I added the poster dunk from tonight. Buddy can’t do that . _________________ “God knew they couldn’t be on this Earth without each other. He had to bring them home to heaven together.”

Way too early to talk about this but curious do we have our full MLE next year or just the MMLE (taxpayer MLE) that we gave Nunn? So what’s the best case for Monk, 2 years MMLE with a player opt out after year 1?
He’s 23 and ha shown flashes. Still concerned about the D, but it’s nice to see he’s fitting in well on offense. |

Every team without cap space has the full MLE as long as they don’t breach the cap apron after they use it (ie hardcap).
Deng’s 5m dead cap hit comes off next offseason, but with just Russ (opts in), Bron, AD and THT we’re already at 140m for just those 4 on a projected salary cap of 119m. Luxury taxes kick in at 145m, so if we exercise our 1.6m team option on Reaves (we’d be idiots not to) and Nunn opts into his 5.3m player option, then we’re already in the tax with just 6 players in the roster.
The cap apron is projected to be 151.4m. So with the aforementioned 6 players, we would have roughly 4.5m in wiggle before we hit the hard cap threshold. So the use of the projected fMLE of 10.1m is out! There is absolutely no way we use that to trigger the hardcap unless Russ opts our if player option and takes a generous hometown discount.
The mMLE will be projected at 6.2m and more importantly does not trigger the hard cap, so that will be our only resource to use on retaining Monk.
FYI: the use of the projected 3.9m BAE is also out, cause it would trigger the hard cap. So just assume our true spending potential next summer is 6.2m on any of our free agents. Recall Dwight, Rondo, Baze, Ellington, Trev, Av are all previous Lakers that re-upped here, but we did not gain any early/full bird rights with these players since they all joined other teams in the interim before reupping with us this past summer. _________________ Not familiar with the salary cap/CBA rules & how it impacts our Lakers?

Excellent timing for this post as Buddy goes 7-11 from 3 tonight and is averaging over 44% from 3 on 10+ attempts per game. His PPG is now at 18.3.
Monk is now at 38% on 5 attempts a game. |

Hield is the better player. But as far as bang for the buck it's Monk by a mile. |

If basketball was as easy as who has the best stats. Morey would have 10 championships. Monk numbers look good, but I wouldnt consider him a +player much less a starter. At best he is a situational player. |

There's a premium on 3pt shot making ability in the league. And not all 40% 3pt shooters are created equal. AC shot 40% last year but nobody considers him an elite shooter because he did it mostly in catch and shoot situations and at low volume.
There's a reason why guys like Joe Harris, Bertans and Robinson are getting paid 15-18M while none of them ever averaged more than 16ppg. These type of shooters don't grow on trees. Hield was coming off a 42.7 3pt% and 20.7ppg season when he signed his 20M+ contract.
Hield is a 40.6% 3pt shooter for his career on 7.4 attempts. Can shoot it from anywhere, off the dribble, off screens, you name it. Monk on the other hand has averaged 40% once in his career. The jury is still out if last year was just a fluke or if he really made a huge leap.
Monk also has a career -2.6 BPM. That's end of the bench type impact. His career high was last season at -1.9 BPM which is still replacement level. _________________ Plan A - Schroder/Hield/Lebron/AD/Gasol

Lol, you say that as if Malik is a twelve year grizzled vet. He shot 40% from three after not doing it his rookie and sophmore season. Normal growth for a youngster is normal.
~~~
I chose Malik over Buddy because I see more defensive upside. Even though neither one can play solid D, Monk is younger and more malleable to improve with proper guidance (which we offer).
For instance, last night vs. the Rockets he wasn't on his man who got a pass at the top of the 3P line. Reaves (mistakenly) left Gordon at the elbow three spot to rotate over as Malik was trying to recover. We ended up with two young defenders guarding a lesser shooter and left Gordan alone who received the pass and made the open shot with ease.
Malik should've been on his man so Austin would not feel he needed to rotate, and once Malik saw Austin hustling over he had time to realize Gordan was open to rotate over there. Mental mistakes like that our coaches and vets will help him with.
I also like Malik's attack-the-basket skill set more than Buddy because of superior athleticism and finishing abilities. He's also a decent play maker from what little I've seen in him. |
Folks are confusing this narrative up.
AC could just as easily have been here with Russ if the FO planned it the right way with THT given a 3yr deal in 2019 with cap space and/or ownership willing to open up the bag to pay up in taxes to retain both THT & AC this past summer with Russ in the fold.
To know you’ll be capped out with just 3 max players/Deng’s dead cap hit, roughly 10m in wiggle till you hit the tax threshold and still pulling off the trade to suddenly stop spending was a wild move to me if you’re all about banner #18.
The only real loss between a Buddy deal vs a Russ deal is Kcp (and possibly #39 via King’s 2nd)…that’s it. We were rumored to be parting with Kuz/Trez/#22 in both deals. _________________ Not familiar with the salary cap/CBA rules & how it impacts our Lakers?
Westbrook will end up winning us games late in the year.. BOOK IT
Hield is a great role player but he doesnt have the capability to go and win a game if LBJ goes down or Davis.
Westbrook although he has his faults.. He still can change the dynamic of a game when needed |
I will take 3 years of Buddy over 1 year of Monk. Don't forget that we could have had them both (along with our 1st ,KCP, and AC) if we played our cards right. We would have had a deeper roster with SUPERIOR perimeter D while also having FLEXIBILITY (to make a move if needed). |
Let's be honest Buddy is overpaid by a lot. He does one thing shoot 3s. He has yet to translate anything to winning. With AD/LBJ he would be lethal, but at the same time I haven't really seen him play any D. At the time of the rumored trade I wasn't aware of his salary. I thought it was closer to 12-15M. Too much money for his limited skill set. |
Monk is a question mark. He has a good game and follows it with a bad game. It's yet to be determined what his place in the league is. That's why he was available for the minimum. He may turn into something or he may not.
Buddy is definitely a flawed player but he shoots at a elite level. He's having a bad start to this season. So if you're going to judge him totally by just the last 20 games he doesn't look very good. |
