just looked at the plans at&t is gonna have and i'm pretty much turned off to it. i'd have to pay $90/month to have similar but slightly worse service than i currently have. i currently pay $30/month and get 500 minutes, unlimited nights and weekends, unlimited text messaging, unlimited data, night and weekends start at 7pm, and first incoming minute free. it's not worth it to me to pay $200-$300 upfront and $1440 more over the next two years for a pretty user interface.

And what carrier do you have?

sprint. great service all throughout la and surrounding areas. also forgot to mention that i have free roaming, which allows me to hop onto verizon's network if i want to. so far i've never had to though other than when i just wanted to test and see if i could.

^ I just bought a blackberry a month ago, then find out that they have that new phone out called instinct. Wish I knew about it before, I would've bought that instead.

if it's any consolation, the only plan you can get with an instinct is the unlimited $99.99 one.

v3n, I'm having a hard time digging through the site to find any real pricing. Can you provide a link or break it down for me?

But yeah, I'd want to go the iPhone route, but if we're talking about $90/month, I'd have to re-consider. I'm with ATT/Cingular right now and pay under $40/month for more voice minutes than I can use and unlimited data to my 8125 that does close to everything an iPhone does except it's a clunkier form factor and of course not nearly as nice a browser. That's something like an extra $1200 over 2 years...

The iPhone is definitely sexier and an upgrade on my current device, but is it $1200 sexier? Of course, that's only about an additional $1.66 per day over two years. Damn you AT&T and Apple for making me choose!

I think the key thing to remember is the App store and that it is a great video iPod as well. Those are two major selling points.

^^^ I hear ya, but frankly I don't find a lot of value in those things for my personal situation. I can get tons of apps through lots of different stores on my current device today. In fact, I'd have to buy new apps to replace the ones I have already purchased for my existing phone.

Already have a video iPod and would really rather keep music/video separate from my phone.

Just found this:

http://www.macworld.com/article/134237/2008/07/att_rateplans.html

So the $70/month plan looks like it would work for me as far as minutes, and while it's better than $90/month, it's still almost twice what I'm paying now. Plus this sucks:

Quote:
As rumored, text messages are no longer included in the bundle—boooo—so if you plan to some SMSing, you’ll need to spend a little extra. AT&T offers three plans for individuals: 200 messages for $5/month, 1500 messages for $15/month, and unlimited texting for $20/month. FamilyTalk plans can pay $30/month for unlimited text messages. If you pay per use, it will cost you an astounding $0.20 per text message.

I send maybe 50 text messages a month, so it would make sense to pay the extra $5/month, even though that means I'm paying for about 150 texts/month that I'll never send.

And yet, I'm still considering it. The iPhone is Angelina Jolie in Beowolf right now. I know that chick is evil, but man is she hot!

Hmmm... Well you might be one of those people just doesn't need one right now. Like myself.

I have the iPhone and it will be fine for me for the next year or so. I just can't justify it to myself into paying more for 3G and GPS. I'll have the software upgrade for free, and that is what I'm really looking forward to.

Wow. I thought people would have learned from the last iPhone release. You don't need to wait in long lines to get one. But people are, 6 days ahead of the release.

FYI

From an ATT rep, for those interested in pricing compared to other smart phones on ATT.

Q: How does the iPhone 3G plan pricing compare with, say, the Treo or BlackBerry plans?

A: Exactly the same as on our other PDA’s and smartphones.

Of course, pricing is different on Sprint, TMo etc.
