...Considering we now have Maurice Evans.

Detroit then traded swingman Maurice Evans to the Los Angeles Lakers for the rights to Cheick Samb, a 7-1 center from Senegal. Samb had been taken with the 51st pick.

Evans averaged five points in 80 games for the Pistons last season, sharing a backup role with Carlos Delfino.

"We felt there just weren't going to be enough minutes" for Evans, Dumars said. "His agent called and said they might want to be somewhere where more minutes would be available, and we tried to make that happen."

Maurice Evans is a 6'5" 27 year old SG, who is a ready bench backup player. Late second round picks are long shots. The Lakers have a useful player to fill a role. Samb is an interesting project, who won't be ready to contributes for years.

Dont look at the 5 points average....Thats in limited and uneven minutes. But one thing you can be assured of is Evans is a real nice defender, really strong at both the 3 and 2,Built strong, and athletic.

Samb is at least 2 years away from being a "possibility at the back-up role at center....."....

I think this is a really nice pick-up.Farmar and Evans adds a whole lot for us......If we can now go get another starter type for Mihm, and also add banks to Farmar and Evans,we will be well beyond just a top 10 team IMO......

the biggest plus wont be amazing performances, but a nice hustle player/spark off the bench. the best part about him is that gives kobe REST. something that is quite priceless. the more rest we can afford to give kobe the fresher his legs will be in the 4th qtr, by the end of the season, and the longer his career will last.

In a weak draft, getting anything out of #51 is good.

Good solid trade - something for nothing. Evans will be a solid bench player for us who defends two positions very well. No jump shot whatsoever, can slash to the basket and is a good rebounder for his position. Good job on this one...

I can't see the negativity regarding this trade. We already have a young center project in Bynum, we didn't need another one. IMO we drafted Samb only to trade him for Evans.

Evans is a solid player. IMO he was drafted to replace Devean George, should he (and he likely will) walk this summer. He can play two positions and is pretty similar to what we had previously in Jumaine Jones and Laron Profett. Those guys didn't have great stats, but they were solid role players, and that is what Evans should be for us.

The art of small moves, maybe Mitch is getting it.

Great deal! There's probably no way Samb would have made it anyway. Like another poster said, players picked that late almost never make it. So we got a good defensive role player with the 51st pick.

Evans is a lot better than a lot of people think..

Great trade IMO....I was really mad that we got him over Hassan Adams, who is probably similar to what Maurice Evans is.

Maurice Evans is a solid player. Add him to the roster, lose one of the projects.

Getting rid of Slava was a start. Now we need to cut the rest of the dead weight and add solid players like Evans.

Great move with that 51 pick of Samb, I doubt very much he makes the league or has any impact.

In the interview with Kupchak before the draft, he talked about the possibility of trading a pick for a player using their trade exemption so I suspect this deal had already been agreed to before the draft and the Lakers picked Samb for Detroit.

What's the skinny on Evans (measurements, vert, etc.). I've read he's a freakish athlete. I've seen James White has been compared to Evans in couple of places. It seems this guy is not afraid to explode in traffic.

Evans was one of the best 3 point shooting % about halfway into the season until they cut his PT.

You are right. Mitch in an interview last night said the trade was agreed to the morning of the draft. Small trade for Mitch but a good one. Hope Mitch can turn some of the other extra pieces (ex. Mihm, Cook, Mckie) into something useful.

In other words, the Lakers drafted for the Pistons. Getting a proven solid bench player in Evans for a late second round pick is a good use of resources. Picks that late are usually projects with little hope of making the roster.
