PG LeBron + 2 SG (KCP & DG) = Ring. So why does the FO keep going away from that?

Lakers won the championship when LeBron was our PG with 3&D guys at the wing in Pope and Green.

After that, we signed/traded for players that would essentially take the ball off LeBron’s hands: Schröder and then Westbrook, while giving up the 3&D.

Why aren’t Lakers letting LeBron be the PG and just sign 2 players in the backcourt who can defend and shoot?

Playing the 1 fulltime wears down LeBron - that's why they went after Schroeder and Russ the past 2 off seasons.

Funny thing is that now LeBron has to work even harder than before, because he's playing with players that can't defend nor shoot (or do anything else in the case of Westbrook).

NGL, I was estatic when we traded Danny for Schroeder because he was going to bolster our bench as a 6th man, instead we made him a starter, smh.

OP, you are leaving out some key, very specific supporting roles in your post aside from KCP and DG.

On paper, there are at least some names that could in theory take on those roles you bring up since we have a ton of players on the roster that are 6'6" or shorter. The same is true with the center position... we have names on paper to replace McGee and D12.

But who do we have to take on 6'7" Kuzma's place, or 6'9" Morris' place? The back up forwards with defensive and rebounding abilities is where we are lacking the most compared to the 2020 squad. I mean, there's Gabriel and who else?

If we are able to add more players to the roster, getting another guard or two should be a much lower priority than getting defensive forwards with legit, traditional size.

While LeBron is still a star in his current role, his reluctance to play the point is an indirect cost of his decline. While still great and presumably a 1B or 2 on a contender, it's harder to build a team around the role his body is willing and able to play throughout the regular season.

LeBron and Organization chose LONGEVITY and Kareem's record over possible 2nd ring in LeBron/Laker era. He's already the GOAT as 99.99% would say even if he only retires with 4 rings. He wants to play till hes 41-42. Just as long as he keeps getting his STATS and longevity, he's content with not winning another ring. Nothing more to prove. That's why no more full time at the POINT GUARD position. Well maybe except for the playoffs in crunch time aka 4th quarter closing time.

Here's another one: why did Pelinka sign a 3-pt shooting center after they've just won a championship with 2 non-shooting centers on the roster?

Because Pelinka as a first year GM had no freaking clues about anything and just gotten very lucky all those players that he signed fell into his lap. Rondo, Howard, and Kieff were like the left overs that no other teams wanted and they were like the only choice at the time.

Hence why after winning the championship, Pelinka tore the team down making major unnecessary changes. Why? because he didn't really understand the value and fit of those players. He just got lucky he signed them in the first place!!!

Now Jeanie is probably going to give him at least three more years because he "won" a championship.

We don't have the assets to get two backcourt guys who can shoot and defend.

You’re underestimating how important Rondo was during that playoff run.

That wasn’t even the main issue with the trade. It was Pelinka being a careless idiot with first round picks and traded THAT along with Green for that scrub Schroder.

…..that first round pick that would have had us drafting DESMOND BANE! The sniper from 3 and great defensive wing player that this team lacks.

Desmond Bane on this team, especially with Lebron would have single handedly extended this championship window.

Exactly, that is one of Pelinka’s weaknesses, a failure to understand the value of young players. An experienced advisor might have advised him differently but our management is too insecure and cheap to bring in experience.

Agree but Dennis was coming off his best season ever so it was going to cost to get him. Hindsight is an easy game to play. That said, Bane is quite literally the perfect 2 guard for this team. And on top of that you still have AC, Kuz, KCP + the pick you traded for WB that could've been Herb Jones... yup, Rob is a bit reckless and trigger happy.

Agreed. He ran the point very well, especially in the finals, even Jimmy Butler couldn’t stop him.

That’s my issue with all the draft picks that have been tradaed before and since then. They matter, but according to Lebron & mgmt, they’re no big deal. A lot of fans on LG echoed that sentiment and now we’re in the pitiful position of being happy that we signed Lonnie Walker & drafted Max Christie, both of whom they desperately need to be significant contributors.

Because of that, I’ve lost virtually all enthusiasm for this team. I’ve never been lower on them than I am now, even during some of the non playoff years.

Similar. Mostly because last season was without question, the worst Lakers season I ever had the displeasure of watching in my life. Never have I seen a team so awful to watch, and so boring. Even during the tank years, there was excitement and flashes of excellent play, especially from exciting young talent. Even during that 2013 season with all the (bleep) that happened with the awful start that lead to Mike Brown being fired, hiring Dantoni over Phil, Dwight not quite being prime Dwight, and of course, Kobe tearing his Achilles. But even then, it had Kobe heroic performances and the Lakers being legit the hottest team in the league at the 2nd half of the season.

What I saw last season, abysmal couldn’t even describe it. Few words could. People had to have watched that team play to REALLY, TRULY know, how incredibly bad and unfun that team was. Not just seeing the record on paper. Lebron scoring 40+ point games or whatever didn’t do (bleep) for me, because those performances felt so lifeless.

They had to rest the non-PG Lebron from his PG duties because there was a short break in between seasons.

Nevertheless, we were ahead in the Suns series 2-1 and were ready to win game 4 when AD got hurt.

Who knows what was the max potential of that team if completely healthy considering DS also was post Covid at the start of the playoffs and was obviously out of rhythm upon coming back.

It's so easy to bash Pelinka.

They seem to have felt the load of being a starting PG would wear Lebron down. In a way if you look at Lebron's own shooting and ways of attacking, it does seem things got easier for him and he started to play way more off the ball when Dennis (and then WB) came to town. You saw a lot more SG type of sets from Lebron. Just spotting up and just moving off the ball and a catch.

The thing is offense comes and goes. If you even make a deal to change that would have been nice to have kept our defensive identity. We moved away from the shotblocking and elite rim protection that AD/McGee gave and then the size in the backcourt. We went with a slower Gasol, and then a small PG who was easily roasted in switches.

What made the 2019 team a championship team was moreso their defense than their offense. They had some of the best defense i have ever seen from a Lakers team. We needed to mantain our defensive talent/size. That was the real shooting yourself in the foot GM'ing.
