How was it? I have friends that swear this is the BEST burger. Yahoo recently had a cover story on it as well.

Umami is fantastic.

Amazing!
The burgers are a little on the small side (especially for the price (range about $9-13 per)... so you have to eat something else with it. which I would suggest the truffled cheese fries (they aren't on the regular menu). They are fantastic! I love the beer selection too.
Overall, It's a pretty hip joint! I'm definitely going back sometime soon.

The Jack-n-Box was a pleasant surprise.

I just had the burger from Street...an awesome joint off of Highland and Melrose....absolutely exquisite. Umami is still my favorite...but this place is bomb, and has a much larger selection of dishes and appetizers. Loved the Kaya Toast...an amazing dish that hits every single taste bud.

I've never had Father's Office...not on my side of town...but a friend of mine swore by it until I introduced him to Umami. At that level though...the differences become personal preference.

People have their own preferences and ideas of what a burger should be. Depending on how much you value the additions, condiments, patty, bun etc. you'll enjoy different burgers at different places.

Father's Office is a wonderful burger, but their stringent policies on condiments leave you at the mercy of their caramelized onions and aioli. It's more of a sandwich really than a tried and true burger but delicious nonetheless. Their terrific beer selection doesn't hurt.

Umami is a strong option as well. I've only had "the Umami burger" so I don't know how all the other iterations stack up. It's a clean, rich taste that has some nice complexity (I particularly enjoy the cheese crisp).

If you're looking for a flat out patty assault of indulgence then the best is Comme Ca, which offers a decadent burger served rare that will leave you sweating and artery-clogged the rest of the day.

Depends on the preference and mood.

Consumer Reports just conducted a poll of 28,000 people that asked them to rank the best burgers in America. Here's the list:

1. In-N-Out Burger
2. Five Guys Burgers and Fries
3. Fuddruckers
4. Burgerville
5. Back Yard Burgers
6. Culver's Frozen Custard
7. Whataburger
8. Hardee's
9. Carl's Jr.
10. Checkers Drive-In
11. White Castle
12. Wendy's
13. Sonic Drive-In
14. A&W Restaurant
15. Krystal
16. Burger King
17. Jack in the Box
18. McDonald's

Their sampling is a little suspect. It's a little odd that number one is one of the most regional chains there is. In-and-Out is good for what it is, but I can't see how it tops that list unless the sampling is skewed heavily towards California.

I'm guessing point system, where high avg score wins. Explains another regional chain like Burgerville, which is only in the Pacific NW. In N Out actually has more locations than Burgerville (Texas, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California).

Anyone that lives in the southbay area needs to go to 'the standing room' in Redondo Beach. It's in the back of a liquor store on the corner of Catalina and Diamond but don't be put off by that. Literally the best burger I've had is from there. It's called the 'Napoleon'.

Ingredients:

1/2 pound pattie
Bacon
Gruyere
Cheddar
Caramelized onions
arugula
fried egg
braised short rib meat
garlic truffle fries.

AMAZING!

Five Guys is overrated. Had them once only and immediately realized In 'N Out was way better.

The only burger I would occasionally get over a Double Double is a Sirloin Steak one from Jack In the Box.

The trick for any franchise is quality control.

I tried a Five Guys over in greater Boston. It wasn't anything special.

Also in Boston there's a great burger joint called Wild Willy's over in Watertown, but another franchisee that runs a Wild Willy's over in Needham is clueless.

My office is on Hollywood and Vine and in this immediate area (1 mile radius), there's 5-6 decent burger joints...

1. Umami Burger
2. Fuku Burger
3. Stout Burgers and Beers
4. Juicy Burger
5. Go Burger (definitely the worst of the bunch)

Not sure if this one's been mentioned:
Mick's Karma bar located in an office plaze near john Wayne airport. Absoultely awesome burgers for around 6 bucks.

I'd like to add to the chorus of boos for Five Guys. Their burgers don't hold a candle to in and out, especialyl for all the hype. Their dogs are pretty damn good though.

Just had this the other day. Delicious. A ton of food, but a little pricey still. The meat itself wasn't great (not very well seasoned) but the rest of the burger more than made up for it. Make sure to call in at LEAST 20 minutes in advance, though, since they take FOREVER to make your food and it's in a liquor store so there is nothing to do but stand there and chat with the other half dozen people waiting for their food. Order their Parmesan truffle fries too.
