I read the other day there is a NBA Rule against trading away 2 consecutive 1st picks of the draft.

It said it was due to some Cavs GM of the 80s that tanked his team doing that.

Is this true?

from wikipedia

Quote:
1980-1983: The Stepien Years

In 1980, after just a few months, Zingale sold the team to Nationwide Advertising magnate Ted Stepien. The new owner oversaw the hiring and firing of a succession of coaches and was involved in making a number of poor trade and free agent signing decisions. The result of Stepien's questionable trading acumen was the loss of several of the team's first round draft picks, and led to a rule change in the NBA prohibiting teams from trading away first round draft picks in consecutive years. This rule is known as the "Ted Stepien Rule.

Don't he Bulls have the Knicks 1st rounder in the 2006 draft and the 2007 draft from the Curry deal?

The rule isn't specifically that you can't trade away 2 consecutive 1st round picks. It's that you can't trade them away if they are your only first rounders.

The Knicks deal is complicated, but they are within the rules because the 2007 pick is actually swapped with Chicago, not given to them.

It also simplifies protected picks. If you trade consecutive picks (protected) and then hit high in the lottery, who gets the pick the following year?
