I can see Luke using him as a center. His ability to defend the PnR and stretch the floor as at center will be huge. Luckily, he will be next to Randle and nance who are pretty good defensive rebounders. Hopefully they improve their help defense. I think having a smaller roll in the NBA will help highlight some of his strengths and hide some of his weaknesses. He won't be the focal point of the offense so he can look for good shots, no ball hogging, playing against backup bigs dhould help as well.
Thanks for making breakfast. _________________ “Christ did not die to forgive sinners who go on treasuring anything above seeing and savoring God. And people who would be happy in heaven if Christ were not there, will not be there."

Nice vid. Looking forward to his pick and roll defense. Only thing is that there's one play that's supposed to be a hedge on Kyrie but it's actually not him, he's in the corner guarding Melo and ends up fouling him on that play. Still good work and very informative. _________________ It was reminiscent of one of those Most Interesting Man in the World advertisements: "I don't always shoot 6-for-28 from the field, but when I do, I become the youngest player in league history to score 28,000 career points."
I didnt know anything about the guy,but he looks extremely limited.
Zubac looks more promising for a rookie kid at this stage
That's the thing - Yi isn't guaranteed rotation time. As of right now, the money he is guaranteed (250k) is a tier above what the typical training camp invite receives (50-100k). His contract is incentivized and structured in such a way that he will have to demonstrate his utility on the court. The better of a showing he has, the more he will make throughout the course of the season. If he sees playing time, it will be because he's beat out the other bigs for it. This is why training camp and preseason will determine whether they waive him in the coming months or not. I'm rooting for him to succeed obviously. As a stretch five, he brings a fairly unique skillset and will make defenses shift more.
I have a hard time seeing Yi walk away from CBA MVP and CBA $ for a glorified training camp invite.
I do think he will see some playing time as none of our centers can play stretch positions (Moz, Zub, Black) and Nance/Randle are both 6'8/6'9 at best. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

Well, he wouldn't have signed if some of the money wasn't guaranteed. Yi still walks away with 250k if they aren't happy with his showing in training camp. He'd be able to find another lucrative contract overseas.
He’ll earn somewhere between $250,000 and $8 million next season, $1,139,123 just for remaining on the roster through Jan. 10.
Yi can trigger $2,286,959 bonuses for hitting three benchmarks based on games played, according to Basketball Insiders. Here’s the running total for those incentives:
20-39 games played: $2,286,959
40-58 games played: $4,573,918
59+ games played:$6,860,877
From my understanding, he could end up making more than he would have in China if he demonstrates exceptional utility on the court. That's a very big if however.

Yi is over 30 so in terms of "future" it's obvious.
As for next season only, don't think there's a single area zubac is better at right now.
but let's all temper this a bit. If zubac and Yi beat each other up in practice enough for zubac to develop and gain some agility/speed then it's worth it. If either of them get on the court and hit shots in their limited game time - they'll be more popular than sacre who only really had cheerleading highlights. lol. _________________ KOBE!!!
Yi is a perfect 1 year cap holder. Keeps the Chinese fan base involved with the Lakers and he offers a stretch center role for the team. I don't see why he wouldn't stick on the team. It's a low risk, moderate reward move for the Lakers. _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals
It seems like he's going to have a very defined role if he does make the team. I don't expect he'll get a lot of playing time, IMO.
pick and pop but I'm not sure if he is fast enough to cover small ball big
He's very mobile, I'm not concerned about that. I'm concerned about his ability to rebound and protect the rim. He's an okay shooter and does well on both ends in the pick & roll, but I don't think he's good enough at any of them to offset that.
I can't think of much of a reason to play him at the 5 instead of Nance.

back up 4, Mozgov-Yi? Black-Yi? Randle at 5 with Yi? who would you pair him up with?

Yeah, the groupings I see at the center spot:
Moz/Zub (bit slower, PnR liabilities)
Black (mobile, but no post up game, a bit undersized)
Yi/Nance (stretch bigs with Yi having size over Nance). _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals

The pairing I think could be the most likely and productive is one you didn't list.
