Don't like the new Linkin Park album cept for a few songs, they need to go back to their old style, more hardcore and not this soft lovey dovey crap. Anyone listen to a band called The Format? |

I used to be all about Gangsta Rap, and keeping it real and everything... till I realized I was a white kid from the upper class
My tastes nowadays include:
Some rock bands like Audioslave (too bad they're done), Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit.
Political, meaningful Hip Hop: Immortal Technique, Mos Def, Dead Celebrity Status (Great Canadian Group... really good lyrics, they're not gangsta and dont keep talking about the government or anything, they talk bout society's social issues)
Jazz: Mostly classic, but I also like contemporary.
That Matisyahu guy is pretty good as well... I also listen to some stuff my girl likes cuz she makes me. _________________ www.lakersbrasil.com

I'll listen to pretty much anything. My musical interests are too numerous to list all. To name a few genres, I like: Reggae, Dancehall Reggae, Rock, Alternative Rock, Electronic, Hip Hop(some)....
It goes on and on.
Among my favorite artists are: Moby, Bob Marley, Damien Marley, Nirvana, Green Day, Korn, Linkin Park, Alice in Chains, Sean Paul, Buju Banton, Fugees, Black Eyed Peas, Dave Mathews....
These are all from various genres, of course, and in no particular order. The list goes on and on. _________________ If you meet the Buddha in the lane, feed him the ball. ~Phil Jackson |

Anyone pick up the new Ozzy Osbourne cd, Black Rain? Its freakin awesome, and I never really listened to Black Sabbath or really any of Ozzy's older stuff, but I picked up this cd after I heard a couple songs on Kevin & Bean.
Its a sick album, anyone who likes that type of music should pick it up. _________________ Go Lakers

There are good musical guests on Late Night with Conan O'Brien this week:
Monday 6/11 - El-P
Tuesday 6/12 - Feist
Wednesday 6/13 - Patty Griffin
Thursday 6/14 - Andrew Bird
A repeat of Feist performing "I Feel it All" on Jimmy Kimmel is re-airing tonight if you missed that the first time. It's really good.
New Iron & Wine album leaked as well. |

I made that joke because almost all of the albums in your post contained their "Best New Music" recommendations of the past couple weeks (Justice, Blitzen Trapper, The National).
Personally, I don't understand all the hate that people have for that website. Sure, they have a couple writers I don't enjoy reading (who are mostly gone now from the site), but the content generally doesn't strike me as pretentious. It's not like they only write about obscure art-rock, drone, krautrock, experimental jazz, and the like. Their year end list always contains popular music.
And there's this misconception about their writers being hard on albums. But the truth is they mostly only review stuff they like. The only time negative reviews are posted are from new albums from artists' work they've enjoyed in the past.
I also read some of the other ones like Stylus, tinymixtapes, PopMatters, etc. But if I could only choose one, I'd go with Pitchfork.
I like the layout, the interviews are always interesting, and they have fresh ideas (artist guest lists). And I love reading their Top 100 lists.
I don't care that it isn't cool to like them because they are the symbol of indie music, which is the new pop, and therefore uncool now. |

the thing that bugs me about pitchfork is the rating system. i also disagree with them a lot of the time (although not recently, as you pointed out).
how the hell do they determine these ratings? what's the difference between a 6.5 and a 6.4? although i must admit their review of Radiohead's "Kid A" is spot on.
and all the people who hate on the site read it too. just like me. |

Back in the day, they used to have a description that separated the numbers into categories. Like 10.0 is a classic, 9.0-9.9 is exceptional, blah blah blah. I can't find the ranking system on the site anymore, but it used to be there beside every review.
But yeah, the rating system is too broad. That's a 100 point system! I think Rolling Stone's star system is too small, but a 100 point system is way too much. But you know, it's music. There is no such thing as an objective scoring system for music.
I always thought that Kid A review was a joke. Brent DiCrescenzo is the worst writer they ever had. And he was given the assignment for all the best albums back then, too. I'm glad he's long gone. I like Kid A, but he basically compares it to having a religious experience or an orgasm at Disneyland or something. |
