First Win of the Season!... Thank goodness.

It took a team effort, and the Lakers finally got some outside shooting in the mix. The battle for the game really took place late in the third quarter.

Down 8 with 3 minutes left in the third quarter, Jokic sat and we brought back in AD to man the paint. Lonnie Walker sparked the team as he got it going from the perimeter. As Reaves found a shooter for a three and then scored an And-1 drive himself at the end of the quarter, the Lakers led 93-85 going into the fourth.

They would lead by 12 at the end of this 17-0 run. The Nuggets rallied back, however, with a 7-0 run still with Jokic on the bench.

The Lakers would work some two-man action with AD and Bron, with a shooter (either Reaves or Ryan (setting an initial screen on Jokic). They milked this for several buckets and a big Reaves three. The offense was organized and playing with purpose. They also kept the turnovers and transition buckets to a minimum unlike the previous game against the Nuggets.

Russell Westbrook had his best game of the season off the bench. Late in the game, he grabbed an offensive board, pulled it back outside, attacked past his man and scored a layup with 1:36 to go up by 11. That was the dagger. The Lakers would hold on to the 121-110 win.

To quote Bull Durham, “I love winning, man. I (bleep)ing love winning! You hear what I'm saying? It's, like, better than losing.”

LeBron -- -- He struggled finishing around the rim in the first quarter. Just a number of easy ones he couldn’t complete. Luckily the penetration allowed for AD to crash for a couple putbacks on some of those. He was aggressive to start the third quarter, maybe hoping that would help give the Lakers some burst instead of the flat ball we’ve played in some third quarters. Before you knew it, he was back up leading the game in scoring. I love watching his bully ball, just overpowering guys for layups. Fun to watch because of his unique combination of size and skills. But I really liked some of the purpose in this game. It drives me nuts (especially when Russ is on the court) when our offense is freelancing without purpose. We milked a little screen-the-screener action that had Reaves/Ryan setting a screen on Jokic, then popping out to three range. While the pop was happening, Bron and AD would get into their sideline pick and roll. This had the defensive more occupied and unable to load up as easily. Defensively, my favorite play might have been his work denying the post to prevent the ball getting to Jokic against him. Just a smart player. The Stats: He scored 26 points on 10-22 shooting (2-5 from three, 4-5 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 8 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a -1.

Davis -- -- He had 13 points on 6-8 shooting and 7 boards in the first half. He would look a little stiff after a layup over his head. Then grab his back later fighting for a loose ball and taking contact. This slowed him down offensively. In the fourth, with the Nuggets on a run we called timeout and AD would make a couple jumpers out of that to get going again. Good job by the coaches getting him re-engaged there. Late in the game with 2:13 left, LeBron got Jokic on a switch and settled for a three. AD battled under the board and tipped it in, but let out a bit of a yell in pain and grabbed his back. Big tip by AD and just fought through that pain to help get the W. Interesting sub pattern tonight where we had AD playing quite a few more minutes against Jordan when Jokic sat. that helped lead to some of that +15 and the big runs between the third and fourth quarter. I mentioned those minutes last time we played the Nuggets as being a key. They really pushed in more chips in this one during those stretches. No threes from AD. His midrange around that 15-foot and in area looked good. He was getting his shot over the front of the rim instead of coming up short. Good to see. The 6 offensive boards were huge. LeBron had some chippies he missed early, but AD was crashing and cleaning up LBJ misses from start to finish. The Stats: He had 23 points on 10-18 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 15 boards (6 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a +15.

Beverley -- -- Two things I’ve liked lately have been really reducing Bev’s role. He played 21 minutes tonight, which is more in his range. He also is not freelancing or relied on to create as much. He sank one three in four attempts and hit a floater on another attempt. Again, another defensive breakdown that wasn’t like the Pat Bev we know. He let Green blow past him for a dunk. Our vet guards need to lock in a little more with their focus on D. I feel like once our team gets locked in and on the same page more that Bev will tighten the screws more. I’m not expecting lock down D, just him more locked in mentally. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-5 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists and 3 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -9.

