Samb? Guess they just went with someone they could stash oversees to save a roster spot....basically a very talented, but raw shot-blocker. |

I don't believe this. Anybody know who the heck this Samb is???
Hassan Adams of Arizona. Kevin Pittsnogle of West VA. Taj Gray of Oklahoma. Marcus Slaughter of SDSU. ANY of these guys would have been a nice value pickup in the 2nd round.
We get a very smart pick int he 1st round, and a WTF pick in the 2nd with several good guys still on the board.
Who the heck is Samb???

From what I've read, a developmental player to play in Europe a few years. Can't help now, but late in the 2nd round, I don't think a developmental center is a bad pick. |

This dude's description reminds me of Somalia Somaka or whatever, the dude who backed up Shaq for a few seconds.
CHIEKH SAMB
Strengths: A bigman with immense physical tools, but extremely raw fundamentally ... Athletic bigman who runs the floor especially well. Very fluid athlete for a seven footer ... Decent touch around the basket ... He's very raw, but due to his tremendous athleticism, he has NBA interest ... Extremely long wing span, good shot blocker ... Has shown a lot of improvement in the past year ...
Weaknesses: A real project ... Lacks great fundamentals and understanding having started the game late ... Not a great offensive player, lacks range and great post skills ... Not a physically imposing player, doesn't have overpowering strength ... lacks the shoulders and upper body to add much weight ...
Notes: Averages close to 10 pts and 10 rebs per game for Barca's B team Cornella. |

Hassan Adams aint playing the three in the NBA. I would have liked to get Diaz that late, another big upside guy in the backcourt. We probably should have just traded this pick, to be honest. We're not going to roster spots available for more than one rookie, but I guess there was no interest, so we got somebody to keep overseas. Makes sense, but I've never heard of this guy, and from what I can find, he doesn't sound like much of a prospect. |

Found a link. This is the equivalent of a wasted DOuthit pick in my eyes.
http://www.nba.com/draft2006/profiles/CheickSamb.html
His stats say -- and I'm not making this up -- that he's 7-1, 195 pounds.
I'm PRAYING that's a misprint.
Shoot, Hassan Adams or even Pittsnogle would have been a vast improvement. Why worry about saving a roster spot for flotsam and jetsam like DeviN green, anyway? It's a SECOND round pick -- it's not evena guaranteed spot, anyway.
Why not get the draft rights to a proven talent at the NCAA level?????

I'm with MIM on this one. I am not a Kupchak fan but the reasonable choice was between Collins, Ager, or White. Collins, Ager or White may be better athletes but reality is that without Farmar, I doubt UCLA makes the Sweet 16 much less the actual NCAA title game. None of the other guys remaining made their teams better to the extent Farmar made UCLA better.
In many draft analyses, Farmar was ranked second only to Marcus Williams as a pure PG so I can live with this pick since he actually tested out to have decent athletic ability. Nash isn't that great a defender but was MVP because of his court vision and his ability to make everyone on the Suns better- Farmar showed this trait at UCLA- the question is whether he can take it up to the NBA level- but, how good do you have to be if you're throwing it to Kobe- all you must do is hit the shot if Kobe throws it back (which Smush or Sasha can't do).
I won't blame Kupchak on this one even if Farmar turns out to be a bust- it was good risk taking. |
