Phil and West can't coexist.

Some think Gay has the potential to be the best player in the draft. West could use a star player to go with Pau. It might be an excellent move.

Weren't we blasting Phil because he couldn't get Shaq and Kobe to get along? Shouldn't Buss receive at least some of the blame for not putting these 2 on the same page?

Jerry West never liked Phil. He didn't want Phil as a coach in the first place. Phil started openly campaigning for the job, and a reporter asked Jerry West one day about Phil Jackson, and Jerry West responded, "___ Phil Jackson"... (keeping it clean so don't get edited). Then he said it a second time, for emphasis. The players campaigned for him and it was seen as a way to put people in the seats, and Phil came, and we wound up winning three titles, so it was a good thing.

But Phil also didn't really get along well with Jerry West. Jerry was a hands on GM. He liked to be involved in things, and he sometimes liked to receive credit for it. Their egos clashed, culminating with Phil Jackson throwing Jerry West out of the locker room after a post-season game. Suddenly Jerry developed anxiety problems and had to take time away. Jerry leaving was him and Phil not being able to co-exist. And to some extent you might say Phil and Kobe's issues also had roots in that. Kobe remains close with West, and Phil took exception to Kobe giving Jerry West (and Jerry West taking) credit for the Lakers success.

It doesn't matter if it's in the locker room or in the office. Sometimes mighty egos clash.

You give the Logo 10 million like you give Jax. The Logo would be here.

Buss is going to learn the hard way how important the Logo is to this franchise.

Wow a guy doesn't really do much of anything for most of his tenure in Memphis and he has one decent draft, suddenly he's the world's greatest GM again. Tell me: How many playoff games have they won since he got there?

Houston got screwed, West worked his magic again. Reminiscent of Vlade for Kobe. And poor Stromile Swift, he left Memphis for Houston, they just sucked him right back in.....

IMO it's one of those trades that works out for both teams - but with the potential to be horrible for Houston. Battier is a very solid underrated player. Plays great defense, dives to the floor, can score 15 a game if you need him to, completely unselfish. Good fit for Van Gundy.

Swift didn't fit into Houston and wasn't going to. Houston rid themselves of a bad contract and a player who wasn't going to be contributing.

Of course, Gay has a chance to be huge. If he fulfills that promise, Houston could by crying for the next few years.

I've got to say that the Lakers are not big losers in this draft. They got a solid player at the 26th spot and they got Evans from Detroit for a second rounder. For the spot the Lakers were in, I think they came out with a decent draft. They got a B- from Foxsports, so it wasn't as bad.
The Knicks had a bad draft, so I wouldn't even put the Lakers in that category. I'd rather have Mitch than Isiah.

Maybe this will make up for the 2003 Troy Bell/Dahntay Jones draft.

The initiative came most likely from JVG and Houston. It's not like the 1996 Draft, not even close to it. Jerry West just had to accept the deal that was offered to him. No "magic" involved.

Phillip is an ego maniac. Heard on the local radio back then, he drove West into retirement. Big Joe/Doug were very close to West and got most of their inside Laker info from him.

West didn't want to put up with all the crap Phillip was dishing his way so he retired.

The premature end of the Lakers Kobe/Shaq dynasty started when West retired. All that crap that went on between Shaq/Kobe while Phillip sat on his arse waiting for them to work it out would never have happened on Jerry's watch.

And yet, the Shaq-Kobe feud BEGAN while on West's watch, compounded by constant sweeps.

Phil was the savior for the Shaq-Kobe relationship. He may have taken sides, but he forced Kobe to change like no other person had done for Kobe, just as no other coach/player/FO member had done for Jordan.

You can thank Phil for the 3 rings to start. You can then thank Shaq and Kobe for winning 3 rings in spite of an obviously outmatched supporting cast.

What?? savior.... by taking Shaq side and slapping down Kobe every chance he got. Making comments about Kobe tanking games in Highschool so that he could become the hero at the end.... okay

Outmatched supporting staff.... Beside Kobe/Shaq... Horry, Fox, Fisher, by far the best team in the league. Any competant coach would have won it. See what Riley did with a much inferior team this year.

You should be thanking West for those 3 rings. He built that team up after the Showtime Lakers broke up in a very short period. The Kobe/Shaq lakers should have won 5-6 rings and would have if West was around to keep things in order and drafting the right players.

However if you want to thank Phillip for something, thank him for driving out the face of the franchise.

Let's wait and see what happens....If I remember correctly....JW traded away Marcus Banks for Troy Bell and Dahntay Jones on draft night a few years back. People were all up on Jerry's nuts for trading for the 2 most athletic players available.....turns out all three of them were duds. Do I give Jerry credit....HELL YES! He got some great players with limitless potential for an invisible role player last night. But please, let's wait and see how these guys pan out before we put the Great Jerry West on a higher Pedistal.
