Losing Is A Disease…Attacking One But Infecting All... The montage about losing from the movie The Natural fits right about now.

I’m reminded of those preseason games where the team wasn’t close to winning games. We’re right back where we started from.

After going 0-10 from three in the first quarter of this one (again!), the Lakers then entered the bad-offense-creates-bad-defense phase of their game and fell back by 23 in the second quarter.

The Lakers would cut it to 14 after KAT picked up his third foul of the half. The effort on D would fade, however, and the TWolves would push the lead back to 21 at the half.

The Lakers would pick up another foul on KAT early in the third and cut the lead back down to 16 to force a timeout. When Westbrook finally made a three, the Lakers cut the lead to 9 points.

The TWolves would edge that lead up, but an 11-4 run to end the third quarter had the Lakers down by just 9 again.

D.J. Augustin helped spark the Lakers to trail by just 4 before a series of defensive breakdowns would force Vogel to call a timeout down 10 again. That was as close as the Lakers would get. Getting KAT into foul trouble gave them a chance in this game, but once he returned the Lakers faded into the night, losing 124-104.

LeBron -- -- Just 8 points on a poor 3-12 shooting in the first half. Defensively, he was the reason we were in this game as he stood in to draw two charges on KAT and get him into foul trouble. That should have made a big impact as KAT had clocked just 15 minutes after three quarters. That’ gives you a chance on the road with as bad as we’ve been. LeBron wasn’t great in this one, but he’d draw a third charge stepping in front of another drive, so that part of his D was making a difference. Funny seeing Bron called for a touch foul on a Pat Bev drive, but they’re not calling that both ways for him, that’s for sure. The cheap fouls he got in this one also had him in foul trouble during that fourth quarter. His 32-game string of 20+ points ended. Last time was in Minny, as well. Rough night. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 8-21 shooting (1-8 from three, 2-5 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 5 turnovers and 5 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a -19.

Westbrook -- -- There was a Russ turnover near the end of the first half where the defender sagged off him by about 15 feet and Russ forced the pass into LeBron anyway for a turnover. Hey, when you are denting the rim with jumpers anyone would turn into a pretty good defensive team when you can then take away your team’s primary result. If only we knew this before we traded for him. It’s not like we did this to Harden in the playoffs. The crowd was loving his misses, including an open corner three he airballed late in the game. He’d get some layups and FTs. Defensively, a lot of standing around and late reactions that kept our D loose. Worthy talked about the lack of connection with this team. I mentioned it previously, I think a lot of this is the lack of leadership from Russ. If AD was healthy, you’d have his voice in there. But since he’s injured, you know he’s not talking. We have no Rondo voice. No Dudley. No Caruso. The locker room blows for this team and you see it on the floor. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 5-12 shooting (1-4 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 5 assists, 2 steals, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -1.

Monk -- -- He missed all three of his attempts from three in the first half. His only bucket was a layup on an inbounds. He was missing some of his open shots, but also some credit to Pat Bev for blocking a couple threes and some effort there. He had the Pat Bev assignment defensively at times. You can’t give up some easy drives like he did. That made him a bit of a negative factor in this one. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-12 shooting (2-9 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -8.

Reaves -- -- Just a 7-minute stint in the first half. The team was only a -2, but we didn’t bring him back in the first half. He’d work the two-man game with Dwight for a pull-up at the FT line for his one score in the half. He hit a three and dunk in transition in the second half. We needed his D on the floor. It was too easy when anyone else was guarding his assignments. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and no fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +0.

Howard -- -- Back after being out for personal reasons, we needed Dwight’s size against KAT who can post up our smalls. Luckily, the KAT foul trouble limited that for chunks of this game. Dwight struggled to finish or look like a finisher in this one. Father Time catching up to him the past couple years. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-2 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards (4 offensive), 1 assist, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -5.

