Does anyone remember this game?
I just watched it again and boy did it bring back memories.
One thing I noticed that I didn't at the time was how done Dennis Rodman was.
When they got rid of him mid-season I was kind of disappointed at the time but from how he looked in this game, I can see why- he simply didn't do much good to justify the distraction he brings to the team.
Also, it gave me a chance to re-evaluate the young Kobe, who, even at that age, didn't take it to the basket as often as he probably should have.
But what a great jumper he had in the second half.
My next wish is someone uploading the game he had against Houston where he scored 46 points on 20/26 shooting. |

Kobe brought us back in the 4th. He was clutch, clutch and some more clutch. I think that was the game when Kobe blocked McGrady and he had that shoulder pad... |

Isn't that the game where we were hopelessly behind by like 25 in the 3rd and then Kobe brought down the pain to silence the Orlando crowd?
IIRC, that was one of the first really big Kobe Moments. |

Yeah I remember that game. I still have that on tape. Great game by Kobe and a great come back by the Lakers. LMAO @ Dennis knocking Matt Harpring to the floor when Harpring was going up for the rebound. |

I could make this thread for about 30 games...each year the lakers add 2-3 new memorable games...this year we had kobes 81, kobes 62, and the comeback against the clippers where kobe and cook went off...and game 4 of playoffs _________________ Lakers in '08.

He's not Wade, he actually has and had more tools than driving. That's the main reason idiots like Wade take it to the hole so much-They can't shoot. I still find it ridiculous that some think Wade is on Kobe's level. Wade isn't even as good as a younger Kobe, yet somehow people think they're on the same level. _________________ "In essence, the trade was: Shaq, Rick Fox and Gary Payton for Odom, Kwame, Mihm, Profit, 2nd round picks, a 1st round pick and 30 million in luxury tax saviings." - LakerJam

You have to give it to Wade for perfecting the Vlade flop on offense. I never thought that could be done. |

Rodman and Harping was classic indeed.
For anyone who doesn't remember, you're certainly not suffering from Alzheimer since it's from 7 years ago.
This was a Shaq vs. Penny game on national TV.
Shaq was dominant in first half, scoring something like 16, but also letting a rookie Michael Doleac score almost as many against him.
Lakers were playing absolutely horrid defense overall, as a team, too, and Kobe had only scored 5 points in the first half going 2/8 from the field.
Darrell Armstrong, like most PGs playing against Lakers since Magic was here, abused the Lakers point guards, and the Magic was +25 with him in the game.
The Magic lead by 63 to 43 by the half time.
In third quarter, Kobe comes out firing, makes 7 !!! straight shots on mostly jumpers and Derek Harper makes 3 threes in a row.
Lakers outscore the Magic 31 to 15 in the third and shoot a blistering 86%.
But the Magic go on a 6-0 run, scoring the last 2 on a Penny last second fadeaway against Kobe and still lead by 10 by the end of the third quarter.
Kobe has 20 by third.
In the fourth quarter, Dennis Rodman gets a technical.
Doleac, Derek Strong and Isaac Austin look like David Robinson, Tim Duncan and Hakeem Olajuwon and keep abusing Shaq from the perimeter (what a fat lazy (bleep))
Dennis Rodman gives a push from the back to Harping while he's in the air, making Harpring to fall HARD on the floor... didn't get caught either.
CLASSIC!
Kobe pull-up 3 in lead down to 4 and Kobe has 23...
Kobe alley-oop on next possession and Kobe has 25.
But he's just getting started.
(Kobe does show weakness on defense as Penny either scores easily on him or commands double in the post)
Kobe makes fadeaway over a bigger man.
Kobe makes pull-up 2 over Penny the next possession, ties the game.
He now has 24 in the 2nd half, shooting 11/12.
Inside 6 minutes... Kobe iso in the pinch post against Harpring, pulls up for a fadeaway, fouled and makes it! He then blows his fingers a la playoff against Sacramento in 01.
He is now 12/13 in the second half.
Kobe lets Penny score easily and finally misses a shot.
But now everything working for the Lakers, as everyone is relaxed and they're up with little time left.
Rice for 3, 104 to 99.
Kobe for an easy layup around everyone- 13/15 in the second half.
Misses a jumper, 13/16 but at this point, they're up by 6 with only a minute to go.
Hack-a-shaq begins.
Bob Costas makes a comment that Lakers have shot the highest percentage of any game in the NBA that season at higher than a 60% clip.
Kobe scores 2 from the free throw line, now has 36 and he scores again on a steal breakaway.
33 in the second half.
18 in the fourth.
14/17 from the field in the second half.
Career high in points.
Shaq had 32 and 13 and yet didn't seem to have much of an impact.
And in the post-game interview, Shaq does not say ONE WORD about Kobe's performance and instead talks about his father telling him something dumb and talks about how HIS team can never lose as long as HE IS playing.
WHAT???
You let the trio of Michael Doleac, Derek Strong and Isaac Austin look like the triumvirate of Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great and Marcus Licinius Crassus to combine for 46!
Just a great game though.
Before this game, I thought Kobe was an electrifying player who's got great moves and a great future in the league.
This game, however, marked the beginning point of my becoming a hardcore fan of Kobe's and also a big believer that he is the one, the next in line of all the great ones in the NBA, and eventually the best in the NBA. |

Just watched it after downloading it. Sick Kobe with 33 in the second half. Watched a couple of games of that era. Downloaded that one game Lakers @ Warriors Lakers were down 20 at the end of the third and Shaq was ejected in the 2nd with that Kobe missed ft tip in at the buzzer to force OT. |
