Very sad, knew it was coming, but still stings. He was a childhood hero of mine. I still remember the excitement of going to see him play against George Best in a New York Cosmos/LA Aztecs games in the mid '70s.

I just read that. Even as a kid when I know most of the other adults in my community didn't really know much of anything about soccer, they all knew Pele.

RIP maestro

One of the greatest sporting legends in the history of life. A sad day for sure.

I'm not a soccer fan the only name I really know is Pele. He was famous for the bicycle kick. Was he the first to do it? RIP

This. His name was universally known by everyone when I was growing up. From an outsiders perspective, he certainly lived a good one.

Growing up in the Midwest I never knew soccer existed until I became aware of Pele.

100%. I came to the States in 1980 as a 4 year old. Elvis, the Beatles, Bruce Lee, Pele and Mohammad Ali were names I was somehow already familiar with. I'm sure kids born a bit later would throw Michael Jackson into that mix. True international icons.

BBC News

(Pelé - Brazil's football legend, has died - BBC News)

Quote:
Pelé, widely regarded as the greatest football player of all time, has died.

He was 82 and had been suffering from cancer.

He scored a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country.

He’s the only player to win the World Cup three times, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Dan Roan, Joe Wilson and Katy Watson in Brazil.

A bit later, you appropriately added Rick Rude and DiBiase onto yer self-evident world icons pile.

He was buried today and the procession drove by his mother's house, who is still alive at the age of 100.