Anthony -- -- He led the team with 13 points on 5-11 shooting in 16 minutes. That’s a lot of shots in a short amount of time, but we needed his offense. Unfortunately, the three-ball problems extended to him, as well, as he missed all four attempts in the first half. He’d lead the bench in scoring, but the 1-7 from three was painful. He’s supposedly been pretty good in the locker room for the Lakers. We really need more of that from our vets right now to pull out of the tail spin. Not sure it’s going to happen. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-15 shooting (1-7 from three, 3-5 from the line) to go with 3 offensive boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -13.

Horton-Tucker -- -- After playing a bit in the first half with little success (he scored on a tough floater), he re-aggravated an ankle sprain and was done for the night. He missed all of his looks (good ones) from three. That, of course, makes it near impossible to play him with Westbrook. Which we mentioned in preseason would be a big challenge with this roster and where our money is spent. That’s $53 million tied up in two guards who can’t shoot. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a -14.

Augustin -- -- He’d hit a three to end the third quarter, then score on a baseline step-back to open the fourth and the Lakers would trail by just 7. He’d spin away from the D and score a layup a minute later and we’d be down by 4. He nearly had the lead cut to 3 but they erased the three, calling Bron for a moving screen. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-4 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and no fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -3.

Bradley -- -- Once again, we got to the break-in-case-of-emergency subs. In his 4 minutes of the first half, the team went -10. In the third he came in late in the quarter and promptly airballed a wide open corner three by a few feet. A couple nice plays after that, including a baseline cut off ball for a layup. He’d also blindside the post for a steal and take it for an uncontested layup. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -11.

Johnson -- -- He came in with 4 minutes into the second quarter for just a 2-minute stint. As a result, he led the team in the first half with the -1. He came in late in the third for Bron and swished a corner three on a kickout, then set up Augustin for a three at the buzzer to help end the quarter on an 11-4 run. Good little stretch there. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-1 shooting from three to go with 1 assist and 1 foul in 7 minutes. He was a +2.

Gabriel -- -- A bit of a garbage man role tonight. He’d get some layups and FTs as a result. We need guys doing that, so he got minutes. His main flaw in my opinion is he’s not that strong, so you can attack and overpower him to erase that length. He’s got a bit of gangly athleticism that also limits him some. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-6 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal and 3 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -9.

Ellington -- -- He came in with a minute left in the first quarter. We’ve gone 1-33 in threes in the first quarters. I’m not sure if we need to think about bringing him in sooner if Monk is showing signs of disappearing, just because it’s probably not going to make a difference. Also, we need to give Monk big minutes to entice him to return in the offseason. Ellington would get our first three to start the second quarter. He’d knock down the Lakers next three 4 minutes into the second quarter. No one else would make another three in the first half as we finished 2-21. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting from three to go with 3 boards, 2 assists and no fouls in 18 minutes. He was a -19.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Maybe the pregame shootaround? This team cannot hit a shot in the first quarter. “I thought the effort was a lot better in the first quarter than the last two,” he said. He mentioned LeBron’s leadership, but said, “We just couldn’t put the ball in the basket.”

Key Substitution: I’m going to go with not bringing Reaves back in for more minutes in the first half. We were destroyed without his defense and effort out there. Yes, he’s been poor offensively, but at least that doesn’t impact his defensive effort like it seems with most everyone else. Honestly, though, the substitutions don’t really matter at this point. The team is in a bigger funk than solved by the right combo of players.

Key Stats: The Lakers were 1-23 on threes the last two games in the first quarter. Tonight, 0-10. How can you shoot 1-33 from three, lol? Vogel said the team went 4-23 on open threes in this one. You need to make about 5 or 6 more of those if you are a league average shooting team on open threes. The team shot 10-45 from three. We shouldn’t be shooting that many, but also when guys are just guarding the paint and letting you shoot those, then you need to make those open threes.

Yup. I think I posted that video earlier in the season.

Thanks again for the summary DB. Seriously humbling stretch of basketball for this team. Depressing as a fan.