Walker IV -- -- I’ve talked about how streaky he is. Our starting shooting guard was 4-27 from three heading into this game. The streakiness was on the bad side. Finally, we got it on the other side. His first jumper, a corner three went down. That was a good sign. He went off in the third quarter with a few pull-up jumpers and a couple of threes. This was a huge spark that got the energy in the building up and carried through to other players. The knock on him offensively has always been consistency. Hopefully, the law of averages plays out and we get a few more good games to get him back to at least career averages shooting wise. Defensively, he had a great block from behind that just kind of exploded out of nowhere in the first half. He also came up with a steal during that third quarter run. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-14 shooting (3-5 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 1 foul in 35 minutes. He was a +15.

Brown -- -- He had 8 points on 4-7 shooting in the first half. With Porter Jr., you needed more length out there in the starting lineup. We were also having him double the post at times. There was a good sequence to end the first half where he doubled Jokic and then quickly recovered to his man as soon as Jokic picked up the dribble. He missed his threes, but had some nice layups, including going coast to coast on one of them. On another he got into Jokic’s chest and finished. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-8 shooting (0-3 from three ) to go with 6 boards, 1 steal and 2 foul sin 26 minutes. He was a -7.

Westbrook -- -- Off the bench again, he was a +9 in the first half with 11 points on 4-8 shooting with 5 assists. And another +9 in the second half to lead the team with a +18. Again, as I mentioned in the last write-up, respect to Russ for how he’s handled the bench role. We need to separate those minutes between him and LeBron to a certain extent to help both of them. It’s tough on LeBron with the lack of shooting on this team. It’s tough on Russ, too, because that’s how he works best. Russ shot it well tonight. His three he made in the first half was textbook how we want it. He relocated to the weakside corner, which pushed out another Laker to take the wing. That plays the percentages as Russ shoots threes best from the corner. They left him, LeBron found him and Russ knocked it down. The other option there could be setting a pin-in screen for the other Laker. We also had LeBron and Russ run a two-man action where Russ took the pass, got downhill in the middle of the lane and dumped it off to a baseline cutter for the easy layup. Pressure on the rim forced the help. Both those plays were started off-ball working with LBJ. We also saw Russ return the favor to LeBron who sealed a screener and then rolled off the Russ bounce pass for the layup. Late in the game (I think it was a set play out of a timeout), we called Russ’s number off ball. LeBron fired a pass to him cutting baseline, but Russ fumbled it out of bounds. Looked like a sure dunk, but again, right process here. Getting Russ into that dunker spot and making him a threat off ball helps make others better when they have the ball. You’ve to to be methodical on how you make Russ a threat off ball in order for guys like LeBron/AD to be threats on ball. On ball, his best play was an iso to breakdown Murray with the dribble for a layup, then a little shimmy afterward. The offensive rebounding in this game was great. He had a huge offensive board when Ryan missed a jumper, then gave it back to him in the corner and he drained the three. He had 8 assists with just 3 turnovers, so with the good shooting, the offensive boards and a good assist to turnover ratio, he did a good job with the possessions and creating extra possessions. Defensively, he had a great block on Porter under the hoop from behind just after Russ returned to the floor later in the fourth. Still some issues with the off-ball defense where we gave a little back. He didn’t box out to give up an offensive board and an eventual KCP three. He also didn’t close or help on a pin-in screen on Reaves. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-12 shooting (2-4 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 8 assists, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +18.

Reaves -- -- All of our most frequently played lineups that have the highest points per possession have Reaves in them. As we are in the basement on most offensive stats, you need him on the court. Kid balled out tonight. A +15 in 27 minutes, making 2-4 of his threes again. Another good shooting game from him and he’s now one of our best three shooters early on this season. Multiple winning plays in this one. His two threes helped space the floor for LeBron and he found him on both. The second one was a deep three in the middle of our 17-0 run. To close that third quarter, he took a kickout from Russ in the corner, attacked the closeout and scored an And-1 layup with 0.2 on the shotclock. A couple of assists in this one. The first was finding Ryan for a corner three after Reaves collapsed the D off the dribble. The second one was a great read of Walker cutting baseline and he threaded the pass to him for the dunk while we had an extra-man advantage. He and Russ were huge off the bench tonight. Defensively, we matched him up with Murray quite a bit. That was tough as Murray had it going, making some tough shots. Then with Reaves on him, he was able to get some pull-ups in the midrange, stopping on a dime. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-6 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 1 foul in 27 minutes. He was a +15.

