There's just no way a thread about gary Payton at an OC mall deserves to be higher on the board than PDTP.

Situation rectified.

I still say someone should have thrown an Orange Julius at him...

I had something for Freestyle Friday that I thought of on my way to work, but I totally forgot. Stupid donuts got my mind sidetracked.

This may or may not be the thought I had on the way to work this morning.

Does anyone know what's happened to Aaron McGruder? Did he fall off the planet? Did he follow Dave Chappelle to Africa? His comic strip had been in "re-runs" for a long while, then it seemed to be new for a week or two, then it went back into re-runs and has been there ever since. His cartoon did well enough that Cartoon Network ordered a second season (back in January 06) but I've heard nothing about since then. Anyone have any ideas?

I read something a while back where he was taking an undetermined amount of time off from writing new strips. Being an old cartoon junkie I always admired his work especially

Quote:
Several of his strips have been briefly pulled from prominent publications. His "Condi Needs a Man" strip, in which Huey and his friend Caesar create a personal ad for U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, portraying her as a "female Darth Vader type", resulted in The Washington Post withholding a week's worth of strips, the longest such suspension ever by the paper — whose ombudsman, Michael Getler, later sided with McGruder. [1] [2] The Post also declined to run "Can a (bleep) Get a Job?", which had black contestants compete on a reality TV show to work for Russell Simmons, only to find that all the contestants were rude and lazy. This unflattering portrayal drew the ire of many in the African-American community

The last I heard, he was getting heat from Al Sharpton for the usage of a certain word in one of his shows. I know nothing of what became of that, or what he's been up to lately.

mid day and PDTP still beng pushed down by the likes of Gary Patyon at the mall and nicknames for Coby Karl. Even worse, there's pipe out there bashing the GM for not going after James Singleton.

What's that Lassie? LG has fallen down a well? What are we waiting for?

Apparently he has given up the comic strip. Here is an article from Sept. 26, of last year...
Quote:
It's over for "The Boondocks" comic strip, at least for now. After six years -- a remarkably short run for a strip that found its way into 300-plus newspapers, including The Washington Post -- Universal Press Syndicate told subscribers yesterday they should start looking for someone to replace political/social satirist Aaron McGruder.

McGruder, a Columbia native who in his twenties became the Garry Trudeau of the hip-hop generation, took a sabbatical six months ago to recharge. The syndicate kept checking with him, reminding him that its newspaper clients needed several weeks in order to prepare for his return or his departure.

Apparently, the mind behind young black radicals Huey and Riley Freeman has gone Hollywood, or at least has further hopes of doing so, and has decided he can't devote himself to the grind of a daily strip. His late-night animated show, "The Boondocks," on the Cartoon Network was recently renewed for another season, the first-season DVD is out, and a film is reportedly in the works.
Quote:
The heavies at Universal are clearly not happy with the way McGruder handled the situation, although they worded their news release carefully.

"Although Aaron McGruder has made no statement about retiring or resuming The Boondocks for print newspapers . . . newspapers should not count on it coming back in the foreseeable future," Universal's president, Lee Salem, said in the release. "Numerous attempts . . . to pin McGruder down on a date that the strip would be coming back were unsuccessful."

According to industry sources, McGruder's editor at Universal, Greg Melvin, flew to Los Angeles recently and spent a couple of days trying to get the cartoonist to abide by the terms of his agreement to return in six months.

"We were getting dozens of phone calls every day from newspapers asking when he was coming back," Salem said in a telephone interview. "It seemed unfair to keep them dangling." He added that if McGruder decides to return, Universal would welcome him back.

Oh, and here is his MySpace page... Where he writes...
Quote:
Mostly working, which involves mostly writing. I still draw occasionally, but for the most part I leave it to the pros who work on the show. I'm trying to get some time off to develop some hobbies or something 'cause lord knows I need a few.

About me:
MySpace Layouts
About 12 years ago I created "The Boondocks" comic strip which has since turned into an animted series on Adult Swim (Sunday nights, 11pm). This page has become my primary place to interact with fans, but everyone should know that I', getting way more messages then I can read in a day let alone respond to...so if you don't get a response please don't be upset. So far I've been overwhelmed by the love and support from you guys and I deeply appreciate, and I check this space regularly, so keep hitting me up. I'd like to answer to very questions everyone's been asking. 1) Yes, the show is coming back next year. We do not have an airdate yet. So far I think the second season is much funnier than season 1 but then again who am I to judge? 2) The strip will no longer be running in newspapers but it is by no means over. There will more announcements about this soon.
What is "Adult Swim?

wow, that was impressive.

I'm all Haikued-out.

I have nothing creative stirring inside me that could manifest itself into a happy haiku.

Thanks for posting that.
Adult Swim is a a chunk of time that they set aside on the Cartoon Network to air cartoons that aren't for children. Initially it started off as a spin-off of Cartoon Network, but now it's technically it's own network. It starts at 10 or 11pm.

I think you might need to look closer:

I'm all Haikued-out
Nothing stirring inside me
No happy haiku

Speaking of poems, I've been writing a lot of what I call "quads". The only stipulation is that they be four lines, no more, no less. You can rhyme: alternating lines, first two and last two, first and last and middle two, all, none, or any variation you like. It's fun to limit things to four lines, as it creates more of a snapshot view, and forces you to allude to unsaid thoughts.

Here's a few:

Insomnia

Time is still as a river deep
As if the clock must also sleep
But I am here awake it seems
To envy clocks their timeless dreams

Unique

What good is being special
If everyone is so?
Each precious little snowflake
Is in the end just snow

Reach

Open arms and awestruck eyes
Sifting truths from pretty lies
Embracing all the hopes that might
Draw the world within my sight
