BBC

Quote:
Purple Rain is 'best soundtrack'
Prince's Purple Rain has been named as the greatest soundtrack of all-time in a US magazine writers' poll.

It topped a list of 50 compiled by the editors of Vanity Fair magazine for a one-off publication called Movies Rock.

They called it a combination of "funk, R&B, pop, metal, and even psychedelia into a sound that defined the '80s".

But they described the film itself, released in 1984, as "perhaps the most badly-acted ever". The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night was number two on the list.

The reggae soundtrack to 1972 movie The Harder They Come, starring Jimmy Cliff, was third, ahead of Pulp Fiction and The Graduate.

3. The Harder They Come
4. Pulp Fiction
5. The Graduate
6. Superfly
7. Trainspotting
8. Saturday Night Fever
9. American Graffiti
10. The Big Chill

What about Private Parts? Forrest Gump? Most any Sofia Coppola movie?

Anything that "defined the 80's" doesn't belong on the top of any list...

I own 4 that on that list (Purple Rain, Pulp Fiction, Superfly, and The Big Chill) ...

I think Purple Rain was declared the 2nd best album of the 80s...

"The Wedding Singer"

=======

I'm not really into soundtracks but I liked the Garden State soundtrack. Zach Braff seems to have an ear for playing the right song during the right scene, whether it's TV or silver screen. I think you would enjoy the soundtrack more if you've seen the movie, although that's probably the case for most soundtracks.

Did they include soundtracks of the film versions of musicals? If so JC Superstar and Tommy should be on that list.

Kind of out of left field, but the soundtrack for Highlander, featuring Queen, was pretty good...