Jones -- -- Just 2 minutes in this one and a foul. He just doesn’t have enough strength to deal with Jokic. Bryant would be a better match up here. We quickly sat him after the Nuggets focused on that and caused issues rapidly. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting, had 1 block and 1 foul in 2 minutes. He was a -6.

Ryan -- -- The key with him is being able to hide him on defense. We were able to park on him KCP for a stretch defensively. So we got in 12 minutes and the team was a +11. He buried two threes and just looks automatic despite sitting all game on the bench. We have so many guys with negative gravity on the perimeter, it’s great when we can find a way to get him out there, then play with purpose to find him shots or use his gravity to open things up for others. It helps all of our star players even if he doesn’t touch the ball. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (2-3 from three) to go with 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a +11.

Gabriel -- -- He scored a couple of layups, one on the break, the other after he missed a baseline 13-footer by about 3 feet to the left. Right now, it’s still on summer break or something. Just looks ugly. Good hustle hustle and activity on D. He disrupted a Porter shot on iso to force a miss. He denied a KCP drive. Late last season, his perimeter shot looked pretty good. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards and 1 foul in 9 minutes. He was a +0.

Nunn -- -- The lineups with Nunn in it have been among our poorest offensively coming into this game. He’s been super inefficient and killed us even in short stints. We ran him just a 3-minute stint in the first half. He’d bury a three on iso and airball another iso attempt. That was it for the night. Good for Ham. We need to tighten up the rotations so the guys that are contributing perform at a higher level. Rotate Nunn back in later after we’ve gotten more reps in as a team. It just hasn’t been working. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-1 from three) and no other stats in 3 minutes. He was a +4.

Ham -- -- Key Moment: They dumped water on him in the locker room afterward. Ham started his NBA career in Denver and his assistant coaching career with the Lakers. Tonight he got his first W as the Laker head coach. The process has been good despite the outcome. It’s a tough roster both in construction and newness. We are building everything from the ground up once again, so you’ve just got to expect struggles. That Portland game was his L with how little they ran their sets and how we tried to close the game with Russ and no purpose in the offense. But again you’ve got to give coaches some room to let things play out. That Portland game kind of helped lead to Russ off the bench. (Real key of this game was that 17-0 run between the third and fourth quarters as we picked on those DeAndre Jordan second units.)

Key Substitution: Russ and Reaves both came off the bench, but both closed in place of Brown and Beverley. They both played more minutes than those two, as well and led the team with the +18 and +15 respectively. Note that Nunn only played 3 minutes as mentioned above.

Key Stats: Lakers were 5-14 from three at the half and Russ had 11 points on 4-8 shooting. They finished 13-30 from three (43.4%) and Russ finished 6-12 with 18 points. Efficiency from both those areas.

Thanks DB! Everything seemed to fall into place tonight. Russ flourishing off the bench, AD battling through his aching back and sparking us, the three ball going in. So nice to get a win!

There were a lot of things to like in the game:

- we edged out the Nuggets in rebounds (+3 or +4)

- while I'm still not fond of the number of threes taken, at least it was evenly distributed (no 7-10 attempts from one brick layer)

- AD in particular didn't take a three

- the defense on Jokic in the 4th (Lebron fronting him at times) was stellar

- WB not only playing well for once, but seemingly embracing the bench role

The most troubling issue continues to be AD's health... we'd probably have won three games (or more) if he stayed 100%. We'll see.

Benching Nunn and Jones and reducing Bev’s role today made me so very happy. Jones and Nunn haven’t looked like nba players and Bev has been truly bad on offense. Great to get the first win and here’s hoping the Lakers build some momentum with a win on Wednesday.

Finally. Nice to see a win. Must have been an easier write up, too. We started off slow and Lebron looked off. At one point looked like a repeat of the previous few games. But a big game/boost by Westbrook/Reaves off the bench, and Lebron really stepped up his game in the 2nd half. AD was very good all night, high effort game from him.

Concerning: Do the big 3 have to play this well for us to win games? This was as good a big 3 game you will get, 18 points + 18 from Russ (2 threes) off the bench. 23/15 high effort AD game. Lebron with a big 2nd half, 26 points.

Good Win

Superstars (as defined) are expected to play well for most of the games within the team concept.

