Even Laker games, surely you would know KCAL9 people who always say, "After the game, blah blah blah"
Add along the fact that during free throws, the station cuts for 10 seconds for station identification, which is the news.

Why don't the newscasters cry when they read about people who die

Don't watch local news - there's no point. It is vapid sensationalism mixed in with a couple of stories about local incidents - which people can find out about much better online through papers without having to watch some annoying talking head selected purely for looks and demographics.
The local news stations are a horrible source for anything that is actual news. Even when they are covering news - like a local fire or something - the coverage is more about wild speculation and mindless discussion than it is about news.
