Okay, since weve all been talking about the marriage thread and poll lets talk about impressing the women in our lives. Here in socal, where can I take my wifey to impress her? Ideas for affordable and then the occasional splurge date are all acceptable. I live in the san diego area so I would love some local suggestions but any are appreciated! Thanks in advance guys |

Dude,
Cheap but fun and low-key dates would include:
The Griffith Observatory - Make sure you book in advance. And go in the evenings on a clear summer night. The view is breathtaking. Like a sea of gold.
Venice/Santa Monica Pier/3rd St. Promenade - These three are all within walking distance of each other. A lot of people. Always lively, especially on weekends. 3-4 hours in the afternoon and finishing off with a nice dinner on the promenade. May cost you a little bit, but not outrageous.
The LA Zoo - Again, cheap, if you don't buy food there. A burger and coke will cost you like $11-$12 bucks. Avoid that. Plus their main restaurant is right by the monkey community and the giraffes. You eat your food right in front of giraffes taking big sh (bleep). Still a relaxing place though.
The Getty Museum - One of my favorite places to go. CHEAP. Educational, and full of pretentiously-sophisticated chicks walking around. If your chick is out and about checking out galleries, you can easily pick up a number or two from other girls. I've done it. One time I impressed a chick with my Edgar Degas knowledge. Ended up messin' with her for a while. Mind you, I know pretty much nothing about art history, but I did do a term paper on Edgar Degas once in college. That sh (bleep) was gold.
Beach - any beach in the afternoon. Get a bike rack and take your bikes there. Or you can just rent there but it'll cost you like $25.00 bucks for the whole day.
I usually AVOID any malls, shopping centers, outlets, etc. And if I do end up going there with her, I make sure I leave my debit/credit cards at home and take like $20.00 bucks on me. You'd be amazed at how satisfying it is to see your chick paying for $60.00 dollar jeans with her OWN money lol _________________ =======================

A Lakers game with good seats
The Grove in LA - and more specifically, the farmer's market. Higher end retail with a high end ambiance (fountain + trolley + music) and a high end crowd. If she's the type who's into celeb stuff, you can regularly spot them here. The Farmer's Market has plenty of unique (some Zagat rated) food choices
Laguna Beach -(Crescent Bay) - One of my favorite places Sand is clean, water is clean, people are clean. Minimal "ghetto" element and you're not picking sticks, straws, and seaweed out from between your toes after you leave. Minimal fatties and no surfers. Beautiful tidepools are a scenic rock-climb away.
To get there from the 405 north, exit 133 south to Laguna Beach. Keep on the 133--don't make any turns--take it straight to PCH, and look to turn right when 133 becomes Broadway where the main beach is.
Turn right and go about 3/4 a mile up the road. Look for the shell station & the stop & go mart. Park on the street. Walk down to the beach.
The Getty Museum
The Arclight Theater in Hollywood (Cineramadome) - Preferred seating, and extremely movie-conscious crowd who won't talk or crinkle plastic or do any other of that cardinal-sin-annoying (bleep). Beautiful lobby and top notch screen rooms.
Dunno much about SD. La Jolla is gorgeous, Carlsbad isn't bad. TJ is an exciting place to go for 4 or 5 hours. Bring your passports or birth certificate. _________________ http://chickhearn.ytmnd.com/

Aren't there a number of cool hotels that has roof top bars, in San Diego. Get you some baseball tickets. Go to the rooftop bar at the Marriot next to the Stadium. Have a drink, and then head over to a baseball game. |

Cozy little joint. Great atmosphere. All the waiters are in their 50's (and they all have their own specials, and will work "off menu" as well), great service, and food to die for. It's pretty pricey, but well worth it. I take my best clients there at our convention, and they all rave about it. _________________ “We must always take sides. Trust me, neither of you will be disappointed, provided you're ready to shell out $200 plus (depending upon wine selection) _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” ― Elie Wiesel |

The Edison in LA on a Thursday night. They have a cool retro band....I think you can reserve a seat in the back room too or something.

Its a bar, but is really upscale and the ambiance is fantastic. Good drink selection to boot.
And Manhattan Beach is the best beach city in SoCal. Very laid back...just awesome. Stay at the Shade Hotel. _________________ Got money? And you know it! Take it out your pocket and show it then throw it!!!! |

I'm up in Santa Cruz for the week, and the place we went to last night definitely fit the bill.
Shadowbrook
The restaurant has its own cable car to take you from street level down to the restaurant. The restaurant itself goes down the hill on several levels, toward the river below. All redwood and antiques. Our table was in an atrium on the lowest level, overlooking the river. Nice wine list (ordered Silver Oak, but they were out, so "settled" on Stag's Leap Artemis). Great smoked salmon appetizer. Absolutely killer artichoke soup. I had a filet on bernaise sauce; wife had duck breast. Both were perfectly done. Didn't have time to stay for dessert, because of limited child care time. Very nice service, well presented -- and very impressive. |
