As an Italy fan, I'm still very bitter about 2002. That was beyond egregious.

Its funny I was thinking about that 2002 round of 16 vs Italy because we will be playing Brazil now in round of 16. That 2002 Italy team was stronger in talent than the 1998 Quarterfinalists and World Cup winning 2006 team. They had almost a perfect balance of attack and defense with superstars like Vieri, Totti, Maldini, Del Piero, Buffon, Cannavaro and Nesta with support from Zanetti and Zambrotta. But Korea caught a decisive break that in my opinion led to the decisive tying goal by Seol Ki Hyeon in that the worlds greatest CB pairing of Cannavaro and Nesta both did not play. But Ill be honest even had Italy advanced they were most likely not getting past Spain. Spain thoroughly dominated Korea in a way Italy frankly never did in that game and Spain legitimately beat Korea but Korea got lucky calls in their favor. Italy had a terrible habit similar to England during that era of not maximizing their attacking talent. Had they kept their killer instinct, Im sure Italy could have put 2 or even 3 past Korea that game.

Tbey did, they were just disallowed. Repeatedly. That game was a joke and Italy should have not only won, but won easily. Also, Italy had a history up to that point of dominating Spain.

It's generally regarded as one of the biggest scandals in World Cup history.

You guys got your just reward in 2006 with a lesser team and Spain got their justice in 2010

Dutch scored in the 10th minute and the USMNT inability to generate an offense becomes a liability.

The Dutch havent even broken out of their second gear yet. Simple way of saying, the dutch arent even taking the US seriously and still leading 2 to 0. Freaking DEST......what are you doing?????

I wouldn't call it that. That would suggest that they have just imposed their will, and that's not what's happened. We've had more of the ball and generally looked good that half. But two really poor moments leaving a free runner totally unmarked near the penalty area have us down 2-0, the goal right before the half being a killer. But it's the same old story, we just lack a finishing quality. Our guys can run, but then they lack the skill necessary to score goals at a high level. A heavy touch here, a poor pass or cross there, a poor strike there, etc.

Who knows what happens if Pulisic takes his chance 2 minutes in, but I'm not surprised.

Or that other chance Pulisic screwed up with the bad pass to Robinson after the run by Weah.....

Freaking USA....this isnt 1998 Holland where the US would be systematically picked apart and destroyed. Should be ashamed of themselves for making stupid mistakes where the Dutch dont have to even try hard to score.

Just no finishing quality. I guess 5 yards from goal isn't close enough.

Yeah, but the pressure in the elimination rounds is you have to score to win....no ties just to get by like the previous matches. For this young team its a pretty large flaw they have when they start playing quality teams.

A few of our guys are great runners. I haven't seen much skill though, relatively speaking.