As bad/terrible the Lakers' record is at this time - noteworthy that other teams with better talent and far better balanced rosters with owners of unlimited financial resources to pay the taxes when exceeding the Cap Space have comparable bad records, from Nets (1-5 while paying $108M in luxury tax bill) to Clippers (2-4, with Kwahi missing 4 of the first 6 games at the start of the season while paying $144.7M in luxury taxes) to Heat (2-4).

Lakers are paying 32.2M in luxury taxes

Tell Ham to tell Wenyen not to park on the 3 pt line, we need him in the paint

Troy Brown size is legit wing, I hope him and JTA can take those big wings, sparing LeBron on defense

Man, DS and TB would be nice, DS and Lonnie can go get bucket on their own if need too, I think TB too at spurts (unlike Jones) and all three should be able to stretch the floor with limits

I hope we hit the valley and now trekking that steep climb to the mountain top, healthy playoff Bron-Brow

Awesome game. Lonnie's 10 quick points to start and sustain that 18-2 run in the 3rd was so pivotal. Like you said, super streaky

Thanks DB.

Lakers won the rebounding battle, points in the paints and turnover war.

As long as they do those things and shoot average or better from three point range, they should win.

Glad Nunn and Beverly minutes are reduced. Man they have looked bad so far this year.

Just watched the full game and here are my takeaways

1. One of the key reason Russ shone today is because post injury Murray couldnt keep up to his pace

2. We need to draw a form dedicated to make shots for Kelly. I think he touched the balls no more than 10 times and scored a couple of threes

3. Nunn is poor. The discussion of him could have saved the Lakers last year is complete (bleep).

4. I miss KCP every time seeing him made a defensive play or made a three. I bet Lebrun may feel the same way.

Good Points

* Imagine if Westbrook wasn’t able to take advantage of a post injury Murray (or even Klay/Kwahi)?
* Not sure who “Kelly” is?
* Ham limited Nunn’s minutes. His success with the Heat (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kendrick_Nunn) suggests that he has great potential
* Would you miss KCP missing shots, like what he did during the regular season?

Did You Know
Golden State has allowed at least 125 points in four of its first seven games, just the second time it has done so in franchise history. The last time was in the 1962-63 season, according to ESPN's Stats & Information research.

The Warriors also have allowed 854 points so far this season -- the most allowed by a defending champion through seven games in NBA history, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. They have the No. 21 defensive rating in the league.

The Brooklyn Nets held a players-only meeting after Saturday night's 125-116 loss to the Indiana Pacers. It was the Nets' fourth straight loss and dropped them to 1-5 this season

After the struggling LA Clippers dropped their fourth straight game, veterans like Marcus Morris Sr. sounded off on the team's need to start sacrificing and picking up their intensity and effort.

With star Kawhi Leonard (knee) sidelined for the third straight game, the Clippers were drilled, 112-91, by the New Orleans Pelicans at Crypto.com Arena

Thanks, DB.

What a great win.

This team is not horrible. Just terribly built re: roster balance.
But those guys have a nice chemistry and play with intensity and hustle.

We still need a little bit of size and shooting though Those players are not gonna shoot 40% from three every night.

I thought DS and TB would be our best min contract signings in terms of value. DS because he's done well in this system in the past. Bryant as he gets back into shape. TB was outplaying our other bigs and was the big body we were missing last night.

law of average game, it is obvious we can't maintain 44% from the 3, some of the shots LW4 made were pretty wild shots, although Den hit some lucky 3s as well. i will wait to see a few more wins before getting too excited.

Staying at 44% or 21% 3pt shooting is unrealistic

Consistently having
* Westbrook push the pace while leading the pace for easier shots
* Having Reeves and/or Ryan playing with AD/LBJ to setting multiple screens and getting space for P&R action
* Playing great D
is something realistic and should be expected every game

Nets/Clips’ troubles while noting Blazers/Spurs/Jazz’s current success says that often a great TEAM is better than a team with a lot of TALENT

i honestly don't buy the Jazz/Spurs surprise start, i remember when we had Swaggy and the crew got off to a hot start at the beginning of the season, and we had threads like "maybe the best 10 man deep team in the league" or something like that. i firmly believe they will come down to the earth soon.
