run by the Heat showed some fight this team hasn’t displayed a lot of against bad teams let alone, excellent ones like the Heat.

Key Substitution: Well, Malik Monk, crushed it. The 27 on 10-13 off the bench, clearly player of the game in this one. But on a smaller scale, also sitting Bazemore in the fourth when we were faltering (and not bringing him back). That was a key. He got enough defense from our offensive players that made the team a tough out tonight.

Key Stats: A lot of turnovers again in this one. I’m not sure how many lob passes the Heat intercepted, but it seemed like just about most. The Lakers had 22 turnovers. How do you overcome that? Make 8 more threes than the Heat while shooting 47%.

Why in the heck is our last play of the game to have the worst 3 point shooting guard in league take a 3 point shot? WestBrook always try’s to be the hero and takes bad shot after bad shot in the critical moments of the game. He does this every close game. Again we should have gone to Melo one on one or ran a real play to get a good look for someone that can actually shoot. We didn’t deserve to win with all our bone head plays down the stretch.

Thanks DB!

I figured the fellas were cooked when they fell down 9 in the 4th and less than 5 minutes to go. Nice run by them. Russ had some big moments then, including getting the offensive foul on Bam. Was completely befuddled by him taking a 3 at the end...that's just being stubborn and boneheaded as it looked to me like he coulda drived to the hoop. It's like he has this vision in his head of hitting a big 3 to win so he can yell "see! I can do it!" instead of just going to his best shot, which is a drive.

OT was incredibly up and down. But, they won one they probably should not have, which is fine considering they shoulda won those Thunder games.

Onto the next. Hopefully the squad can get healthier. Amazing how the injury bug has hit so many of the young guys (Reaves, Nunn, THT).

We got some defense again, and that's why we were able to make a game out of this. No business winning games like this with Bron out, but we came with a purpose right from the start. A real effort and commitment on D. You can see it all 1st Q. Our offense couldn't buy a shot. Baze missed like 4 wide open looks (with I think no defender even close to him). Just a slow start.

But in the end, they really defended and then we were strong on the glass in that 1st Q. Set the tone for the game, I felt. We've become a much more reliable defensive team that plays at a high pace. That's all I'd call us right now. Nothing outstanding on O, nothing outstanding on D. Reliable D team with some elite 1 on 1 players.

Yesterday, was Monk who stepped up. Bradley as well. Avery is not a great 3 point shooter, but yesterday he hit a lot of 3s on catch and shoots. Melo was solid, and continues to defend. Monk's shot were at a high degree of difficulty though.

Got to figure out those DAJ minutes. Not sure he should be getting them. And we need Bron back to get out offense a little more higher IQ/more efficient. Those AD/Melo lineups are starting to look really good. Howard/AD looks solid too. Howard/Melo also solid.

I really feel when Bron comes back, the starter he needs to replace is DAJ. Bradley has been very solid. Especially in what he does on D. Baze makes mistakes and can't buy a basket sometimes, but he has an assignment that I can't see Bron taking. With the open paint for Westbrook, I feel it's the right move to make to get Bron in there for DAJ.

Thanks DB.

It was great seeing our role players step up and make a difference.
Of course Monk's 27 points were huge. Ellington's 3-4 from behind the arc and Bradley's 4 1st half treys were tremendous boosts that kept us in the game early.
Their efforts allowed the Lakers to get build confidence and get into a rhythm.

SWEET, much needed win over a quality opponent.

That was the Vogel team we have grown to love. Definitely some defensive lapses but it was the first game where they started to feel like they were on a string.

Show us once and we expect it all of the time.

Building block game for this team

The depth of this roster brought together by Rob was on display

Westbrook’s mental toughness is to admire. However, is he settling for 3s (Hero Ball???) because he can’t get by his man??? Maybe if there “standby” offensive sets where there is far greater motion to limit defenses of loading up on the other players since opposing teams will be happy to let Russ shoot a 3

Caruso’s absence is definitely noted. One could ask (matching salaries) would you give up to have him on this roster. Congrats on his success in Chicago where Zo and Caruso are providing the Bulls with a defensive mentality
Congrats to Kuz, Harrell and KCP with their current success with the Wizards where they can play free and easy without the deep scrutiny that comes with the high expectations (Ring or Bust) when playing for the Lakers (with LBJ and AD)

Getting Bradley, discovering Reeves (who provides more offensive skills than Caruso) and having Melo playing better D than expected hopefully will exceed all expectations by the end of the season

Getting THT and Ariza will definitely bring a much higher defensive pressure

Getting Dwight brings great energy and physicality (albeit with a lot of fouls that he can give given the minutes he is playing. Jordan is there to eat up minutes (so that AD doesn’t have to) and take over when Dwight gets into foul trouble. If players such as Steven Adams to Rudy Gobert can be successful - so can Jordan (in limited minutes and against certain teams)

Vogel’s strength of developing defensive schemes with players that are individually great defensively is starting to show up

Of all 5 guys on the court at that time, we literally ended up shooting the worst possible percentage shot available to anyone. Just not smart.

Actually... a worse play would have been AD trying to shoot a three on iso. Lol. I guess we already found out that doesn't work.

It's killing me.

We go iso ball for low percentage shot quality. On the other end of the table, Spo runs an elevator screen to free up a wide open look for his team at the end of the game.

We did not deserve the W, but it will make up for one of those Grizzlies Ls.

^ Correction, we beat the Grizzles, it’s the OKC Thunder we lost to this season and it was twice without LeBron, at the very least if LeBron plays in both Thunder games we split and our record right now is 8-4 instead of 7-5.

Thanks DB! Even though it may not be deserving I'll take the win. Especially with all the injuries. Hopefully, with the reserves getting more time, we can see more confidence from them. And find out who we can and cannot count on later on in the season.
