I think he'll stay, but if he declares and is available, Mitch had best snap him up.

If Arthur declares, then he has a promise somewhere in the lotto.

btw- Anyone notice that Ante Tomic has declared for the draft? He's the kid that Mitch flew out to see last year. 7'2" with a Gasol-like game.

DraftExpress has an updated list of who is declaring or not or on the fence.

Yes, though Euros are tough to track for sincerity. He may just want the exposure, in hopes of bettering his draft position next year. He'll only stay in the draft if promised a decent pick. His draft prospects are similar to Arthur.

We're in a tough spot: what we need MOST is really free agency help, and lottery-type talent, but we're (again) too low to get some of the players that could really help this team, such as Brewer, and of course, the top-5 caliber big men.

With that said, I'd be happy if we got Nick Young, although I doubt he slides to us: from the little I've seen of him, he's basically a ball-handling 2-guard who can score a little bit and do a little bit of everything. In terms of what we ask our 2-guards to do, I think (again, from the little I've seen of him) that he'd be a good fit. Unfortunately, I'm sure a lot of the NBA teams have taken notice of him as well during the tournament, so his stock has gone up.

I haven't seen Rudy Fernandez or Marco Bellinelli, but, IMO, the international guard/perimeter player (i.e., combo guard/forward), especially European ones, have a poor track record in the NBA: those who really aren't athletic slashers (which is really ALL of them) haven't panned out, or are fringe rotational players at best (Udrih, Planninic, Sasha) The only international successes have been the more athletic ones that have tremendous speed and/or tenacity going to the hole (see: Ginobili, Barbosa). And, although I haven't seen either, from the sounds of it, Bellinelli and Fernandez are more of the unathletic-shooter type than the athletic slasher type. NO THANKS.

Even though he's projected to go in the 2nd round, DJ Strawberry could be an excellent defender for us.

Also, as far as sleepers, what do you guys think of Dominic McGuire from Fresno St.??

6-8, 210 - G/F

Good all-around game. Plays multi-positions.

He even blocked 3.6 shots per game. Pretty impressive for a swingman (could he be kinda like Gerald Wallace???)

Here's what Draft Express says about his D...

Quote:

Defensively, McGuire is averaging an outstanding 3.6 blocks per game thanks to his combination of size, length, excellent timing and the quickness in which he gets off his feet. While this strength is not particularly likely to translate over to the NBA, he does have the tools to become an extremely disruptive defender on the wing, especially in terms of his lateral quickness. Likewise, he is a very strong rebounder at the WAC level, pulling down just under 9 per game to complete a very versatile picture. Just to illustrate that point, he had a triple-double a few weeks ago against San Diego, with 14 points (4-6 FG), 14 rebounds, 10 blocks. Just for good measure, he added 4 assists and 6 turnovers.

Thoughts???

I can't imagine that would be too hard for him to get.

I was thinking more along the lines of Top 10 considering another year with more minutes as a sophomore in a weak bigman draft could really net him a higher draft position.

Arthur falls outside of the top two tiers, which is somewhere after pick #8. He's a young tweener; it is far from clear which forward spot he'll inhabit. He also faded as the season progressed. If a team is patient, and Arthur proves to be a hard worker, he has a chance to be an impact player. I think the worst case for now is pick #15, which may put him within striking range.

Another good prospect is reportedly considering the draft: Chase Budinger. Budinger is a better prospect than Arthur. Everyone (including Lute Olson) figured he was staying at Arizona for at least one more year. Apparently he's changed his mind, and is weighing his options. His season ended on a sour note, and though Arizona always has pretty good talent, that team is graduating two starters, with a third starter firmly committed to this draft. Budinger could crack into what I consider a strong second tier (B. Wright, Horford, Hawes, Hibbert).

Budinger is the real deal. He overpasses at times, but when he's aggressively looking to shoot, he's an awesome talent.

And what an athlete. Gets up on his second jump very quick.

Hoop IQ, a decent jumper, athletic, handles, etc. He'll be a near All-Star one day.

if we keep the pick, we need to accumulate assets.
we have to draft the best player available - period.
imo it will be belinelli (if we're lucky) - but regardless - it has to be the best PLAYER available.

at 33 - draft the best available defensive specialist.

Just read that Darren Collison is declaring for the draft but not hiring an agent. If he stays in and falls to the Laker pick, I think they should be all over that. I know it would be a little weird to draft UCLA point guards two years in a row, but there's the PG defender that so many people have been clamoring for.

Collison won't be there if he declares.

But if he is, they absolutely have to take him, then trade Farmar for the best player you can get.

Collison is the better PG.

Draft update.

-Tyler Hansbrough is expected to announce soon that he will be returning to North Carolina for his junior season.

-Hasheem Thabeet’s guardian Oliver Noah told DraftExpress on Sunday that a meeting conducted between himself and UConn head coach Jim Calhoun in Atlanta went very well, and that it appears likely right now that Thabeet will be returning to school for his sophomore season.

-Nearly everyone DraftExpress spoke to in Atlanta is hearing that Thaddeus Young will be leaving Georgia Tech for the NBA draft.

Portsmouth Invitational Rosters Usually the top 2-5 guys from this Tourney end up borderline late 1st rounders/2nd rounders.

Based on the holes in his game, he is a definite possibility when the Laker pick is announced. Very likely has the best upside of anyone left on the board at that point (high risk/high reward prospect), maybe Mini Buss will lobby on his behalf.

Collison: In a PG-starved draft, Collison will not last beyond the 10th pick.

I don't know why a team would do that, but it would be huge for us. Collison is going to be awesome.