DB - your patience and steadfastness is to be totally complimented

In the Championship Year, the “Go To” offensive play is the LBJ/AD’s P&Rs. This Laker team’s only dependable offensive scheme is LBJ bringing up the ball and scoring

Outside of LBJ (at this time), team has no closers (Melo is not consistent and gives up more points than he makes)

When Westbrook’s Basketball IQ is like a first/second year player, instead of a HOFer, this team display the characteristics of a young and inexperienced team

If Nunn can produce HALF the stats that Kyrie is producing, that would be amazing. (Hahahahaha)

Is it realistic to expect Monk, Reeves, Johnson and THT to compensate for Westbrook’s inabilities. It would be great, but these players didn’t expect to play the heavy MPG that they are now playing and expected to play at a very high level

Pat Bev is a clown but he's right: the lakers are playing like trash these last 3 games.

They deserve to be humiliated given their effort recently.

LA Times accurately assesses this Laker team

"They can’t find the right starting lineup.
They can’t stay healthy.
They can’t find the right style of play.
They can’t find the necessary effort, urgency or intensity.
They can’t score and they can’t defend.

And, still somehow, they can’t even find rock bottom.
Someday, they’ll run out of fight.
Someday, they won’t find the rope to escape some of these holes.
And someday, these games will be every bit as embarrassing as they’ve been starting out."

Lakers have played like trash this season with some sprinkles of
good basketball here and there.

I probably mentioned it earlier in the season, but, get use to the embarrassment because this will be painful a while longer.

Thanks DB, your recaps are always spot on.

Thanks again DB! Really appreciate your T&R's even in this least watchable Laker season.

For this squad, never have so many done so little with so much.

Thanks DB! I don't know how you stomach these.

One thing is for sure, if Lebron struggles, no one is going to save him. The talent deficit is shocking, even against mediocre teams.

True but the last 3 games are on a different level.

The Lakers look lifeless. When they played like trash earlier, they lost many times due to either being outclassed by the opponent or making a crucial mistake late in game.

The last 3 games the lakers have played like they've accepted a loss from tipoff. It's as if they've already had their souls snatched before warmups.

Maybe the "saving grace" is that this team will lose 2 more games than the Trailblazers and 3 more games than the Spurs.

It would be too much for this team to lose more than 6 games than the Kings - maybe not!!

It is not easy. Been a fan since the 70s. It's definitely feeling more of a burden than I hobby/entertainment these past couple months. They have gone so backwards, it's crazy.

As many have mentioned, it is really not an enjoyable season to watch. Reaves is really one of the few things worth watching. Seeing a rookie learn and get better can be enjoyable despite all the other stuff. That's why those Luke Walton years were a bit more palatable. It feels like THT kind of hit a wall this season (better roster construction would also help him). I kind of like watching Monk and looking for improvements, but it's not the same since he hasn't been coming up in our system.

I'm trying not to take for granted what LeBron is doing. It is pretty amazing. But I think Laker fans also might get just as much enjoyment, if not more, if they saw Caruso hitting the floor 4 or 5 times a game and busting his ass. Instead we got Westbrook killing the fans' basketball souls on a nightly basis and a team that's no longer competitive for long stretches.

Really worried also about some of the basketball minds making decisions. They need some new blood to mix things up. No more former Laker retreads. A better connection between the coaches and the front office (and that's more on the front office, than the coaching right now). Hopefully, they can turn Westbrook into useful parts, but it's highly questionable that they'd take on contract lengths that are probably required.

It's been a rough ride, no doubt. This is probably my least favorite Lakers season ever (I'm in my 30s).

At this point I enjoy and appreciate LG.net . This season has been utterly indescribable. I, too, have been a Lakers fan since i was a kid in the 70s. I went to the Showtime era championship rallies in the 80s. I'm always an optimist so there's always the possibility of some dramatic turnaround but in all likelihood... I just...there aren't even words for this season.

Having a community to commiserate with helps ease the pain.

Imagine that Westbrick is worse than Smush Parker - lol!!

Only "Saving Grace" is that this team is not the worse. At this time, they are the 7th worst Laker team in history
