blu ray is superior (quality) but also more expensive

hd dvd is not as good quality wise if you look at the numbers, but its almost to point where it gets difficult to tell a difference.

IE, I watched 300 on blu ray and hd dvd, and couldnt really notice the difference. hd dvd is also less expensive.

I'd like hd dvd to win just bc I detest Sony
But blu ray has been winning the "war" so to speak in terms of disc sales, a lot of it bc of the ps3

I have an hd dvd player, so i wouldnt mind them winning . This war could be over quickly or we will have two formats for High Def movies. If Warner who is netural right now goes over to Blu Ray, its over and they win. If Warner picks HD DVD, then its a lock we are going to have 2 formats for a long time, if no permantly imo. In the end i could care less, ide jus pickup a dual player if HD DVD dies. Also for quality, its wrong that either format is better. Blu Ray is more difficult to code for , while HD DVD is easier. Blu Ray's edge was the advantage of more space on each disc, that is no more because HD DVD has worked around it. The edge that blu ray had for awhile is, the ps3 came loaded with a blu ray player and they had more studio support. At one point it was 4 exclusive studios for Blu ray and 2 for HD DVD. Paramount/Dreamworks shifted to HD DVD exclusively removing a big gap. Right now their actually more stand alone HD DVD players in homes compared to Blu Ray. Software though goes to Blu Ray by a 2 : 1 advantage. Its way to early to tell who would win because that 2 : 1 ratio isnt on a big scale since High Def moves are niche thing, DVD clearly is head and shoulder ahead.

Don't buy a dual... wait. It won't be long before one of them caves. It will be impossible for both to succeed. Expect HD-DVD to cave first and sell.

If Warner goes over to HD DVD, its going to be two formats for awhile. They are looking at the 4th Q sales to determine what they are going to do. Either that or which ever sides pays them off the most money to switch over.

This is a very poignant observation. IF warner goes HD DVD two formats will be around for awhile...BUT...

Warner just canned their "TOTAL HD" disc plans (one disc with Blu-Ray on one side and HD-DVD on the other)....sooo...I think it's coming to a head very soon.

The whole PARAMOUNT/Dreamworks to HD-DVD is a bit of a pointless win for HD-DVD as all the major movies and SPIELBERG films will still be put out in BLU-RAY (e.g. ET, Indiana Jones, etc.).

I loved how the public thought that PORN going HD-DVD was the coup...people...it's simple math. OF COURSE Porn would choose HD-DVD, it would mean LESS costs for them to convert their production of discs, since HD-DVD production only requires certain machines to be upgraded and maintain the DVD production equipment (less money to convert). BLU-RAY would require all porn companies to find a BLU-RAY house or BLU-RAY facilities, which would cost them a lot of money, hence...no brainer- HD DVD.

Porn means nothing in this format war. It comes down to the consumer. So far, BEST BUY has given MORE space to BLU-RAY as of late (beginning last week). So...the "War" seems to be coming to a head soon. I'd say after this Holiday season (by January 2008) it will be clear which way the format will go.

Blu-Ray has an obvious large advantage due to much larger disc sizes, (more bonus content on each disc) Otherwise the formats produce about the same quality.

I just hate the name though, Blu-ray...huh? HD-DVD is basic and spells out exactly what it is.

If there is one thing I DO NOT want to see in high definition it is porn.

All my masturbatory fantasies would be ruined if I saw what I wasn't meant to see.

I wouldn't get any of them. I don't want a beta max and we still don't know which one will be the beta max. When there is one on the market ill consider it.

Well, I learned that Beta was the better format, but VHS was easier to produce. Maybe history repeating itself?

I own a PS3 and an HD-DVD player for my 360. So far... they look the same IMHO.

Blu-Ray is supposedly better since it has a larger capacity to hold more stuff in.

I think Blockbuster removed HD DVD from their stores right?

So far, sales of HD vs Blu-Ray in 2007? 2-1 in favor of Blu-Ray.

Same here, not going to get stuck with a pricey player and a bunch of pricey discs.

Should have been a 'Neither' choice in the poll.

My vote is for neither. I'd like one format please.

However, who wins is anyone's guess. One thing no one has mentioned about HD-DVD is that you can buy some player models for under $200 and Wal-Mart, as we speak, is selling one for under $100. Going into the holiday season, if Blu-ray can't compete with a price point like that, HD-DVD could make some headway.

i'll let them duke it out and i'll go with the winner when they drastically lower the prices of a player and the dvds themselves.

Beta didn't have a huge catalog and studio support as Blu-Ray.

well, I have over 1000 dvds so I am screwed either way

I've got the ps3, and Blu Ray looks amazing. Haven't bought the hd-dvd player (hogh I may switch to xbox 360, so who knows.) In either case, I am watching on a 123 inch diagonal projection screen, so I'm happy!

Lakers in HD, more than 10 feet across is insane. Highly recommended.

Will regular DVDs not play in either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray devices? Cause if not, and we are forced to eventually replace our entire DVD libraries, I am going to become quite irate as are other people, I am sure.

To be honest, I am waiting for Apple to start selling HD movie/tv show downloads. Once that happens, I will buy an AppleTV box and just download everything to that.

I've never seen a model of either type that didn't play regular DVDs.
