I didn't see this one coming.

The Big Ten is seeking feedback from its members about the possibility of making freshmen athletes ineligible for competition as they adjust to college life.

In a statement to ESPN.com, the league says it is gauging interest from its members about a "national discussion regarding a year of readiness for student-athletes."

On the one hand, I would be impressed if colleges actually did this, because it would restore some legitimacy to the concept of "student-athletes." In non-revenue sports, and even in football, it would make some sense. Heck, football programs already redshirt a high percentage of freshmen.

But how in the world would this work in basketball? While it is true that one-and-dones are a small percentage of college players, this would lead to an immediate fight between the NBA and the NBPA over forcing kids to spend two years in college. If the NBPA refused -- which it almost certainly would -- what are the guys like Andrew Wiggins going to do? They can't play in college, and they can't be drafted. Do they try to get a college scholarship so that they can sit on their hands for a year in college, even though the college knows that they probably won't ever play there? Do they go overseas? Do they go straight to the D League? What a mess.

I think this only hurts that conference, in terms of attracting elite athletes.

The elite talent will go elsewhere.

They aren't talking about doing it alone. This is what the reference to a "national discussion" means.

It's an absolutely stupid move and will never happen. They want to do it for football and men's basketball which means it will get through the courts of challenged.

It would be a dream come true though for the NBA. Having guys like Andrew Wiggins and Anthony Davis go through the DLeague would bring a lot of cash and exposure to the DLeague. Eventually it would become actually relevant and useful for teams and money would finally be there to decently pay players.
